This supermarket has a self-checkout system in its stores. The problem I often encounter is that the store staff in Utrecht often check my purchases, sometimes even rudely. It's really annoying. g.h

Fraudulent Behavior & Worst Customer Service at Albert Heijn Eindhoven (5612CP)

Fraud & Terrible Service at Albert Heijn Eindhoven – Do NOT Trust Them!

I want to warn others about the fraudulent and unacceptable behavior I experienced at Albert Heijn, Tongelresestraat, Eindhoven (5612CP).

On February 19, 2025, my wife and I bought four Apple Gift Cards (€150 each) at this store.

Later that night, we discovered that one gift card was never activated. Apple Support confirmed this clearly. We immediately returned to the store and explained everything. Shockingly, staff refused responsibility. After a long argument, they admitted their colleague gave us an inactive card and kept the activated one with herself but they still refused to refund us. Instead, they took both the inactive card and the activated one, leaving us with nothing. I even recorded a video of the store manager, Mr. Giem van der Velden, taking both cards as proof.

I showed them the purchase receipt, Apple’s confirmation emails, and explained the mistake was clearly theirs. Still, they refused to cooperate.

When I called Albert Heijn’s customer service in front of the manager, they confirmed on the phone that I was entitled to a refund. But the manager refused to accept this, claiming he only trusted calls from the store’s phone, which he made privately and continued to deny us the refund.

I contacted Albert Heijn customer service over 10 times, explaining everything and providing full proof:

Receipt of purchase

Emails from Apple confirming the inactive card

Video evidence showing the manager taking both cards

Despite this, Earta, Senior Medewerker Klantenservice emailed me falsely blaming me and backing up the store’s unethical behavior. This is nothing short of protecting fraudulent actions by their staff.

Summary:

Store: Albert Heijn, Tongelresestraat, 5612CP Eindhoven

Manager: Mr. Giem van der Velden

Customer Service Contact: Earta, Senior Medewerker Klantenservice

Issue: Paid €150 for an inactive Apple Gift Card, store took activated card, refused refund, and customer service ignored clear proof.

Conclusion:

Albert Heijn charged us for a product we never received, withheld the correct card, refused a refund, and their customer service actively covered up the issue despite clear evidence. Stay away from Albert Heijn, especially when buying gift cards—they cannot be trusted!

Please get the managers out of bed.

I am not sure if anyone is actually managing this store in the last years. Some tips: (a) staff training: the staff need to learn that they are there to serve the customer; they need to be friendly, intelligent and helpful. Teenagers are naturally sullen and miserable, but they have to be trained to at least pretend to be civil. Neurologically-divergent staff should be supervised: I was today abused by a young man on staff who complained that I, the customer, was encroaching on his personal aisle. (b) Safety: at all times all aisles should be accessible, so that in the event of emergency, customers can move through the store without obstruction. (c) Have the store ready for customers before you open the shop: there used to be an excellent, happy, efficient Polish crew who did the shelf-filling in the early morning hours, so that the store was customer-ready at opening time. Stop being lazy: and that especially applies to AH management who clearly don't give a flying fck about the customers.

sShixxy attitude of staff checking my items at self pay. They have very few tills left now. So not only do we do the shadow work of scanning our own things but once they have pulled out all items they refuse to put them back. What a totally lazy attitude. I wasn't raised like that. I asked them to simply do their job to which they barked back it’s not my job! Followed by well of course it is from me (sounding no doubt like a spoiled rich kid which I most certainly am not) . Sick of you AH a multi million company. I know I should shut up and shop elsewhere. I shall try. I admit they are probably paid low by this multi-million earning company but still basic customer care helps to keep business.

Checking customers bags in unfriendly manner

The really disappointing thing is the security staff or system with ai in general is doing their work / it’s work, but at the same time, bothering its customers in a way which is not professionally. Why sending some teen / adult workers (sorry for this term) to someone for checking his/her bag more than x times? Did they not realize that they loose their returning visitors? Perhaps, they stay away for good and never coming back to this specific location at Paul Kruger***** in the Haq** (Netherlands). Why doing this behavior? Discrimination? I understand the security / safety system, but this helps nothing but angry customers in return. My advice is … first, to put your belongings near the entrance, second … incl. any bags you are carry with you. Unnecessary…

Today as I was getting ready to pay for my groceries at the terminal, an employee approached me, told me he was going to check. Told.. didn’t politely ask. I told him that I trust AH and why does AH distrust me? I told him that if after scanning all was ok, that I would leave it all behind. So he with asked me to leave. I left all the groceries behind. Fresh produce, meats, detergents. Keep it all AH. So I drove to Plus supermarket and enjoyed shopping there as a better alternative.

Yesterday

Yesterday, I went to AH, and bought for 15.01 euros. I expected to get a scratcher per the promotion. Unfortunately, because one of the product had 0.25 deposit, and it didn't show in any place that this is not included, I did not receive a scratcher.
I tried to contact AH, explaining the situation, but after multiple times trying to ask them just to make a small exception (because of 24 cents -_-) all the customer service said was those are the roles and we can go and they done care.
It's sad because now we will have this bad experience from this, and it's not like we didn't bought previously for more. It was just this specific shopping which was 15.01 euros.

It's a shame that the reply was so negative, demotivating and to be honest, made me very negatively look at this shop which made millions on a weekly basis.

Technology good for AH terrible for the Customer

I have not been in AH since I lived in the Netherlands some 20 years ago when you could not buy items without a debit card.
I hated the experience this time.
I hate automated check outs - in the Uk in most supermarkets you get a choice. At AH you don’t. It’s all automated. I bought approximately 16 euros of items. I was subject to a random check - which luckily turned out to be ok. The worse thing was that although my hands were full I had to put my shopping down again to scan my receipt to get out.So much for going paperless.
This is a classic example of technology making the shopping expertise worse. This will be the last time I go to AH.
Terrible experience. No choice your made to feel like a criminal , locked in and it is far from paperless.

Expensive, out of stock, bad service

I don't know if the people that work at AH are just robots, or some AI that is aimed at brain messing with you.

First off, you are always out of stock. It is either sodas, or cooking needs such as cream, or creme freche, or bread, etc. Not to mention your lack of variety particularly in fish.

Then you have the nasty people that are re-stocking things like bread... the woman was putting bread in the display and I ask "could you give me one of those?" to what she replied "jij mag je zelf pakke oor" or, you can take it your self. And that makes me wonder, what kind of crappy salary do you pay your workers to be that angry and nasty?

Then you have the prices... I mean, that a lemon costs 70 cents per piece is plain robbery. Not to mention onions, peppers, etc.

Then you have the plastic and the plastic bags. So much for the environment when even a cucumber is packed in plastic, apples packed in plastic, onions packed in plastic bags, etc etc etc.

And then you have the unreasonable robotic people working there. Today my wife forgot to buy a bag of chippies so we could make nachos, and I realized the time and called the AH at 22.00 o'clock asking them to please bring a bag to the front desk so I could drop by to buy it (it takes me 2 minutes to get there) so we could have dinner. Their answer? sorry, it is after 10PM, we're closed.

Your meat quality is some of the worst i have tasted, your vegetables quality is some of the worst i have tasted, you are always out of stock and overpriced, and your staff just does not give a rats ass in an "emergency" situation. Why on earth would anyone would want to buy here???

I will most definitely do my best to NEVER, EVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE, SHOP AT AH.

I wish we could get a Little at walking distance instead. Way better quality and much cheaper.

TBH, I hope you go bankrupt.

Rude & shouting caucasian lady at…

Rude & shouting caucasian lady at Nieuwmarkt @ Thurs 20 Feb 20:36 aggressively asked where did I pay for my Mogu drink as I was trying to leave the store. I couldn’t remember as there was like 20+ tills. She made me pay for it twice, and wouldn’t let me leave the store (locking the gates) until I did.

She didn’t even bother to check cctv & was extremely hostile/ aggressive the entire time. I did not once raise my voice to her. I hope she gets dealt with appropriately for her obnoxious behaviour. I could’ve reacted aggressively too, but I did not want to stoop to her level & mess up my day because of a miserable woman like herself. I think she wanted me to look bad, God knows what was up with this crazy hormonal woman.

I have photos/evidence from my bank about this, but there is no option to attach it on here.

If it was possible I'd rank a 0 star

If it was possible to rank a 0 star - I'd do it.

They have a 'servicebalie' for flowers and goods not sold in the supermarket -but no service. When I kindly asked for assistance from a checkout I was sent a person who quite rudely told me I should have just paid there. As I have a dog and it's not allowed in the store I said I had to pay there to which she responded 'that's your problem'.

It's gone from being number one most expensive supermarket, to the most self service supermarket, to the most problematic self service (often waiting 5-10 minutes for a random check or clearance to buy alcohol) to now a SERVICE desk where you cannot get service.

Disgusting. If there was a boycott AH day I'd be happy.
