Best walking shoes and boots I've every had

I bought a pair of boots a year ago, as did my wife - best boots I've ever had (and I've had lots over the 50 plus years I've been hiking). Superbly made, and very comfortable. I love them and so does my wife. Now I've just bought a pair of walking shoes which arrived extremely quickly, again comfortable from the start, and superbly made. I highly recommend this company and their footwear. Well done Altberg and thanks for providing superb products.

Don't do made to measure

Although AltBerg like to sell themsleves as a bespoke service they do not (any longer) do made to measure boots. This means that - like everywhere else - you are going to get whatever boot they already have that fits best (albeit it sometimes with a bit of hacking about with inserts etc). All to do with money I guess - maximise profit for minimum effort.

Fabulous Hiking Boots

The Nordkapp hiking boot in full grain Anfibio Culatte leather. I purchased these online in September 2024 and they arrived at the end of that month. I wear my boots for dog and leisure walking at least 6 days per week and often in mud and through water or wet grass. When in wet conditions I wear RAB Gortex gaiters to prevent ingress over the top of the boot. I applied Leder Gris regularly during the 1st few weeks and keep the boots clean and dry after wearing EVERY TIME. I have paired the boots with the Svartz Absorber footbed and wear them with Darn Tough hiking socks. They are exceptionally comfortable.
These boots did take a lot of wearing in for me compared with my similarly priced Mammut boot I had previously but it has been worth the effort. These boots are THE most water repellent boots I've ever owned and the water literally runs off them even when in sustained wet conditions. The leather is now creasing where my feet flex at the toes as expected but I'm seeing no evidence of the leather allowing any moisture to be absorbed at these locations as yet.
I cannot recommend these highly enough and I know that I will be able to get them resoled when required, unlike my last two pairs of Mammuts, neither of which lasted beyond 3 years, even with my fussy aftercare!!

Tabbing Boots Mk3

I ordered a pair of Altberg Tabbing boots. There was a 3 month lead time, however, it was worth the wait. I fitted in insoles and the boots fit like a glove. I have yomped with them and the boots are remarkable, worth every penny

Worth the price

Bought some Altberg boots around 6 months ago now and pleased to say they are going strong! If you look after the boots, they look after you!

I don’t think I’ll be going elsewhere for work boots going forward. Great to know purchasing from them is supporting a British born business

Brilliant product and great service!

Brilliant product! Just received my Jorvik shoes, got them in medium width. Already have Fremington boots (which Altberg also re-soled for me..as I’ve worn them on our fabulous Scottish hills), which I love. Looking forward to getting out in my Jorviks, lighter, compact but very supportive and robust shoes! Thank you!!

Greeat product with Poor customer service.

This was my first experience of Altberg, who I wanted to try as I have wide feet/high arches. I also wanted to support a UK company. I visited the factory store and their service and boot fitting where great and I found out allot about my feet that I did not know. It was so positive that I left a great review. My boots were ordered and the expected week ending 27/9/24. This date came and went so I emailed asking for an update, as I wanted these boots for an upcoming trip. I received a very quick reply stating they were expected sometime in the coming week, great, not an issue so far. As the end of that week approached I gave them a call to find out if they had arrived, as I needed to arrange a collection date, to be told that they are now expected in November!. No reason, no apology for the delay, and what was really disappointing was the fact that I had to email and call to discover this significant change in delivery date. Your order boots because you need them. I unfortunately had to purchase boots from elsewhere, for my holiday, and cancel my Altberg order stating a disappointing customer service experience, as the reason. Again, I received a very quick email response confirming my cancellation and apologising for the delayed delivery... no recognition or mention of the poor customer service experience, or the fact that I had to find out about the delays for myself. This maybe a small issue for some, but the £245 I was going to spend on these boots is a big investment for me and, due to the poor communication from Altberg, I feel that I was having to work hard to give them my money. That is not a good customer service experience. As a side note, I work in retail and I am aware that deliveries can change, no issue with that. Keeping your customers updated though, is important and acknowledging them when they feel like they have received a poor customer experience, not just ignoring that part of the email, often resolves any issues. For me, I would not take the chance of ordering from the company again, which is disappointing as I strongly believe in buying UK/local whenever I can. I have heard nothing but great product review for there products, it is a shame that the ordering/customer service experience does not support this.

I'm on my 3rd or 4th pair of Altbergs…

I'm on my 3rd or 4th pair of Altberg Defender boots now and I also own a pair of their motorcycle boots (20 years old and still going strong). Without exception, I've found them to be made of the best materials and constructed to the very highest quality standards. Fit is also spot on with comfort there straight OOTB

With the Defenders, I find after a couple of years hard work the heels wear down and the boots need re-soling as the uppers are still absolutely fine. The factory have just returned my latest pair after re-soling and I have to say they're like new!

Nice to find a UK-based company that offer such excellent craftsmanship.

Ordered some motorbike boots on the…

Ordered some motorbike boots on the 19th December, given a delivery date of 30th March 2024, seemed a long time but I was ok with it. March came and went and I heard nothing so I sent them an email, they replied that there had been a delay with zips but that they had arrived now and my boots would be delivered 'towards the end of April'. So beginning of May when I had heard nothing and 135 days after ordering I cancelled the order. Their customer service is terrible, they simply don't give a toss.

Appallingly bad customer service

Ordered start of March told delivery by last week of March. Nothing heard so contacted them. Told delay of 2 weeks due to delay on materials. Heard nothing again, so end of April contacted them again and have not even had the courtesy of a reply.

It is no surprise British firms go out of business with such appalling poor customer service.

This firm needs a serious input of professional skills to address their obvious failings.

Ordered motorcycle boots last October…

Ordered motorcycle boots last October 11th 2023 scheduled delivery Feb 17th 2024 still no boots 20th March 2024 emailed and told approximately 3 weeks. 26th April 2025 still no boots, I cancelled order. VERY VERY poor customer service. Don’t waste your time with this extremely unreliable company.

Worth the wait??

Worth the wait??? ABSOLUTELY!
Yes the wait for the Sneeker Microlite was long but for a boot this well made and comfortable it is reminder to be patient in the safe knowledge that the Altberg craftsman or craftswomen are working their magic to deliver the best!

Quite possibly the worst customer…

Quite possibly the worst customer service experience I had ever had, which is such a shame as their boots came highly recommended.

I placed my order on 12th December, by early April no news and when I chased I was told no zips.
End of the month, still no news and when I chased I was told production had halted.

A monster 19 weeks from point of ordering, I eventually gave up and cancelled the order.

I would say if they have stock, buy them.
If not, save yourself a whole lot of grief and go elsewhere.

Best boots - worth every penny.

After decades struggling with many big brand walking boots (I have wide feet) Altbergs were a revelation. Yes - they cost more than most - but they last longer (have just replaced my previous pair bought in 2018) - and fit perfectly. Coast to Coast, Everest Base Camp, Inc Trail - and 112 wainwrights - tackled without any issues. Get them fitted - Whalley Warm and Dry are superb in this regard.

Not set up for online selling

I’d heard great things about their boots and in-shop service. However they are not set up for online selling. Lead times 48-60 days at least. Minimal communication; one liners or no details. Had to drag information out of them over a two day period. It’s ok if things aren’t in stock but they need to work on communication.

Altberg re-sole

I recently sent my Defender boots back to Altberg for a re-sole, and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. The service was excellent, and they did a fantastic job. Now, my boots feel like they're brand new, and the grip in the mud is top-notch once again. Altberg really came through for me, and I'm thoroughly impressed with their workmanship. From the moment I received my boots back, I could feel the quality of their craftsmanship. Overall, Altberg exceeded my expectations, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their services to anyone in need of boot repairs or maintenance.

Bought a pair at Taunton Leisure just…

Bought a pair at Taunton Leisure just over a year ago. They were recommended as I have very wide feet. I had had leather boots in the past but have worn fabric boots now for some years these have usually lasted for about a year of daily use.
So back to leather and very happy with my Altbergs daily use still waterproof still very comfy and still with original laces

I ordered last night

I ordered last night, Size 43 and all ancillaries, which was immediately acknowledged by e mail. This morning I rang after I was e mailed that the dispatch date will be 19 04 24 some seventy days away since they will come in from Italy. I cannot believe that a supposedly British manufacturer of boots does not have possibly the UKs most popular size in stock ready for despatch. The so called customer service guy could not care less and offered no explanation for the delay or even that the date was solid and unlikely to move. It is a ludicruous situation that must now be costing this so called British company many many sales. What on earth has happened to the UK???????? I utterly despair.

Alberg to the rescue, DHL France are blatant scammers

I ordered a resole for two pairs of boots. The work was carried out professionally and communication with the customer, me, was superb.

However, I am based in France and when the boots arrived via DHLFrance, I was informed I had to pay customs and taxes to the tune of 61.80 Euros!

The Altberg UK accounting department were superb as they contacted me to let me know that DHL UK informed them that the package had been refused delivery. In the meantime I paid the DHL France charge.

Altberg UK challenged DHL UK about the customs charge and were informed that in their opinion there should have been no charge as all documentation was correct and provided to DHL UK and DHL France.

I challenged DHL France on this twice, the first story was that Return after Repair had not been clearly marked on the package or documentation, which was provably false. DHL France closed the case and refused further discussion. On the second challenge DHL France stated that they had no proof that the importer had passed the package to them! Again DHL France closed the case and refused further discussion.
Altberg UK accounts on hearing this refunded the customs charge directly to my account within one day as they felt it was unfair I had to pay this obviously erroneous customs charge.

Altberg UK are an excellent company.

DHL France are scammers and I suspect they take every opportunity to scam customers with made up customs and tax charges.
