Boots for life

Proud owner of Altberg Malham boots- happy to report after one year of intensive wear leather is in perfect condition (Im pretty obsessed with polishing footwear - that might have helped). One of the reasons for purchase was that Atberg offers soles replacement service- I grind vibrams pretty fast on the heel- estimate another year till that will be needed. Wish more companies had that in their offer- its so wasteful to bin perfectly good boots with just soles needing exchange. Just ordered Jorvik shoe- extremely happy with 7.5% discount offered :) All in all £££ very well spent- I cant imagine wearing other brands anytime soon

Tethera with Svartz: an excellent boot

Tethera is an excellent boot - after 6 years of regular wear still in perfect condition. 100% waterproof over a week of wet Lake District walking. Already comfortable, but all the more so with new Svartz liners: no problems after five days in the Alps, including last day's 1500m descent.

Always great quality

Always great quality. I have worn Altberg boots daily since 2010 with work. I have just received a new pair of Sneeker Mk2 thought it best to leave a review.

Poor customer service

Brought down kisdon boots they seem good quality, but as others have said customer service is useless, I emailed with a question about there insoles, and the reply I got was completely false. If you really want altberg boots, get them somewhere else.

Great boots

I've worn Altberg Warrior boots for many years for work. I've still got my first pair from nearly ten years ago. The soles had worn away last year so I got them re-soled and had the leather treated and serviced with a fairly quick turn around of a couple of weeks after initially being told it could be six weeks. I bought a second pair of Altbergs but in the Peacekeeper model. Just as comfortable. I'm now going to purchase the Ops model to use for hiking.

Going for a "Fitting?" Prepare for a shock!

Drove many hours in expectation of an excellent service but was very disappointed. Got there on time but made to wait then served by hurried/brusque? gentleman who made me stand on some electrical foot-measuring gimmick which had absolutely no bearing on what came next - as-in none whatsoever! I tried three pairs on, none of which were comfortable as I have narrow feet but the "Five Width Fittings" I was promised on line were "Unavailable." In short, "Fitting" was no different to any high street shoe shop except I was told to expect a five month delay if successful finding a boot that fit. I didn't find one. I was ready to switch allegiance from a German competitor but that will never happen as a direct result of this visit.

A long trip to Altbergs

I have just driven 4 hours to get to Altbergs.

This is a review on my experience of the shop & the customer service I received. (Boots have been ordered but don’t have them so can’t review the boots)

I was warmly received despite them being busy they took my details & said they would be with me soon. I got measured & it showed my feet are different lengths & widths so this reduced the amount of boots I could try but enabled them to really see to my needs & guide me better. No request was too much for them. Even when staff were going to lunch, I was made aware of this & was told who would now be looking after me (I also heard the quick handover they have to each other of what I had tried on etc) so the new member of staff looking after me knew what was going on.

1 of the boots was uncomfortable on my foo (like a pressure point) rather than go up another size, we tried a different insole & it was a perfect fit. You don’t get these options in outdoor shops that sell boots.

I was very impressed by all the staff they were knowledgable & helpful (no hard sell) the boots do that for themselves.

I look forward to getting my new boots.

Quality boots

Bought Altberg boots after my Meindl boots deteriorated prematurely after relatively light use. I have to say that I've been very impressed with the quality of the Altberg boot. They are a more traditional looking boot than I have gone for in the past, but they do the job. Really well made and still going strong after three years of regular hikes/walks.

I have purchased 6 x pairs for my wife…

I have purchased 6 x pairs for my wife and I over the years courtesy of Taunton Leisure. In that time I have walked thousands of miles in the U.K. and Spain and France. Thus, they are perfect for all conditions. That is as a consequence of robust materials and functional design. I have never turned an ankle in them. Yes, they are expensive, customer service on re-soling is slow and staff can be blunt, but I keep two pairs on the go all the time to allow for that. Incidentally Taunton leisure do an excellent fitting service.

I purchased an expensive pair of boots…

I purchased an expensive pair of boots from Altberg just before the first lockdown in 2020, they are a 3-4 season boot and because I have had them before and they were very robust I thought I'd take the plunge and buy another pair after my first pair needed replacing. In June 2021 I noticed a crack in the leather which was causing water to leak in after walking in the rain or through the wet country. I sent the boots away after correspondence with them at the beginning of August, I was told the return time would be 6 weeks. I used these boots everyday, so to be without them for 6 weeks was a bit of a nightmare but they needed fixing. after I posted them to Altberg I contact them to let them know I'd sent them and could they let me know when they received them and whether they could do the work necessary, it took three weeks for the company to respond to my email and I was told they could sort it out and would charge me £25 for a sole replacement which is usually £70 because the boots were in such condition. I received my boots back, eventually after Altberg saying they should be back early next week. Next week came and went and no boots arrived. I contacted them again at the end of September to ask how much longer they would take to have my boots back with me. The email I got was "once they are ready we will contact you for payment"! Not quite what I asked!!
I got my boots back mid August, I wore them for a few days and one day I got caught in torrential rain and lo and behold.............the boots leaked. I contacted Altberg to receive two quite curt responses. The first blaming me for not being clear of what the problem was? If they are boot specialists they should have examined the boot and the sole - I even sent a picture in prior to sending the boots off showing the problem. The second email response I got was claiming that they had already rectified the problem.
Any decent company would have:
A) apologised for the lengthy delay
B) Asked for the boots to be returned for them to have another look at them, not send two arsey emails back.

Lets just put it this way, I won't ever buy Altberg again and I certainly won't be recommending them to anyone.
You should be ashamed of how you have dealt with this case and I hope this review makes some people avoid you for future purchases.
Appalling customer service and company itself

I love my Warrior Aqua boots

I love my Warrior Aqua boots. They are completely waterproof, even when standing in running water and as far as "old school" leather boots go, they are light and comfortable. I upgraded to a Svartz footbed which is much more cushioned than the original. Like everything in life there are trade offs with the footbed designs. The high quality boot leather needs looking after so be sure to get the ledergris/extreme they sell to keep your boots healthy and learn how to look after leather boots. Ignoring this step could very quickly destroy a good pair of boots. I often wear my boots in deep mud and water and with care the leather is looking in great condition. I'm not sure how many miles I have walked but it must be 500+ and the soles still have 50% life in them. More than I can say for the trail runners I bought that cost nearly the same price. Tarmac walking will wear the soles much faster than fell walking.
So if you want a great quality pair of leather boots that you will lovingly clean and dry and dubbin so they last a long time, have a look at Altberg.
P.S. They are great on the motorbike too, dry and warm.
P.P.S. They do a resoling service for when the soles are shot but the boots are still good.

Avoid at all costs

Very, very poor company. The customer service is the worst I have ever encountered, and I've been buying walking boots for 40 years. I attended the store in Richmond for a boot fitting, the boots I eventually received (after four months wait) were half a size too small. Altberg refused to rectify the situation. Indeed, the "customer service" person tried to argue it was my fault. Avoid at all costs!

The Altberg falsely trade on only UK manufacturer

The Altberg website proudly states they are a Yorkshire boot maker established in 1989. But all of their standard size walking boots are made in their factory in Italy, only their bespoke special fitment boots are made in Yorkshire. The website does not mention this and falsely trades on “made in Yourkshire”

Altberg Nordkapp Boots

I have no idea why this company has so many good reviews.
My husband and I both bought Altberg Nordkapp boots thinking at the eye-watering price we would be buying great quality products. Within less than 18 months the soles on both are parctically worn out and mine are no longer water proof and have cracked. Altberg have shown no interest whatsoever in our issues despite still being under warranty. We will now need to buy new boots, which will not be Altbergs. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Chris Simmons

After walking over 1000 miles my 12 year old Mallerstang boots had one of the soles partly detach. I sent them to Altberg and used their level 2 resoling service. Just received them back with new soles, rand, foot bed, laces, waxed and a tin of Leder Gris. The boots are like new except their already broken in. I can't think of another boot manufacture which offers this. What a fantastic service. Can very much recommend their boots and resoling. I also have a pair of Tethera's which are excellent. Would give more than 5 stars if I could.

Superb Quality - top end products

I have been wearing Altberg boots for over 20 years now, they really are a top end product.
I have had a couple of Peacekeepers and more recently the Aqua sneekers. (well worth the extra cash)
Superb quality, really comfortable and will take just about anything you throw at them. You will easily get years of hard use out of them.
As a company they are really easy to deal with - an actual person picks up the phone - true story!
There is a reason why military and police around the world but these boots - they are the best - plain and simple.
As a walking boot by the time you wear them out you will be scratching your head to remember when you actually bought them.
It is worth buying the leather care they recommend - it does make a difference and extends the life of the boot.

Not good for foot patrols !

Ideal boots if you’re not patrolling on foot all day !. My feet have been aching badly from patrolling the streets, even tried alternative insoles but still no joy. For general duties which includes short term walking they are brilliant and highly recommended but walking for 3-4 hours on concrete and tarmac twice a day i have found them uncomfortable and have resorted to alternate boots unfortunately. I feel the sole is too dense which helps with longevity but not with comfort. Absolutely Gutted !!. Maybe a specific foot patrol boot could be designed for those who don’t have the luxury of patrolling areas in a car.

My Beloved Altbergs

My Beloved Altbergs, after many miles of hard wear and tear leaked due to my toes wearing out the liner.
Altberg relined, treated and returned them in record time for a very reasonable price. Outstanding service, both on the phone and post, all during lockdown. Cannot recommend them enough. These are only the second pair in nearly 40 years having walked all over the place.

Altberg Tethera: My pair are waterproof.

Bought a pair late August from Craigdon in Edinburgh for £230.
Beautiful fit, and so comfortable. Finally took them to the hills late October and thought things were a bit 'iffy' during the first outside trip.
Second trip came down off the hill and felt localised damping above my big toe which was confirmed on my return home.
I returned them back to Craigdon on a Saturday and they were returned to me the following Friday after they had assessed them to be waterproof.
I was to say the least, skeptical!
However, it was suggested to me that I might consider wearing a wicking type sock.
I had previously bought a pair of 'smartwool' Merino type socks when I purchased the boots, but had yet to try them out.
And so I took to the hills the next day on a 16km trek which took me across some very challenging terrain. There were many occasions whereupon my boots were heavily immersed in mud and I had trailed through numerous puddles.
On my return home my wife had the phone ready to film the boot removal.
The result; there was moisture on my sock which had been dispersed through the wicking effect of the 'Smartwool' sock. On the previous occasion there was a localised wet patch on a pair of cotton socks that I had worn because I couldn't be bothered to change them when heading into the hills to catch the sunset.
My wife had seen the photo, but on this occasion she said that in her humble opinion that the moisture was sweat!
And so I now conclude that my new Altberg Tethera boots are indeed waterproof.
This is my first experience of leather boots since I switched from leather to a pair of Summer season Berghaus Goretex walking boots in 1991 to trek with in the Pyrenees.
I have never returned to wearing leather walking boots since then.
These boots are extremely comfortable but from now on I will always need to wear them with a quality pair of Merino wool socks.
I intend to walk with them on The Pennine Way next year but for day trip walking at the height of summer I would probably favour a much lighter boot.
