Wide range of types & fittings; superb quality and service
I originally went to Altberg as most boots on the market were too narrow to fit me well (I don't know if it is true, but I have heard British feet are typically quite wide). I went to them as they have a good range of width fittings, but it turned out their standard boot me very well (maybe because they are a British firm?) I am very prone to getting blisters but my Altberg boots (McKinley) have been comfortable for very long days on big Scottish hills.
My first pair of McKinleys lasted about 6 or 7 years of regular use, with one refurbishment along the way. My second pair are still going strong after 10 years (probably as I have kids now so the walks are a bit gentler).
I also have a pair of their motorcycle boots over 10 years old, which have had almost daily use the whole year round, and they are still going strong. The lining has worn through in a couple of places but the leather (and the Leder Gris wax) is so good they're still almost totally waterproof!
Update: my old bike boots are still going, but I also have a pair of the Hogg boots (lace up bike boots), which they made for me in brown. I bought these as they comfortable all day. In fact for winter walking they make a brilliant walking boot/wellington hybrid, as well as a bike boot.
The British factory also makes it easy to get minor repairs (e.g. they renewed the velcro on my bike boots for free), and you can get soles replaced at the factory too. Sadly they do not offer the full refurbishment service any longer.
Service is conducted with typical Yorkshire efficiency; if you are looking for advice, ambiguity is unlikely to be a problem.
Excellent service and boots
My wife ordered some Alt-Berg boots for work (police). She spoke to a lady on the phone who offered a good police discount and the boots arrived promptly. She had the intention of ordering some wax but had forgotten to do so. When she opened the box for the boots, Alt-Berg had even added a tin of Leder Gris for free. The boots are very comfortable and have held up so far to some poor Scottish weather. I couldn't recommend the company highly enough.
I had almost given up hope... Altberg rescued me!
Having unsuccessfully tried to find a pair of suitable walking books on the High Street, I was recommended Altberg since they produce qulaity boots in wide fittings. I duly visited the website and decided to take a risk by following the fitting advice and ordering online..... I need not have worried! The boots in XW fitting have fitted like slippers straight out of the box. On Forums I have read of many convert to the brand..... you can add me to that list! Well worth the money and am now going to have my partner fitted for her pair of Fremingtons!
