Altberg Kisdon wear down too quickly

There are three reasons for given Alberg Kisdon only one star.

1) Alberg Kisdon are the only boots to give me black toe nails on both feet, no boots or shoes have given me this problem before.

2) After 18 months of wear the heels have worn down to about 1mm and the soles are catching up fast, I expect a much longer life from boots costing this much.

3) I contacted Alberg about the problems, but they don’t appear interested, but they will re-sole them for about £60-£75, not worth it if I have to have them resoles again in 18months time.

Cannot fault them.

Cannot fault them.
I have had the altberg defender the sneeker the sneeker aqua the jungle boots and now the new blueline boot. Used them for running, walking, military and everyday use.

Everytime I have purchased a set of boots these guys have plenty of knowledge on the phone and always send my items quickly.
The quality is always great.

Altberg Tether boot review

I've had a pair of men's Altberg Tethera size 10 boots for a little over a year now. I've worn them in the Cairngorms, the Lake District and North Wales as well as regular local walks.

The boots are robust and well-made from good-quality leather, with minimal sticking thanks to one-piece upper. They are very waterproof - great on boggy ground especially with gaiters - and the leather is still in good condition after a year of use, apart from the inevitable bit of scuffing at the toe. I use Altberg's Leder-gris wax to treat them. People used to lightweight boots will find them a little on the heavy side, but not desperately so.

The sole is quite stiff; not fully rigid, but with only a little flex. Not a problem in itself. My main gripe is that the Vibram soles are made from a hard-compound rubber. This was a surprise as some reviews have suggested they are made from a soft rubber. The combination of stiff sole and hard rubber means the boots tend to wobble on hard, uneven ground. A softer rubber would help on hard ground and with shock absorption, and might improve grip on wet rock. I've invested in Svartz footbeds with extra cushioning (available from Altberg's website), which give improved shock-absorption and comfort over the originals. I suspect the purpose of the hard rubber is to reduce wear and make the sole more durable.

The lace lock is a useful feature that helps to lace the boots as tight as you need.

So on the whole, a comfortable, well-made and robust boot, waterproof, durable, but make the soles from softer rubber!

Not happy

I bought a pair of Sneeker Aqua boots last week, which retail at circa £200. Having worked in the emergency services for the past 22 years, I have worn many boots. I did get a discount of around £50, which was welcome, however even with the discount this is a premium price and I would expect a premium boot. I chose the sneeker aqua, as in my role I can walk up to 10 miles a day, in all weathers, so needed something comfortable, waterproof and smart. The sneeker aqua seemed to fit the bill, going off the description. Upon wearing the boot, it felt ok, not massively comfortable but you don't expect a new boots to be 100% straight away. After a few minutes of wearing them in the house it was clear that the leather was very creased over the front of the boots. The website makes it clear that they will not accept returns if the boots have crease marks on them. They look about 5 years old after a week to the point where colleagues were making comments about how scruffy they look. To top it off they were not all that comfortable either. I emailed Altberg to ask them if this was normal and to let them know I’m not happy. I got a reply a few days later which stated that, yes, the boot is designed for comfort so soft leather is used which creases. If this was included in the description I would not have purchased them. The upshot is I have had to go back to my old boots, made from normal leather, which were always more comfortable, even new, and still, six years later look much smarter than a one week old pair of Altberg boots.

You can also gauge the level of customer service by how they reply to reviews left online. Is speaks volumes.

Brilliant customer service

Bought a pair of alt-berg tabbing boots from the factory store in Richmond in preparation for P-company. After a couple of months I noticed that the tread was very worn down on the inside (likely due to my gait), and this in itself was starting to cause issues (ie horrendous heel blisters). My P-company was less than 2 weeks away, and I called the factory store and they suggested I post them the boots and they would have a look at them - they managed to resole the boots and have them ready for me to collect within 3 days!! I was also recommended a pair of high arched insoles which did the trick and I had no issues whatsoever with the boots while on P coy. Thank you very much alt-berg team!!

Boots caused a great deal of pain

Boots caused me a great deal of pain, but because they were so expensive I stuck with them up to the point that a podiatrist told me to stop wearing them immediately, it was his opinion that there was a fault with the boots, After a lot of rigmarole including driving half way across the country for a fitting with one of their dealers which was fine I sent the boots back to altberg who dismissed it as a fitting issue and are sending the boots back, I guess so I can throw them away myself.
I would certainly not recommend altberg and could have brought 3 pairs of much better made boots for the price and saved myself a lot of pain, wasted time and aggravation.
This is the first bad review I have ever felt compelled to make on the internet and If I could give minus stars I would.

Unbelievably good

Unbelievably good products and price....and they know their stuff.

I have slightly unusual shaped feet including bunions and I have struggled to get quality footwear for walking and motorcycling. Recently a friend who lives and works in Richmond took me round to the Alt-Berg factory where he used to work and helped me get a bit of a discount. I now have one pair of shoes, one pair of light summer walking boots, one fully waterproof fell walking pair and two pairs of motorcycle boots, they’re all brilliant - I’m a convert!

To give and example of why I’m so delighted, let me give the example of one pair of motorbike boots. A chap at the Richmond factory measured and assessed my feet and dug out a long disused last to suit my feet better than current lasts in production use, then made further adjustments to the fit on top of this.. These boots hold the highest CE safety rating possible (level 2,2,2,2 for impact, abrasion, cuts and crush, plus test passes for waterproofing, anti slip, anti oil etc.). Despite the high protection level they fitted like a glove and felt like big carpet slippers from the first time I put them on. To buy similarly protective ‘off the shelf’ boots from a firm like Daytona would cost WELL more than double the price I paid and Daytona don’t offer the custom fitting or the durability Alt-Berg are renowned for. How on EARTH do they do it and do it so consistently well? I’ve watched one pair of my boots being made in the Yorkshire factory and take great pride and comfort in owning something so special. Absolutely brilliant!

Just not good enough

It's now some time since I bought the Hogg boots after reading some good reviews.
Their web says that wider sizes can be made. The problem is that a visit has to be made to the factory. Living abroad at the time this was not possible, and so I asked that the next wider size be made, and that I would not return them should they prove not right. There was no way they would co-operate; this is customer service?
The boots are a very tight fit (ok, that's down to my decision) but they are VERY difficult to get on. Whereas my Miendl boots I use for summer (and are another military boot) are sooo easy to put on.
If you're thinking of buying Hoggs, be very careful.
Would I reccomend them - definately not.

Exception quality and service

This is the second pair of boots that I’ve purchased and I can’t fault either pair. Ok they may be at the top end of the market price wise but you get what you pay for. The customer service is also second to none, I ordered a pair of boots on the Sunday of the last bank holiday weekend and they were delivered on the Wednesday. I also ordered a pair of foot beds which were missing from the order these turned up the day after notifying Altberg of the issue. All in all they offer a first class product and service, the only place to buy your new boots

I’m on my 3rd pair of Defenders in 15 years. Comfortable & waterproof in all my usage on Dartmoor, an area that can throw some pretty extreme climate at you.
None of the boots has exhibited any quality faults & have remained long service items. I’ve used Leder-Gris & Glos a lot. Wether these treatments are better than Dubbin is debatable.
In summary, an impressive “issue” boot that works for me.

This is a "so far " review

This is a "so far " review. I haven't tested the boots on the hill yet. The fitting service and advice in the factory shop was excellent. The price was cheaper than similar quality boots in a well known outdoor shop in Keswick (where I have previously bought and been happy with). Conversation with staff indicated that they are not entirely happy with Brexit as the company looks to loose military contracts with EU...so I think ....OK-- if EU refuse to buy in the future then we hill walkers should stick to UK companies and refuse to buy EU made boots. (my previous boots were German make)
Editing February 2019-- am very happy with boots - they have taken me comfortably and dry though snow, deep mud and almost ankle deep burns
Reviewing again December 2019. Boots doing well, Even more comfortable after time. Love the lace locking system. Happy to recommend the company and these boots (tethera) to anyone

local shoes for local poeple

Bought a pair of police safety boots as they do a wide fit size 11 1/2. I didn't mind paying more than you usually would as I thought they were made at the Richmond factory in the UK.Hoping to support local businesses and what not. Sadly I was disappointed to find they are made in Italy and are not up to scratch. The military boots are spot on and worth the money but compared with Jolly boots, Hiax or even Grisport these safety boots are pony. Not water proof/ stiff fit (for >130 I'd expect a pair of slippers) eyelets had trashed a set of laces in under a month. I'll me buying my next set of boots direct from Italy and spend the remainder on biscuits.

Fantastic boots shame about the customer service.

Fantastic boots, unbeatable. Such a shame the same can't be said for the customer service which I can only describe as somewhat surly. They are slow to answer messages left online if they answer at all and when you ring them they always sound disinterested or tetchy, not what you expect when you spend £200 on a pair of boots.

Items sent from them other than boots (footbeds, leder-gris etc) are packaged like a five-year-old did it, shoved into an old envelope, quick messy sellotape job then the address scrawled on in biro.

In my humble opinion, this company makes some of the finest boots in the world and it's a pity that they seem to know it and don't provide polite, modern, efficient customer service to match.

Amazing!!!!

wanted to share my experience went into Altberg's London outlet in Kensington I got seen by there in store Podiatrist who did a complete and free bio mechanical assesment he managed to understand and verify the foot problems I have been having for the last several years I went down the route of having custom medical orthotics made and a pair of Altberg Fremington's. I have been wearing the boots and the orthotics now for about 6 weeks and can say they are the best boots I have ever worn. If your in London and want to get fitted properley then I would visit the Altberg shop in Kensington its called Altimus .

Rude customer service

Having bought another pair of altberg sneakers I thought they would last as long as my last pair but from day 1 the leather material on the inside was missing and the lace buckle started to rub on my foot. I took them back to the shop I bought them from to send them back to altberg. They had them over 2 weeks only to turn around and say there's nothing wrong with them. They were rude and kept telling me to speak to whom ever I bought them from. Not the customer service I was expecting from such a large company. Not acceptable
