Beesley & Fildes were established in 1820, and it has taken nearly two hundred years to turn the once small firm into the large enterprise that it is today. In the early 1800's it was common practice for a son to follow his fathers footsteps with regards to his chosen profession. This was not the case for 21 year old Robert Beesley. What made his decision even more unusual was that his ancestors were all professional beer tasters! Robert Beesley decided that a beer tasters life was not for him, and in the 1820's set himself up as a master painter, plumber, and glazier with a shop in Prescot. In 1841 Robert Beesley's son James joined him. After operating from the same premises for almost fifty years, James decided to move the business. The extra space allowed James to expand his range, and also began to sell to other tradesmen in the area. On his death in 1887, James passed the running of the business over to his sons, Joseph and William. After WWI William's son William-Joseph who was injured whilst in service, asked his brother-in-law, expert craftsman and grainer James Fildes to join him. The pair pooled their gratuity money to expand the business, and as a result the Beesley & Fildes name came into being. In 1947 William's sons, Jack and Bill joined Beesley & Fildes. Then in the 1980's Bill retired and Jack Beesley was in turn joined by his three sons, John, Paul & Gerard. In 1987, the family expanded the business by opening a new yard in Huyton, where a purpose built timber yard and mill were opened. New yards were acquired in Liverpool in 1995, Birkenhead in 1997 then Chester and Prestatyn in 1999. The year 2000 saw the opening of a new dedicated plumbers & tile merchants and a bathroom showroom in the Liverpool depot, which imports tiles directly from manufacturers in Spain and Italy. In 2001 HSS Agency Hire Shops were opened in the Huyton & Prestatyn branches. In 2003, a new roofing centre was built in Huyton, a new branch in Warrington was acquired. In 2004 the Prestatyn branch was sold also in 2004 Colin Myers Timber Ltd was purchased. In 2006 the extensive refurbishment of the Colin Myers Timber site was completed, a new roofing centre was added to the Warrington Depot and James Whitakers Garden Centre in Prescot was acquired. Back in the 1820's when the young Robert Beesley decided to give ale testing a miss and set up on his own, he could never have anticipated that the firm he founded, passed down from father to son through the generations would still be trading today

Working hours are from a different planet.
I found the business to have extremely limited and outdated opening hours, which are highly inconvenient for customers. On a recent visit, I arrived at 11:55 a.m. on a Saturday—five minutes before their stated closing time of 12:00 p.m.—yet I was refused service because the till had already been closed. This felt unreasonable and poorly managed.
As a result, I am now forced to wait several days until they reopen, with no assurance that the experience will be any better.
Furthermore, when I mentioned that I intended to report the incident, a member of staff raised their voice and accused me of swearing. This allegation was completely unfounded, as I did not use any inappropriate language. The situation was handled in an unprofessional and confrontational manner, which made the experience even more uncomfortable.
Overall, this reflects poor customer service, lack of flexibility, and inefficient operations. I would not recommend this establishment.

Dense blocks.
Took a delivery of dense blocks. There were two different batches, one perfect, the other batch were 5 mm smaller in height and some tapered from 215-210. This made it awkward for levelling.
My wife paid by card online for a bag…
My wife paid by card online for a bag of cement and 4 bags sand from beesley & Fildes Huyton branch
I drove to collect said items to be told I can’t have them because I didn’t have photo ID with me !!!
I said we’ve already paid for it and I want the items the assistant refused said I would need photo ID
I called my wife who could not believe it
Evidently it says on the email you need photo ID we never saw this he said because of fraud and was not helpful
I then said cancel transaction
He said he can’t
I told him to get someone who can!!
He spoke on phone to someone who said to cancel it !!!!
So he cancelled it then told me my wife will have to wait 3/5 working days for the money to go back into her account which is a complete insult
I then bought the said items on my Apple Pay with no problem
The whole thing was a unnecessary disgrace
The amount was £21 the assistant was totally inflexible and knew I was genuine
My custom will go elsewhere from now on
And my wife’s money makes interest for this company
Awful customer relations
Initial contact with the team in…
Initial contact with the team in webservices was not great – 2 failed telephone calls and an email requesting a quote for national delivery of porcelain tiles. Received a basic response confirming that national delivery was available but no quote was provided and told that it was all automated on the website. Attempted to process an order online to ascertain what the national delivery cost would be but to no avail. By this point, and noting that they are a family run business, I was not too impressed with the service and was about to abandon purchasing from Beesley & Fildes when I received a call the following morning from Liam from the Widnes branch. Liam went out of his way to assist – almost immediately provided me with a quote for national delivery; took photographs of the tiles as I wanted to double check the colour and waited patiently on the phone whilst I found my credit card details! It would have been 5 stars had I dealt with Liam from the beginning, but unfortunately the initial services in the webservices team has let the company down.

Ordered 3 bulk bags of mot, disappointed with the amount I got in the bags.
Bags now smaller and only 3 quarters full so I now need to order another bag to make up for the loss costing me more money. Won't be ordering from them again.

Could not fault driver, delivery or time taken to deliver.... Just got to do the hard work myself now!
I cannot speak about any other Beesley…
I cannot speak about any other Beesley and Fildes branch than their one in Widnes. I don't have much experience in any of the others as Widnes is always my go to from back in the 'Colin Myres' days. So this review is for the Widnes branch.
Honestly, I couldn't wish for better service, better staff communication or a better team to help. I don't use them as much as others who are full time in the trade but I do use them a lot. I have spent £thousands of pounds on timber with them over the years and for good reason. They have never, EVER given me a reason to buy from elsewhere.
I have recently been in to buy timber on behalf of the school I work in (we are building a 50m fence on our perimeter) and once again received an excellent service from them. Nothing was too much effort from their sales rep. which to be fair is the norm' at this branch...even when I go in and want to pick out specific wood at specific lengths and even with specific grain (for my own use). They really are - in my opinion - a great crew.
Excellent customer service
Excellent customer service provided by Andrea,
the product she recommended (Frake tgv cladding ) was great value and looks amazing, Andrea's expertise on installation and how to maintain the product was second to none, although this was not a large order the care and attention taken over my order means I would have no hesitation in purchasing again
Totally shambolic and a waste of time
I put in an online order and a week later after nothing happened I emailed them to ask when my order would be delivered. They responded 2 days later saying shipping was not added to the order and they wanted twice what the site was quoting for this order. Wrote back pointing that out to Dave Hughes, Web Sales Administrator, and his reply demanded to split the order in two and charge now 4 times the initial quoted shipping.
Do not be fooled by their cheap prices - disorganization, indifference and ripp-off attitude would cost you dearly with them - move on!!
Professional and Efficient
Really good company to trade with business to business. Andrea has been excellent help and very quick with her responses to sort any issues. Would highly recommend.
Excellent
Very good service and competitive pricing, the lads in the yard are fantastic they loaded my lorry.
We thought that we had found the answer…
We thought that we had found the answer to an ongoing problem. We wanted some Black fascia board 5 metres long and some accessories. B&F had the goods at a good price and reasonable delivery cost so we placed our order. Had an email confirmation back so all good! 25 minutes later we had another email apologising and to say that they are having problems with national delivery and the length of these items exceed what the carrier can handle! Surely this isn't a surprise! Sort out the website so that you can't order parts over a certain length. Or suggest an alternative option!
thanks for coming back to me. I don't see any alternative in the email I received. Hi Barry,
Thank you for your order, we are experiencing issues on offering national delivery unfortunately the capping exceeds the permitted length allowed by our carrier a full refund has been processed apologies for any inconvenience caused
Regards

Thanks so much Andrea at Widnes 🙂
Andrea made this (hopefully) glowing review easy to compose. It's not often you find an employee who actually seems to care about the service they provide. She had a wealth of knowledge, a good degree of patience and such a friendly nature, that - for someone like me (a bit socially awkward), I was put immediately at ease.
Incidentally, the red cedar cladding Andrea recommended was excellent value and quality.

Fantastic delivery driver
I can't recommend enough. I ordered on Friday evening and received my confirmation but my delivery email disappeared from my outlook account. In a panic, I emailed asking for help. I was advised the delivery details in a timely manner.
Come delivery day we had a nightmare as my street is horrendous for parking. Someone had parked awkwardly blocking the way for the lorry. The young lad was a godsend. He went out of his way to find out whose car it was and knocked on but there was no answer. After around 15 mins trying to find a way. We agreed for him to return later once the car was moved. He said to call as soon as the car was moved and he would come back. Thankfully the cars owner arrived and moved it.
He was absolutely brilliant, nothing was too much for him, he remained patient and unphased.

Website is a waste of time…
Website is a total nightmare of ineptitude and bad design. I tried to buy some wood but kept getting a message about a technical error. I then tried to phone - guess what no answer.
Then I decided to go in person to the huyton branch. First thing I saw was a group of employees stood around smoking, laughing and joking. So I walked.
Not recommended. There are several other competitors who
A. have websites that work properly and are easy to navigate.
B. answer the phone promptly.
C. serve the public efficiently.
D. Show their prices Inc vat.
Avoid these b&f people. Save yourself the grief and frustration and go elsewhere. Not recommended sadly.
Huyton branch.

Horrendous company to work for
Horrendous company to work for, led by a toxic culture from the MD who brings his personal issues into the workplace and never know from one day to the next what the atmosphere will be like.
Managers rule with an iron fist, and prices seem to change daily leaving customers without any idea what they'll be paying and the staff on the front line bearing the brunt.
Things used to be so much different pre pandemic but the atmosphere now is so unpleasant.
Glad to get out of the place
Glad to get out of the place, staff turnover is horrendous nobody wants to stay there and as a result all the replacements are clueless or don’t want to do a day’s graft. Takes ages to get served and you are very lucky if you get the same price twice, I’m sure they make them up as they go.
The quality of the Timber sold there is poor, it is either warped or full of knotholes, wouldn’t think they had their own Mill. Gone down the nick since Myers days.
Too many fat Cat Managers strutting around talking rubbish all day and doing very little else and most of the +ve reviews here are written by them.
“Family run business”??? Which family the Simpsons or the Borgias?
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE , stick with the nationals you get better quality and service.
Disgusting service from a man behind…
Disgusting and nasty service from a man behind the desk at Widnes.
Shouted at us and told us to hurry up because he was leaving at 12.
Absolutely NO need to speak to customers the way he did. I suggest he receives some form of training on how to speak to customers. Horrible.
Website still poor
Come on, you're making a fortune, spend a few quid on the website.
