Beesley & Fildes were established in 1820, and it has taken nearly two hundred years to turn the once small firm into the large enterprise that it is today. In the early 1800's it was common practice for a son to follow his fathers footsteps with regards to his chosen profession. This was not the case for 21 year old Robert Beesley. What made his decision even more unusual was that his ancestors were all professional beer tasters! Robert Beesley decided that a beer tasters life was not for him, and in the 1820's set himself up as a master painter, plumber, and glazier with a shop in Prescot. In 1841 Robert Beesley's son James joined him. After operating from the same premises for almost fifty years, James decided to move the business. The extra space allowed James to expand his range, and also began to sell to other tradesmen in the area. On his death in 1887, James passed the running of the business over to his sons, Joseph and William. After WWI William's son William-Joseph who was injured whilst in service, asked his brother-in-law, expert craftsman and grainer James Fildes to join him. The pair pooled their gratuity money to expand the business, and as a result the Beesley & Fildes name came into being. In 1947 William's sons, Jack and Bill joined Beesley & Fildes. Then in the 1980's Bill retired and Jack Beesley was in turn joined by his three sons, John, Paul & Gerard. In 1987, the family expanded the business by opening a new yard in Huyton, where a purpose built timber yard and mill were opened. New yards were acquired in Liverpool in 1995, Birkenhead in 1997 then Chester and Prestatyn in 1999. The year 2000 saw the opening of a new dedicated plumbers & tile merchants and a bathroom showroom in the Liverpool depot, which imports tiles directly from manufacturers in Spain and Italy. In 2001 HSS Agency Hire Shops were opened in the Huyton & Prestatyn branches. In 2003, a new roofing centre was built in Huyton, a new branch in Warrington was acquired. In 2004 the Prestatyn branch was sold also in 2004 Colin Myers Timber Ltd was purchased. In 2006 the extensive refurbishment of the Colin Myers Timber site was completed, a new roofing centre was added to the Warrington Depot and James Whitakers Garden Centre in Prescot was acquired. Back in the 1820's when the young Robert Beesley decided to give ale testing a miss and set up on his own, he could never have anticipated that the firm he founded, passed down from father to son through the generations would still be trading today

Service desk excellent, delivery drivers rude.

Service desk at Widnes was excellent however, the delivery drivers were rude and unhelpful. They moaned about having more deliveries to do but the truck was empty after ours. They literally just dumped the timber at the end of the path and went. Oh, and funnily enough it was a Friday afternoon 🤔

Website has technical issues always

Website has technical issues always. I couldn't check out "White Pebbles 20-40mm 20kg Bag" from the website. It showed that it was available in several stores including Warrington which had 48 in Stock. I drove from Preston down to Warrington, made payment for ONLY 2 bags only for the guy at the warehouse end to say they are out of stock.

I went back into the store and the guy at the till argued they still have it, he went to the warehouse only to be told the same thing. He apologized and said they had it in the morning but someone must have come and bought everything.

I remembered asking him when i got inside if they had it and he said they have 44 bags or so. I could tell immediately that the story of someone came and bought everything was a cheap lie because he had nothing reasonable to say.

I asked if they could deliver and they couldn't help. This Company still lives in the stone age i guess. Will take the business elsewhere. Zero star for them!

Would give minus if possible. Nobody answers phones

Would give minus if possible.
Ordered 800kg Blue slate got a mixture mostly plum some green no blue in sight.
Tesco sell blue in 20kg bags IT’S ALL BLUE
Took 3 days to get through to the almost non-existent sales team (nobody answers and sometimes you are asked to leave a message mostly it cuts off, makes no difference as nobody gets back anyway) only to wait another 2 days to be told 'it varies from quarry to quarry' whilst I did not expect exact colour match from PC screen blue is blue and plum is not.
Only got through in the end by calling 6 times on the trot every time the (pleasant but stressed) receptionist put me through to another dead end I redialled.
I need another large bag but figure better off buying 40 x20kg bags from ANYWHERE but this bunch of unprofessional clowns.

Used online contact form and sent seperate email with my enquiry. No response even after follow up enquiry. Just for clarification it was a sensible question about a potential order well over £150 in value. Common courtesy even to just acknowledge contact goes a long way to remove the impression that you take customers for granted, but if thats what you are aiming for....nailed it. Bookmark removed.

Excellent service at Huyton kitchen & bathroom branch

Visited the kitchen and bathroom shop in Huyton after getting a quote on line (very prompt I may add). Was served by Neil Whelan and ordered my extra cupboard door. When Neil phoned to say the door was in, he said he would drop it off on his lunch break as he would be in the area. Excellent service. Would definitely recommend. Thank you Neil!!

What a pleasure! Such a refreshing change.

What a pleasure!

I must say that this builders’ merchants provides excellent customer service.

I contacted Beesley and Fildes in Walkden to order sand and cement, along with buckets and a trowel.

The man who took my order was really helpful and displayed an excellent sense of humour during our telephone conversation.

He took all the necessary details asking me when I would like my delivery and agreed that it would arrive on a Thursday (ordered on Tuesday).

The following morning my husband asked me to contact them again to add some Plasticiser to the order - this was less than £8.
No sooner had I put the phone down the doorbell rang. It was the delivery of sand and cement!

So - I recontacted Beesley’s to explain the situation to be told that it wasn’t a problem at all and that the Plasticiser would be delivered.

It has just arrived.

I would certainly recommend Beesley and Fildes in Walkden.

Prices are good, delivery is good and the staff are excellent!

Such a refreshing change.

the online store is pathetic

the online store is pathetic. First read the Terms & Conditions of Sale carefully. Then read the reviews. After that, if it suits you, you can buy goods. They bear no responsibility. I was thinking of ordering all the materials to replace the roof for £17,000.

Excellent service

Working in the area and needing some timber batons, went in here after being let down by Bridge Timber and the guys were extremely helpful and cut the timber batons exactly as requested. I also bought some Fischer plugs whilst in here.

Poor website, poor customer service.

We ordered a 1500mm birtley box lintel SB100HD off you. Due to your charge for delivery we order extra timber to make it to the £150.00 free delivery but on arrival we were sent the 1350m one. This was return to you by the very helpful driver who called his boss, Graham, who informed us he would call us back. After getting to 1pm and no call we call you chasing this. The reason we chased is we were going to travel to Widnes from Wallasey to pick this up, as your website stated there were 14 in stock and we need this lintel this weekend. When we pointed this out over phone we were informed that it was the wrong product code and you had non in stock. Poor website, poor customer service and a payout on our side for delivery/travel cost for your mistake.

Checkout not working on website with…

Checkout not working on website with identical failure on both computer and phone. Stock showing as available, so I drove 40 miles to pick up. Ignorant assistant who lacked any drive glanced around and said we haven't got any. When I told him it was on the website as In Stock he replied that it doesn't get updated. Didn't know where other branches of business are and no offer to check stock elsewhere. Avoid these cowboys.

Hi Arthur,
Thanks for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry your experience didn’t match your expectations. It was an uncommon instance, and we’ll do better in the future.
I'm going to try and address the other issues you have raised -
1. The reason the checkout was not working is that you are outside of our delivery area, we deliver within a 30-mile radius.
2. The stock shown on our website is global stock unless you have selected a branch to order from, this is updated every 15 minutes.

Paul delivery driver from Grafton…

Paul delivery driver from Grafton Street branch dropped off wood this morning on time as promised. He was very polite and helpful brought the wood in to my garden and helped with the tarpaulin to cover it. How refreshing to have somebody like this even though he could not park in the street as it is very narrow he still never moaned.
