Beesley & Fildes were established in 1820, and it has taken nearly two hundred years to turn the once small firm into the large enterprise that it is today. In the early 1800's it was common practice for a son to follow his fathers footsteps with regards to his chosen profession. This was not the case for 21 year old Robert Beesley. What made his decision even more unusual was that his ancestors were all professional beer tasters! Robert Beesley decided that a beer tasters life was not for him, and in the 1820's set himself up as a master painter, plumber, and glazier with a shop in Prescot. In 1841 Robert Beesley's son James joined him. After operating from the same premises for almost fifty years, James decided to move the business. The extra space allowed James to expand his range, and also began to sell to other tradesmen in the area. On his death in 1887, James passed the running of the business over to his sons, Joseph and William. After WWI William's son William-Joseph who was injured whilst in service, asked his brother-in-law, expert craftsman and grainer James Fildes to join him. The pair pooled their gratuity money to expand the business, and as a result the Beesley & Fildes name came into being. In 1947 William's sons, Jack and Bill joined Beesley & Fildes. Then in the 1980's Bill retired and Jack Beesley was in turn joined by his three sons, John, Paul & Gerard. In 1987, the family expanded the business by opening a new yard in Huyton, where a purpose built timber yard and mill were opened. New yards were acquired in Liverpool in 1995, Birkenhead in 1997 then Chester and Prestatyn in 1999. The year 2000 saw the opening of a new dedicated plumbers & tile merchants and a bathroom showroom in the Liverpool depot, which imports tiles directly from manufacturers in Spain and Italy. In 2001 HSS Agency Hire Shops were opened in the Huyton & Prestatyn branches. In 2003, a new roofing centre was built in Huyton, a new branch in Warrington was acquired. In 2004 the Prestatyn branch was sold also in 2004 Colin Myers Timber Ltd was purchased. In 2006 the extensive refurbishment of the Colin Myers Timber site was completed, a new roofing centre was added to the Warrington Depot and James Whitakers Garden Centre in Prescot was acquired. Back in the 1820's when the young Robert Beesley decided to give ale testing a miss and set up on his own, he could never have anticipated that the firm he founded, passed down from father to son through the generations would still be trading today

Fantastic service from every single member of the Widnes branch.. from David on the phone to about 10 other members of their branch to help me finish my garden... they went "the extra mile" for me!! One of their staff even delivered my goods on his lunch hour!! Im amazed and have now told my neighbours who are always "busy doing jobs" on their houses

Please avoid
Please avoid. I made an order on the 12th of April for roof tiles. 11 days later they decide to tell me they have no stock and can't deliver tomorrow!
Nice one. Just wanted more than 2 working weeks! Let's see how long the refund takes. Try somewhere else if I were you.
wasted 2 days waiting on main part of delivery
not happy with this place at all, put a order in to Huyton, waited 5 days gfor delivery to have the main item of the delivery not delivered, soon as the driver left i was on the phone(11am) to get ask if he could call me back, 4 hours later no call back, I called back to get oh yeah I remember someone saying something about this. to then be asked if I really needed it now this day, as i had sent the fellas home (with pay) to say will come tomorrow. so WE thought first thing it will turn up with them messing the order up, NO sat waiting again, called up at 12 to be told, the driver will have his dinner, then we will be first to have are order dropped off. sat waiting yet again Paying people to sit in the sun. 3.45pm Driver turned up. 2 days of wasted getting nothing done. then the people had another job to go to, then we had rain. still not got it done. not a happy after what we have spent with them.
Great prices and fantastic customer service
Despite being based 200 miles away from Beesley & Fildes, we've used them a couple of times in recent months. Their prices are competitive and their customer service has been unbeatable, couldn't ask for more helpful & knowledgeable sales staff.
Not the best customer service
About 4 weeks ago I tried to purchase some skirting board from Beesley and Fildes at Radcliffe, I gave them the product code and they said they would get it in from Widnes. After a week I rang them and they said it was in stock. I went to the depot and found it to be the wrong type, they apologised and said the driver had picked up the wrong item and they would get the right one so I gave them a sample anyway. I called at the depot a week later and they hadn't got it in stock claiming the truck had been in an accident and that they would deliver the skirting board to my home address. A week later I called them as a reminder and the skirting was delivered a few days later, it was again the wrong type, I called them again and they said they would pick it up and deliver the correct item, I haven't heard from them since and the wrong skirting board is still at my house. This has now finally been corrected

Sharron at Credit Control
I just had dealings with Sharron at credit control attempting to find invoices from over 5 years ago for a VAT reclaim on my new build. Could not have asked for more help, what a delight to deal with and a real asset to Beesleys
Good Experience, Professional Staff
I have used Beesley & Fildes several times over the last 12 months or so. The reason I keep going back to them is the excellent service and competitive prices. I would single out Tony Carroll at Chester as being very helpful and definitely focused on giving the best customer experience.
Excellent service and staff Chester branch
Ordered fench panels and stone.all staff very helpful, manager Tony was extremely approachable and knowledgeable. The kitchens and bathrooms are very impressive, will define back to look further. I had read negative comments before going to branch, but in all fairness I found the Chester branch staff were All more than happy to help. I feel Instead of putting the branch down just go and deal with them face to face...in these hard times we should all try to support each other .,This branch has been open all through covid ..supplying stock to hospitals and cemeteries..well done Chester . The manager is very easy going and couldn't help enough. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Thanks Chester staff 👍
We ordered a small amount of premium…
We ordered a small amount of premium redwood PAR as described on their website. When it was unwrapped 12 meters out of 18 was infected with a blue fungus that had penetrated right through the wood and could not just be sanded off. Now I understand this fungus is not destructive in nature but the wood is for face work hence the premium purchase. On top of that, the second size timber that was ordered was warped down the center. I find it hard to imagine it can not be checked when such a small quantity is supplied for delivery. We sent photos in but as such heard nothing back. Very, very disappointing.

No Covid precautions, Uninterested staff.
Only one member of staff wearing a mask and that was only covering his mouth, I can only imagine he thinks that the Carona virus can not fit down his nostrils. Clearly the staff are not interested in protecting their customers. The staff were clearly not insisting on customers wearing masks either as I was the only one of ten to fifteen customers wearing one. I suggest the management visit Beers Timber to see how it should be done, polite and helpful staff, better prices and a safe shopping experience in these Covid times. Beers Timber is four times as far away for me to visit but I would rather lose the time and fuel and feel that my custom is valued.
Expensive, staff ignorant, customer care poor and what Covid-19!
I visited the Chester branch this morning. Having poor health (and so being at risk with the virus) I left my visit until nearer to closing time. I found staff hanging around chatting and unhelpful. As it was a struggle to make myself heard; with wearing the mask, instead of either guiding me to a quieter area or trying to listen it instead seemed like it was my problem that they couldn't hear. Eventually I was directed from the timber yard to the main counter to pay. This was inside and so I obviously wanted to take extra caution and hope that I could pay quickly. I waited a full 3 minutes before anyone "chatting" again came to assist. Although from my viewpoint I could see that they had seen me. Then the assistant couldn't read the writing from the timber yard guy! Following all this, then seemed that the computer system is such that it takes a full 5 minutes to do each transaction!! Or had it already been switched off in anticipation for closure... This was a small transaction of £8 (replacement batons for a back gate), the whole prolonged (the guy was typing on the till/computer for the whole 5 minutes..and I did time it) process seemed totally ludicrous for what I was buying.
And then, after all that the card terminal wasn't linked to the computer either! Meaning that the assistant then had to key in the price to the terminal too!
At one point (so stressed was I becoming) that I shouted (because of the mask) that I had health problems and couldn't this been done any quicker!!
Then on my return home, I found another timber yard that would have done same but for £3 less!
I have to still return to collect the treated wood but I won't be going back again after that and and pandemic...someone should perhaps tell B&F about it...because they don't seem to know!
