Bad experience all around

I will start by saying that I am partially responsible for the issues I had, and will not be making the same mistake again.

I purchased a Kona Gravel bike from bike exchange and had it sent to where I was going to be in the near future. The bike arrived when they said it would.

Fast forward to when I got to where the bike was. There was one really deep scratch down the side of the down-tube, some paint imperfections, and a handful of scuffs around the frame. I saved a couple hundred dollars, so I could live with it at this point. When I began trying to assemble the bike, I could not get the disc brakes adjusted and the wheels were locked up. I had a savvy bike friend of mine look at it, with the same problem.

I decided to take it to a shop to have it put together. They immediately discovered that there was a manufacturing defect that required the front fork to be replaced. They said it should be covered under warranty. My new bike couldn't be ridden yet.

I contacted bike exchange and they said, sorry, outside the 14 day return window, deal with Kona for warranty repair (I summarize). So now my bike sits in the shop, all scratched up and with a damaged fork. I'm waiting for the shop to figure it out with Kona. By the time it's done, I'll be done with my trip and probably won't really be able to ride it.

The lesson I have learned is to buy my bike from a local shop. It may cost more, but it will be set up, in actual new condition, and most shops give free maintenance for at least a certain period of time, if not lifetime. I would sell this bike if I could, but I would probably loose half of what it cost me. Instead, I'll just ride it like it is, and be frustrated with the experience every time I look at it. ALWAYS...buy it local from now on, is my mantra. Even if it costs double. It will save the headache.

Our return and exchange policy for purchases on BikeExchange states that any requests to return or exchange a product must be made within 14 days of receipt, and sent to either BikeExchange, or the seller. Your bike was delivered on March 16th, and we received your request on July 7th, which is unfortunately well outside of the return window for purchases on our site.

As we have discussed, the main issue with the bike (the manufacturing defect on the front brake mount), is an issue that is covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Kona's warranty process (https://konaworld.com/pages/warranty) requires that you take the bike to a Kona dealer, and they will assist in getting it resolved with Kona. We provided the name and location of a local dealer, and it seems that process is underway.

We're sorry that you're dealing with the warranty issue instead of out riding your bike. If we can assist in the warranty process in any way, shape, or form, please let us know and we're happy to help as best we can.

Cancellation of order and complete refund

I was very happy that BikeExchange was able to cancel an order I had placed. They were able to get in touch with the seller and handled the return and full refund efficiently and promptly.

Hi Suzanne, and thanks for reaching out to us. After you made your purchase on Saturday July 5th, you reached out to us on Sunday July 6th to request your order be cancelled. Our customer team was not working that day, and we responded to you via email on Monday morning July 6th. As you and I have discussed, BikeExchange is an online marketplace where bike shops all over the country can list their inventory for sale. Since one of our partner retailers in New York was fulfilling your order, we needed to contact them to be sure it hadn't shipped yet before providing a refund. We informed you of this on Monday, and then reached out to the seller immediately. They did not return the information to us until Tuesday afternoon, and at that point, the bike had already left the shop. You and I spoke on Wednesday, and I informed you that we placed a return to sender request on the bike, and as soon as it was turned around and headed back to the shop, we would provide a refund immediately. That occurred on Thursday morning, and the refund has since been processed in full. Because of the unique nature of our marketplace, we can't cancel transactions as quickly as we could if we fulfilled all orders ourself. Thanks for your patience as we worked through that process, and we hope to have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.

Website inventory not up to date!

I eventually found the bike I was looking for in the right size (small) on BikeExchange. Placed the order, got charged on my credit card and waited for delivery. After several days I received an email from their support that the bike is not available in size S. And they tried to sell me on an inferior bike for pretty much the same price. After refusing, they refunded my credit card payment. Lost 4 weeks of spring biking and some nerves. All I received was an apology from the support guy and a refund after them having my money for a week or so.

Very rarely, one of those shops will sell a bike in store and not immediately remove the listing from our site, which is what happened with the bike you purchased. We did our best to offer other options of in stock product that were close to the spec of the bike you had originally purchased, but could not locate another dealer who had that exact model in stock. You politely declined those options, and we processed a refund immediately. We're sorry that we couldn't fulfill your original order, and hope for the opportunity to assist you again in the future.

Great advice and customer service

At first they had not notified me of the bike that I had chosen was already sold. I got a hold of them and explained the situation. They promptly offer me an apology and corrected the situation by offering me plenty of other options. They asked me how they could fix the problem? Which I greatly appreciated. I was double charged which they quickly corrected.It was an overall great experience. And the bike was awesome.

BikeExchange is a great deal!

Bike showed up in perfect condition and in the time as described. I was on the fence about BikeExchange but this made me a believer! The only thing I can nitpick about is the bike came with a different size tire but in my favor 700x40 instead of the 700x35 and the cranks were supposed to be SRAM Force and the bike came with SRAM Rival.
