Regulator

Regulator? Gas Safe provide lip service only, in my experience they do absolutely nothing in regard to serious safety breaches on gas boiler installations. My boiler installation was installed by a Gas Safe registered business who left the install with a leak on the main gas pipe, which could have potentially caused a serious and life threatening incident. Not impressed by gas safe at all, their attitude shouts laziness and can’t be bothered. Not impressed at all.

When the regulator fails to work to standard

Croydon Plumbing & Heating started work on installing a system boiler on 8 July. The vertical flue immediately started leaking from the ceiling when it rained. It was not sealed. The sole trader flooded the house overnight after lying that he had drained the radiator system. The uncapped pipe was left to flow onto the wooden joists. He then disappeared saying he was not responsible for the water ingress and leaks- faking umbrage. He also charged £600 to install a 28mm gas pipe (an all day job he stressed) but which took 45 minutes. Reported him to Gas Safe who claimed the job was unfinished so nothing they could do. The Lead Service Manager wrote a particularly arrogant email. After WEEKS of this nonsense and showing evidence that the engineer’ had claimed to have fit the boiler flue and gas pipe to standard a gas inspector attended on 1 September. The new gas pipe had a leak and was still connected to the meter. The flue had not been installed properly and the holes letting in water were visible. Immediately dangerous installation.

17 days to fix defects came and went. The engineer still trading. No hot water or heating since 8 July. The engineer has demanded an additional £2.5k to fix his own defects. He has already been paid £1,900 for this ‘work’. Gas Safe have done NOTHING but protect HIM. They quote their code but do not follow their own policies on dealing with complaints or sanctioning rogue traders. They should not discriminate. I am so furious and so unwell.

I complained to TrustaTrader and the sole trader was banned very quickly. He resurfaced immediately on Checkatrade so I left a review. He told Checkatrade I wasn’t a customer. The dishonesty is so blatant.

I also contacted the CEO for help. I don’t want the ultimate decision maker at Gas Safe to claim he knew nothing. People who hide behind plausible deniability are just as complicit as the wrongdoers
Update
Gas Safe requested that I remove the initials of the actors who have failed to follow Gas Safe protocols or help me. Other reviews have names and initials. I will keep publicising the discriminatory behaviour towards me. 3 months without water and heating and the offending business still trading says how much Gas Safe protects the public.

Time wasters

I am a gas engineer. Gas safe have made 3 appointments with me to make sure I am safe and competent. They have cancelled all 3 appointment without good reason, this is costing me my time and money. They have not compensated me and have now made another appointment to see me. Really bad experience from me

On the 10th March 2023

On the 10th March 2023, I contacted the Gas Safe Register reference a potential unsafe installation by one of their registered installers. On the 13th March I received an email stating this issue had been logged. On the 15th March I then sent a reminder. Finally on the 17th March I was informed that they would reply in 5 days. On the 20th March I sent a reminder, and asked the next steps, where after 10 days I was informed a visit would be booked for one of their inspectors. Eventually on the 31st March 2023 the inspectors investigated.

Inspectors report was clear, and stated that the boiler installation was not up to the correct standards. I see 6 instances of where the report clearly states they have written to the installer requiring them to correct this defect by 17/04/2023.

After I received the report (5th April) I then proceeded to contact Gas Safe Register, to find out the next steps. I contacted on the 5th April, where he clearly stated in his email that I can employ another business to carry out the remedial work. I asked him how I would be compensated on the 6th April, and received no reply. Incidentally the inspector from Gas Safe had no contact details on his signature to contact him direct.

On the 13th April I sent email to the existing complaints address to say nobody had offered to rectify. The letting agent was also chasing the installer to fix this and received no reply. I then sent a reminder 15th April and 18th April. Still no reply from Gas Safe Register.

After no reply and fully understanding that I have a duty of care for the tenant. I instructed a 3rd party company to do the remedial work on the 21st April 2023. This work was booked in on the 24th April and commenced 1st May.

On the 27th April I received a message from Gas Safe Register, where I expressed that this needed fixed urgent. I explained I had to book this in for the tenants well being. Finally on the 2nd May I received a message to say the inspector would be in touch. By which time the rectification had nearly been completed.

The inspector then acknowledged to me that he had not been chasing the installer, as he was under the impression that I did not want them back.

Nobody from the Gas Safe Register contacted me with respect to this.

Peter Whetton woefully inept and expensive

Peter Whetton. I would not recommend this plumber, he assured me that the radiators and the boiler size were the correct size for the large property I paid him to install. They were woefully miscalculated and at enormous expense I had to get them replaced to suit the size of the property. He also caused problems with my electrician and other workmen by being rather abusive about me which I found out later from them, after having paid him in full. I would not recommend this engineer, it was an expensive and unpleasant experience dealing with him.

Safety is not important to the gas safe register

I reported concerns about a boiler installation by a gas safe registered engineer on 8 March. Despite me making three follow up phone calls, I only found out 2 weeks later, while living in a house with an ‘at risk’ boiler that they couldn’t do anything about it as it’s just over 6 years since installation! It seems that the customer’s safety doesn’t matter after 6 years! The poor work was done at the time of installation. The fact that I’ve only found out is not my fault.

Although it took what seemed like an age for someone to book an appointment in, it was booked last Wednesday for today.

The gas safe Inspector, Cyrus however was amazing! He explained everything to me clearly on arrival and explained what had happened and what should have happened which led to the conclusion our boiler was no installed correctly and seemed unsafe.

The initial firm that installed it also attended and were quickly told what to do by Cyrus to rectify the issue. Within an hour, they were back and had fixed the issue which I believe would not have happened without the intervention of Cyrus! Thank you so much for your help!

Poor standards for public protectiom

Very poor company. I reported a gas safe engineer listed on their register because he had capped my gas unnecessarily, leaving me without heating and hot water for 2 weeks. The customer advisor refused to provide me with a report reference number nor his name. He also said, after consulting another staff member, that the engineer would not be suspended from appearing on the register, even after I had emailed them with the evidence, as requested. He said an investigation would be carried out but the engineer’s name would still remain on the register. My concern is that a vulnerable person may unwittingly enlist the services of this engineer. This company should really be required to abide by regulatory standards of operation. After all, this is about protecting people’s lives.

like a lot of qualified gas engineers i was registered with corgi for many years along with my plumbing city and guilds i had a city and guilds in gas installation, but the gas registration has turned out to be a snake oil racket, its run by capita who only run it because they put in the best bid ,they had no experience with gas of any kind but along with running multiple other good earners tv licensing collecting parking tickets to name a couple, well gas safe registration was like winning the lottery for them, gas registration should be non profit for the benefit of installers and consumers but like much in britain its just a great way to shake money out of people its a scam and the public dont realise

Used to make you pay for unnecessary work

My experience of gas safe is that most gas safe registered engineers use it as an excuse for charging for unnecessary work. We had a commercial kitchen which was working fine until the interlock failed. Engineer turned up with the usual "more than my jobs worth to touch that" because the ventilation didn't meet regulations. So I went to the office to find the invoice for the original installation. Guess whose signature was on the certificate? Yup same engineer. So when confronted with this he fixed the interlock. This is not the first time this has happened to me. Keep records handy for any work you have done and watch out for engineers using yellow notices to rip you off by having unnecessary work done.

NOT SAFE using GSR

Used GSR company to fit boiler in March 2020.
February 2021 broke down (snow /freezing temps), Worcester Bosch Engineer(terrific company) fixed fault & served Yellow At Risk Notice (Flue not sealed).Contacted GSR company as the GSR Company no longer gas safe registered(Did not renew soon after my job.)
After pleas for help from GSR , Mark Kennedy Inspector came & did Visual check & found 21 defects , 5 of those At Risk !!
Advised to get another GSR engineer to re commission boiler at my expense.
As GSR have NO POWERS the report passed to Health & Safety Executive (see bad ratings Trustpilot).
I am Still trying to get Resolution , even asked for help from local MP as no one will take action on Rogue Businesses. Case is on going. The chap that originally fitted boiler in 2020, found out later was an apprentice.
He now 2022 Has own company & registered GSR!!!

Waste of space

Don’t reply to emails, someone must read them and decide to ignore them! Phoning up is pointless too as you spend ages going through an automated service and then get put on hold and no one answers. The monthly magazine is useless it’s just a load of advertising for manufacturers. They think if they just list some regulations in it that counts as having informed engineers about changes. The virtual inspection is the biggest waste of time going! The website they give you to do it is a joke a child could have designed something better. I thought I was getting a video call with an inspector instead you get a load of ridiculous questions on a bad web page, just keep collecting the fee and do the bare minimum not interested in engineers

Greedy Register

I have been a qualified gas engineer for 15 years and have been registered all this time until this year. My circumstances changed where I was working abroad for a few months and I missed my renewal date by 3 months as was working for a company rather than myself. When I tried to renew 4 months later, I was told I would have to pay double the usual amount. A penalty apparently. Why penalise me you greedy people? All we get is a weak poor magazine once a month. There is no support for engineers, your whole phone line is automated and just robot voices, unable to get through on phone lines, they would rather be authoritarian and a greedy money making corporation, than supporting qualified engineers and making them better
