What is the point of having a ‘gas safe register’ to monitor qualified gas engineers and to protect the public from unsafe gas installations when they themselves need to be monitored. I called to report a non ‘gas safe’ unqualified person and the person on the phone was not phased asked me to write to them or email them. She did not ask for any specific details about the person or what steps I should take. I think the service is POOR! This is a shame for the honest people who pay so much money and HAVE to be on this register in order to make an honest living.
As a qualified Gas Engineer I have no choice but to pay my subscription to this organisation. In return you would expect help and advice on a PROFESSIONAL level. Three years ago I had to RIDDOR report one engineer for ten different jobs which were immediately dangerous. Gas safe were asked to investigate on behalf of the HSE. The Gas Safe inspector agreed with all my assessments of the work, however, they not only told the engineer that ir was me who had reported him but they just told him to 'put the work right' there was no way the customers wanted him anywhere near so had to pay to have the work rectified.
You would think that I'd learned my lesson with Gas Safe, but foolishly I rand them today as I have come across several LPG gas hoses that connect gas meters to static caravans that are failing either at the point of installation or within the first few months of use. I needed help to get these investigated and to notify via a safety bulletin should there be a wider issue.
So, what was Gas Safe Registers response when I pushed for them to help me...
They have decided that I need to be inspected !!
FFS just because I've pushed them into facing up to their responsibilities it seems they are now using bully boy tactics to shut me up.

Check out the BBC Watchdog program 14/11/2018 - Question - what is the point of GasSafe??????
They appear to have very little intention of protecting customers from incompetent gas fitters/engineers.
As customers, we have to use GasSafe certified gas engineers/fitters.
GasSafe do not and will not tell you about certified fitters/engineers who have bad work records, so if you end up employing a GasSafe certified tradesperson who has an undisclosed poor record of work and then does a bad job for you, you could pay with your life!
