I booked a rental car through Hotwire, rather last minute and didn’t see the name of the rental company until after I had already paid. That’s when I learned it was NU Car Rentals, a company I’d never heard of.
When I arrived at their office, it was complete chaos. Staff were aggressively pushing additional insurance on everyone, regardless of whether customers already had coverage through their credit card or their personal auto insurance. The older gentleman ahead of me was pressured into paying an extra $350 for insurance he likely didn’t need.
When it was my turn, I told them up front that I would not be purchasing unnecessary additional coverage. They responded by claiming it was required under Florida state law. I pushed back, explaining that I’ve rented cars in Florida many times from reputable companies and that this “state law” requirement was simply false.
At that point, they suggested I should rent from one of those other companies and claimed Hotwire wouldn’t charge me—also not true.
Advice: don’t book a rental car through Hotwire if you don’t know who the actual provider is, and stay far away from NU Car Rentals. It’s a con

⭐ 1 STAR – ABSOLUTE BAIT-AND-SWITCH SCAM. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
This was one of the most dishonest and infuriating rental car experiences I’ve ever had at their Orlando, Florida location.
We booked weeks in advance through Expedia with NU Car Rental in Orlando, received confirmation emails, and even got a “your rental is ready” notification the DAY OF arrival. We flew in from out of state assuming—reasonably—that our confirmed reservation would be honored.
It was not.
When we arrived, we were suddenly told our reservation had been “cancelled several days ago” and that an email had supposedly been sent. That is a complete lie. No such email existed. No notice. No warning. Nothing. We had proof of confirmation and same-day readiness emails.
To make matters worse, one employee actually checked me in successfully, proving the reservation was still active. Then, while a second person in our group (with a nearly identical reservation) was checking in, a manager abruptly stepped in and claimed the reservation was cancelled. Miraculously—IMMEDIATELY after that claim—a cancellation email appeared. The timing was beyond suspicious.
Then came the finger-pointing:
• NU says they’re just the “brand”
• They claim the actual operator is Action Car Rental
• Action says NU cancelled it
• Expedia gets blamed
• No one takes responsibility
The most alarming part?
The manager refused to provide his name, was a complete jerk, dismissive, and entirely unapologetic, behaving as if this kind of deception was normal business practice. No concern. No attempt to help. No accountability whatsoever. That alone tells you this is systemic, not accidental.
It is painfully obvious what happened: demand increased, our lower-priced reservations became inconvenient, and they cancelled them at the counter so they could re-rent the same cars at higher last-minute rates. That is predatory, unethical, and disgraceful.
Because of this:
• We were stranded out of state
• Forced into a last-minute scramble
• Paid significantly more elsewhere
• Lost hours of our trip
• Dealt with rude, unprofessional management who clearly didn’t care
This company cannot be trusted. A confirmed reservation with NU means absolutely nothing. If you’re traveling for vacation, business, or with family, do NOT risk it.
I strongly recommend:
• Avoiding NU Car Rental entirely
• Avoiding Action Car Rental
• Booking with a real company that honors reservations
• Filing complaints with Expedia, the Florida Attorney General, and consumer protection agencies
This wasn’t a mistake.
This wasn’t a misunderstanding.
This was a deliberate bait-and-switch.

I strongly advise against renting a vehicle from NU rental car company in Orlando. Despite reserving and prepaying online, they claimed we had cancelled, and after providing proof to the contrary, they fabricated additional excuses, failing to take responsibility or offer assistance. Our experience was further marred by arriving early, only to be informed that no cars were available for my family, resulting in over three hours of distress at the airport searching for alternative arrangements, unfortunately, without success.

Please avoid Nu Car Rental at the Orlando Airport location. My experience was extremely disappointing and felt misleading.
I booked a car one day in advance through Expedia. After a long wait at the airport terminal (since Nu Car is off-airport), I finally reached their counter. The staff was unfriendly and immediately told me that my booking was canceled.
I showed my Expedia booking confirmation number, but the representative insisted it was canceled and even showed me his computer screen. I then contacted Expedia directly. Although Expedia’s support is AI-based, they reconfirmed my reservation and assured me that my booking was active and not canceled. They even resent the confirmation.
Despite this, the Nu Car representative continued to insist that my booking was canceled and pressured me to rebook directly with them at a much higher price. This behavior strongly suggests a practice of forcing customers to cancel third-party bookings to avoid paying commission and charge higher walk-in rates.
As a result, I was left without a car and now have to fight with Expedia for a refund.
Be very careful when booking with Nu Car Orlando Airport. This experience felt dishonest and unprofessional.

Worst experience i have ever had with a car rental company, forced to take double insurance as booked through expedia, contract in Spanish no English version, car not safe or road worthy condition the wipers did not work when it started raining we had to have them fixed in country colombia at our cost they would not reimbursement to us, booked a premium vehicle skodia and received a kia they claim same class paid 80 us per day plus 15 us for insurance absolutely ripped us off, expedia did refund there insurance but zero on car not being premium. After dropped off waited for inspection car signed off perfect got screen shot from there staff 2 days later try send me expenses for vehicle hub cap and fuel usage.
We had signed documents saying all was perfect on delivery.
Run a mile there is many good car hire companies these people are not one.
Never again expedia or Nu car rentals absolutely terrible !!!!!

Worst experience with a car rental service I've ever had, 0 stars. It took an hour and a half for the shuttle to get to the airport when the estimated time was 15-30 minutes. When I tried to call the service and check in, I was put on hold multiple times and then they hung up. Would NOT recommend.

We had a terrible experience with NU Car Rental at Orlando (MCO).
We booked and fully paid through Priceline, including insurance. Our flight landed around 10 PM, and we waited over 1 hour at the airport for the NU rental shuttle. The shuttle never showed up.
After multiple attempts, we finally called NU Car Rental headquarters, only to be told that the location was CLOSED. There was no prior notice, no email, no warning during booking that they would not be operating late at night.
We were left stranded at the airport with a 10-month-old baby, late at night, with no rental car and no support. This was extremely stressful, unsafe, and unacceptable.
If NU Car Rental cannot support late arrivals at a major international airport like Orlando, they should clearly disclose their hours and not allow bookings for late flights.
I strongly do NOT recommend NU Car Rental, especially for families or late-night arrivals.
Editing after NU response.
If you accept airport reservations for 10:30 PM, your location should remain open to honor that booking. Closing at 10:00 PM makes you ineligible to provide airport car rental services.
I have proof that you accepted my reservation for 10.30pm. Then why are you accepting the reservations in first thing.. so proved that you are fake companies trying to scam people.

This company comments on negative reviews like they "care" the truth is they are going to scam you. I was scammed for 3 times the agreed upon amount. Falsifying documents is their forte.

Most deceptive and manipulating ever. 3 1/2 hrs of lies etc. and you don't speak to a live person and sign on a blank pad. They charged one of my cards so many times it shut down for fraud!!! Forged my signature on closing documents... In all my years of renting vehicles have never seen anything like this. They should have federal charges against them

We are frquent renters from the SLC Nu Car Rentals agency for the main reasons others should rent a car here rather than any other rental car agency in Utah:
1. GREAT PRICES
2. CLEAN NEW CARS
3. AMAZING STAFF
4. SUPER FREQUENT SHUTTLE
Additionally, I must point out something new I noticed. This location is always clean and tidy looking. Has been since we started renting here a couple of years ago.
BUT in our most recent rental visist, I was so surprised and PLEASED to discover the lobby of NU Car Rental is decorated in beautiful holiday decor. It was SO NICE to arrive there during the holidays and find that this Nu Car location doesn't just rent great cars, they take the time to create a beautiful, festive environment for the customers. They didn't have to do this, and frankly, in my travels, most rental car agencies don't do anything to create a warm, friendly environment. I don't even recall thIS location doing this in the past. New owner? New management? Whatever changed, thank you Nu Car Rentals for your SLC location, and the joy it is to rent here. What a beautiful surprise. This alone makes me love you more and will keep us coming back for sure!
5 stars, A+!!!

The worst. Complete scam artists. Try every upcharge possible. Charge for fuel not used. Try to force insurance. Say adding a driver is only 10$...thats per day not 10$. Then dont fasten the cables on the battery so you almost die when the car shuts off...

This place is a major scam. I booked through a third party and even paid for insurance. When we got there the guy at the desk tried to charge me an additional $274 on Colorado taxes then I asked for a print out and a copy of charges and he was saying the charges are just “taxes and stuff”

I rented a car online. It was not clear the company was not at the airport. You wait for a shuttle to the office, 15 minutes away. We arrived at this practically abandoned building. There are no onsite employees. You Zoom call an employee who insists you purchase insurance. He was also very rude. "You didn't have to book with us". I canceled my reservation on the spot. Took the shuttle back to the airport and used Avis for less money and was not required to get insurance. Never again.

Haha.... I going to Google Reviews for NU car rentals company and they have a rating of "1.7". What a joke. I'm not the type to leave reviews. However, I had to leave this review because it's absolutely ridiculous. They use a third party economy bookings to get clients, and I was one of them. So, i went online and booked a car rental and they took my money.Give me a confirmation number. And then when I got there, they denied me because I didn't have a credit card that was valid. They told me they couldn't help me and to call another number. Then, that number told me to call economy bookings. So I did that, and I couldn't get a hold of anyone, so today the next day, I called them economy bookings, and couldn't get a hold of them.So I called back in you rental cars, and the lady was a complete b**** on the phone. Horrible customer service, horrible company, nice office. But a complete joke. We'll see what happens to them in the future. It's not looking bright. With that type of customer service, I don't know how they have any customers at all.

Very disappointed in the 'fine print'. Lucky for me I was able to figure out why their rental was so cheap. If I would have traveled 'unlimited miles' and travelled into New Mexico as planned, they would have charged me .50 cents per mile extra for my entire trip. This 'unlimited miles' but local (specific states only allowed) restrictions tactic should be considered a fraudulent practice.

This was unequivocally the worst car rental experience I have ever encountered. I have consistently used Hotwire.com for years, and until today, I had always received reliable service. However, this time, my experience was utterly unacceptable, and I want to emphasize that I do not hold Hotwire.com responsible for the incompetence of NU Car Rental. Earlier today, I reserved a car through Hotwire.com for 5 days at an astonishing rate of around $5 a day. While many might be surprised by such a deal, my long history with Hotwire led me to have high expectations, especially regarding pricing. I opted out of the insurance offered during the booking process, planning to purchase coverage from the rental company if necessary, given that I have full coverage on my personal insurance and my credit card covers damages up to $50K. I was attempting to rent a Toyota Corolla; thus, I felt more than secure regarding potential damages.
After completing my online payment, I found out that NU Car Rental was my assigned company. Despite specifically requesting to pickup the car at the Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL), I discovered that NU Car Rental is actually located offsite, about 2-3 miles away. Before heading over, I called them to confirm my reservation and pickup details, and I was assured everything was in order.
I arrived at NU Car Rental 15 minutes early, and was happy to find that I was the sole customer at the front desk. Unfortunately, I was greeted with a negative demeanor from the staff. Upon presenting my confirmation number, I was informed I needed to provide a credit card for a $500 hold. This requirement was bizarre; I’ve never encountered such a steep hold in my years of renting cars. However, I complied and provided my Florida driver's license and credit card. When I inquired about the policy for out-of-state drivers, I learned the hold would drop to $250 for those individuals, which raised further questions in my mind. The agent then asked what insurance I would like to add. I stated that I did not want NU’s insurance, as I have comprehensive coverage through Geico. To my shock, the agent flatly stated that NU would not accept my insurance and that acquiring one of their insurance options was mandatory to rent the car. I was stunned and demanded a clear explanation, but none was provided. To add insult to injury, I was told I **must** purchase a toll pass from them, despite having my own Florida toll pass. The options presented were extortionate: $60 per day for unlimited toll use or $25 per toll. I firmly declined, reiterating that I did not need their pass, yet the agent insisted that I had no choice but to accept one of their offers. Moreover, I was outraged to learn that I was also limited to 100 miles per day—a constraint I have never faced with any rental car in South Florida or anywhere else for that matter.
Ultimately, I chose to decline the entire reservation. I retrieved my credit card and driver’s license and made it clear I would not proceed with the transaction. I left NU Car Rental about 30 minutes after the scheduled pickup time for the car, and immediately called Hotwire.com. I was informed that NU Car Rental would not issue any refund based on my reservation type. This was absolutely outrageous! They are essentially telling customers that anyone who faces these unreasonable fees at NU Car Rental, loses their payment made through booking platforms like Hotwire, Booking, Hooper, Cheapair, and others.
While leaving, I observed other frustrated customers arriving with the same grievances. This company is a sham, and I hope that the relevant authorities take action. They are nothing short of thieves, and their practices need to be exposed.

Avoid at all costs. All rentals at Phoenix are offsite. However once you take the train to where normal rentals are, there’s another shuttle you must take. Service was terrible. The place smelled. There were three agents “helping” people and when it was my turn, there were two. This was the Monday before Thanksgiving. It took about an hour for me to get in and out. Lastly, you are so frustrated and tired and try to do the right thing such as add insurance. The four day rental (all inclusive) went from around $125 to just under $300. After inquiring later, I was told it was because of the fees for adding insurance. BAIT AND SWITCH and should be illegal.
