in house bidding

Would not be bad if the Auction House did not bid against the clients.... there needs to be regulation of these types of sales, taking it up with my MP. The internet has brought much manipulation and fraud to the Auction industry.

Stay away it s rubbish

would give 0 stars. It s horrible auction. I paid 30£ for an airfryer. They listed the product very nicely in a box witch seemed to be sealed but was not. What is found inside the box was a broken airfryer and full of cooking oil and some rust with moulds. They charged me 30£ for delivery and I called them 25 times to arrange delivery. Stay away from them as they sell absolutely rubbish. There are much much better auctions around. Shame of this company. They could sell some returns or second hand but not in this kind of condition.

Your review raises an important point that all bidders need to be aware of. All of our sales are conducted on a ‘Sold as Seen’ basis and the onus is on the purchaser to inspect the pieces they would like to buy.

The important sale information states:
Buyer Beware- all lots in this sale are ‘sold as seen’ with any imperfections, faults or losses. No warranties are given. Bidders are deemed to be satisfied with the condition of any lots on which they bid.

Throughout our sales, the auctioneers remind buyers of the T&C’s and encourage them to view in person beforehand.

The reasons for return could be any of the following: failed delivered, the wrong item delivered, damaged or broken item, damaged or broken packaging, missing parts, incomplete set, the wrong item ordered. This can include faulty electrical items that require repair or refurbishing by a qualified professional. Should you wish to follow up your complaint please email info@peacockauction.co.uk

I have had numerous positive experiences buying and selling with Peacocks over the years. Recently, I sold some items at their newly refurbished St Neots location, which looks fantastic. The process of selling was seamless and I received payment promptly. I highly recommend Peacocks for buying and selling.

Peacock's Saturday sale.

Peacock's Saturday sale is a good place to find second hand item for sale. Especially for students and people setting up their first home.

Generally only care about profit. Rampant theft.

Generally only care about
Profit. Staff are poor, theft as a seller is rampant. Mostly faulty goods, many items such as coffee machines come from product returns. Items are available for limited testing which never fully tell if the item is working. Buyers beware is a way of getting out of refunds. Staff often lie or miscatalogue items on purpose to increase sales. It’s a shame.

WHPeacock are an excellent auction house

I’m astonished that so many buyers do not understand how auctions work. I’ve dealt with WH Peacock for decades and they have always been straight and fair. My recent experience has been no different, a collection of classic cars that didn’t make me a millionaire but made a fair price without the hassle of dealing with buyers individually or advertising, it was all done for me. Some times the porters are under pressure and may not be as happy and smiley as a retail salesman but that’s what saves you money. As for buying it’s a big place, some things cannot be checked or warranted, that’s why you pay less than retail price. WH Peacock are a straight and honest business and I’ll always recommend them for a minimal hassle sale or purchase.

As explained to you personally via telephone and email, on a number of previous reviews and outlined very clearly on our website and saleroom signage, all lots in the auction are sold 'as seen' and without warranty. With over 5000 lots per week being sold through our various salerooms it is not possible to individually check every item pre-sale. We offer viewing opportunities for all our auctions, with provision available to thoroughly test all goods on offer for sale. Buyers choosing to bid without having taken advantage of these viewing opportunities are taking a calculated risk that we do not advise. Many regular customers know this, choose to bid anyway and accept that they will occasionally be disappointed. Others are careful to check every prospective purchase as we suggest - indeed at this very moment our salerooms have at least 300 people browsing, many of whom are doing just that!

Be Afraid, be very afraid!!

A solicitor chose Peacock for a house clearance of a relatives estate despite the 80% negative feedback on them. Subsequently after trusting the lawyer to have made a sensible decision we are faced with the following:
1) The single most expensive piece of furniture in the decedents house was bought 30 years ago for 800 pounds, had stood in the same place all that time, was inspected in February and was in perfect condition. Feedback after the house was cleared by Peacock was that the piece was so badly damaged it had to be destroyed!! Photographic evidence has been requested but has not been provided.
2) Many other items that were placed "In Auction" were sold for less than the minumum they accept, but you get charged even if it doesn't sell and they get the margin. So they list it for X, someone buys it for 2 pounds and they charge you six and pocket 4. This isn't much but when the tactic is applied to multiple small items, it builds up rapidly. (So they pocket the max cash while you suffer in grief). This makes it super easy for them to pick all the stuff that will not sell well, or has little value because it jacks up their cash intake through the minimum fee being charged when the item sells for less than minimum. This is patently dishonest.
3) After their visit to clear the house, (which took place over two days, costs incurred were two sets of mileage fees etc, etc, etc. and required two trips maybe because they didn't have a big enough truck?) we found that in the kitchen of the house about 10 square feet of ceiling board were down from the kitchen ceiling. We were there in February and it was nowhere near even possible that this damage was caused by other than Peacock's operatives. No response yet on the damage they caused.

It is my fervent belief this is a very bad company run by crooked people. There was no report provided on how they damaged the ceiling or how they damaged the furniture, it was just left off the final report they send.

Steer clear of these people. My honest belief is that the supposed damaged cabinet that they had to destroy, was recognized for having value and was shipped to another auction house for sale so they could maximise their profit, they then attempted to not report it and brush it under the mat and hope we would not notice.

I would neither use these people or recommend them to anyone based on this experience.

DESPITE EVERYTHING ELSE DESCRIBED STILL NO CONTACT FROM THEM AND I KNOW WHY. THEY WILL NEVER ADMIT LIABILITY FOR ANYTHING AND WILL JUST RESORT TO "IT'S YOUR WORD AGAINST OURS" MY NEXT MOVE WILL BE TO PASTE SOME COPIES OF THEIR INVOICES IN HERE SO EVERYONE CAN SEE WHAT THEY CHARGE AND INDEED OVERCHARGE.

Dear Mr Payne, I apologise you haven't had a response to your very serious complaint and allegations. I have passed on your review to our Managing Director to resolve.

Having investigated this matter, we are surprised at your complaint. Our instructions for this clearance were entirely dealt with by the executors of the estate and we have had no prior dealing with yourself.

We have discussed the complaint in depth with the solicitors (fully regulated by the SRA) who are entirely satisfied with the service we provided.

When we discovered the damage at the property, we emailed photographs which clearly showed that we could not have caused the damage ourselves (it would appear to be an ongoing leak exacerbated by rubble under the floorboards).

Following the clearance and sale, the final deficit was actually less than we had quoted to the solicitors before starting the work.

Bearing all that in mind, we do not believe that this complaint is justified.

I’ve been buying and selling at WH…

I’ve been buying and selling at WH Peacocks for nearly 40 years. Family run business, great people to deal with. One has to remember it’s an auction and not a retail shop! Everything sold as seen and commissions are clearly explained. Most of the negative reviews are from buyers who didn’t do their due diligence. So only have themselves to blame.

Becareful when buying from W&H peacock

Becareful when buying from W&H peacock, I recently had a parcel go missing that was then relisted for sale online by a new seller, when I asked the seller they told me they had bought it via these auctioneers & when requesting help from the W&H they was quick to disregard the situation.

Our postage and packaging department will have provided you with a quotation for packaging and delivery of the items you purchased based upon the size and weight of the goods. With larger goods we are constrained by the restrictions of our delivery provider and we would agree that there are more cost effective means of arranging collection. It was entirely your choice whether to utilise our service or arrange your own courier.

We are sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with our postage quotation. Having looked at your purchase invoice however, it is obvious that 'just putting the items in a box' would have resulted in the goods being damaged during transit. We operate a professional packaging service - it simply isn't plausible to box items up and hope for the best. Customers are more than welcome to arrange their own courier and we routinely assist in such scenarios, but we do not offer free packaging to those customers choosing to make their own arrangements.

With regard to our auction fees, describing them as 'robbery' is clearly inaccurate; we want to ensure our customers are fully aware of Buyer's Premium and VAT, and online bidders are clearly presented with all charges multiple times before committing to bid.

Misleading descriptions and hide behind "as is"

As others have found, the items are often broken and only fit for scrap rather than what they are sold as. I accept that the goods are sold "as is" but the photos are often taken from angles to hide damage and deliberately mislead. I will never buy anything electrical of mechanical from them as its almost guaranteed not to work, so worthless beyond scrap value.

Update: Interesting when I complained directly they promised to contact me and never did. Only a negative Trustpilot review got a response allbeit over 3 months later

Thank you for your review, which we hope will serve as a reminder to customers of the importance of thoroughly inspecting good before bidding. We offer 11 hours of pre-sale viewing every week specifically for this purpose and many of our customers enjoy attending our saleroom in person to browse the auction before bidding. Our weekly sales regularly include electrical goods from a variety of sources ranging from sealed goods to returned items. Any buyer choosing not to avail themselves of the opportunity to view is obviously taking something of a risk, however regular customers who buy online and pay attention to the ample warnings provided before bidding will know that your accusation about deliberately misleading potential buyers through deceptive photography is completely false.

Scammers & Thief - Please consider all these Negative review before even thinking on bidding on their auctions.

wish there is an option to give No reviews at all. i should have trust on all these negative reviews here, they are bunch of scammers sitting in big place, they will make sure they just give you all faulty and damaged item with none are working, have attended many auctions but they are scammers, thiefs, sitting to just steal money and in return you just get box full of rubbish.
for e.g. they will tell you "abc item packed in box" but actually when you will open the box it will be just rubbish. REMEMBER they will never put anything in auction which will be working probably selling those items on some other platforms and alll rubish here on their auction!!

Appears untrustworthy

I put in a bid on 2 items and apparently "lost" the next day I see the items up for sale in their next auction. This looks like a very unscrupulous practice. If the final bid is too low what appears to be a fake bid goes in and the item goes onto the next sale. I would understand if there was a reserve price that was not met, then the item should appear to be unsold, reserve not met. Not sure if I would trust again, however they have blocked me because of my review, so they have removed any chance to prove me wrong.

How disappointing that you have chosen this way to communicate, when a simple conversation with one of our staff would have explained how auctions work.

Some lots do have reserves from the vendors when entered into sales, a reserve price prohibits us from selling below a given price.

We routinely sell similar items on a weekly basis; we represent a number of large retail outlets and companies who send us similar product lines.

Our system shows that in fact you were outbid on the lots you attempted to purchase.

Peacocks for a Day Out

Well as probably the longest and consistent customer of WHPeacock as I was a visitor to the shed opposite the old police station in 1955. Much has changed and I must say the new "warm" premises are a pleasure to visit. Yes I have been on the receiving end of a few bum purchases but that's what is known as caveat emptor ie buyer beware. Great Cafe and nice ladies, what's not to like ?

To clarify for others who might read this review, our buying charges break down as follows:

17.5% +VAT Buyer's Premium charged on every lot.

Items entered for sale by VAT registered vendors also attract VAT on the hammer price at the standard rate (currently 20%).

All charges are clearly indicated on our website, online bidding platforms, stationery and saleroom signage.

We would also respectfully ask that you refrain from making comments about the appearance of our staff and consider editing your review accordingly.

Avoid In-house Shipping Service

They shipped my antique clock by ParcelForce without any FRAGILE marking on the parcel, and of course, it has arrived smashed to pieces. Curiously enough, they did use some FRAGILE tape inside, though! I had asked them to remove the pendulum before packing, but going through the wreckage, I can see that they couldn't even do that. Best avoided unless you are buying something indestructible.

Thank you for your review. Your comments were noted at the time and it is fair to say that when we initially setup our postage and packaging service at short notice during the pandemic we had a number of training and operational issues. We have thankfully eradicated the vast majority of these and our postage and packing service now operates to a thoroughly excellent standard.

Buyer BEWARE

Buyer BEWARE. They advertise items online take the picture nice and hiding the fault in the picture. You buy online. You pay the price plus the online fee for not comming 5 times to the action site and inspect and see and blah blah blah and then when you collect the item it falls apart in your hand missing parts/screws. Then they tell you is YOUR responsibility to check the item that is COMPLETE and that the item works and that is in one piece even if they clearly put the item together to take the picture to fool you. Not the first time when this happened.
