Avoid Split the Bills Like the Plague

Avoid Split the Bills Like the Plague – It’s Not Worth the Risk

Based on the reviews it doesn't go wrong often... But when it does my god it goes wrong.

At first, Split the Bills sounded like a great idea. What could go wrong, right? A simple way to manage shared bills, and a little extra peace of mind if a flatmate suddenly drops out of uni and leaves us footing more than our share. Seemed worth the extra £15 a week for the “convenience” and “security.”

Fast forward one month in I get a bill from British Gas. Odd, sure, but things get weirder. The bill isn’t addressed to the house, or “The Tenants of (address)” as you'd expect. No, it’s addressed to me. Just me. Full legal name, front and centre. A solo headliner on a £190 energy bill.

(Which Is a huge legal issue as I never consented to a contract being made under my sole name?? And after actually reading the T&C's it says they can do it WITH CLEAR NOTIFICATION, which of course I did not receive. Let's say for example I never got the letter signifying I had a bill, but split the bills didn't pay the bill. That means it's a roulette wheel behind the scenes of which of the 3-4 of you could be racking up debt because the company you paid to pay your bills didn't and all under your name. The excuse they gave was well I signed the group contract first therefore they just slapped my name on the account. It has to be comedy, because that WOULD not hold up in court. )

Red flags? Oh, absolutely. But I gave Split the Bills the benefit of the doubt. I called them, and they said something like, “Yeah, that’s normal, first bill comes in the post. Then after that the bills come to us so you won't see them again.” Fair enough. I figured as long as they were paying it, no harm done.

Month 2: The second bill arrives. Still just my name on it. This time it’s £380. I contact Split the Bills again. Daniel from customer support replies with a vague “Oops, yeah, that’s our bad. Something went wrong.” Okay… still no payment proof, but I gave them another chance.

Month 3: The third bill shows up like clockwork now a hefty £540. Again, in my name. But this time, it comes with a bonus: a lovely threat from British Gas saying debt collectors will be sent if payment isn’t made by a certain date. Brilliant.

At this point, it’s clear: the bill isn’t being split. It isn’t even being paid. And because it’s in my name alone, British Gas doesn’t care that there are four tenants in the house. As far as they’re concerned, it’s my debt. My name. My problem. My credit score on the chopping block during exam season, all thanks to a company whose literal job is to pay the bills.

Their customer support? Absolutely useless. Every phone call is like a bad improv show — no one has authority, no one seems to know what the contract says, and no one can give you a straight answer.

Even after four months of chasing them down, the best they could give me was a half-hearted “Well, we swear we paid it,” with zero evidence sent despite promising to provide it.

The icing on the cake? I paid around £15 a week for a whole year for this service. That’s hundreds of pounds for a company that literally didn’t do the one job I paid them for.

So please, take this as a serious warning. Negotiate your utility contracts directly. If a flatmate drops out, you can still sort out shared payments yourselves and at least you’ll know who’s responsible.

Because when Split the Bills mess up, they don’t just mess up, they mess YOU up. And if you’re unlucky like me, that mess could come with legal threats and a potentially ruined credit score before you’ve even finished your second year at uni.

And too this very day I have received no proof of payment. British gas have no idea what's going on, split the bills have no idea what's going on. And I have zero clue what is going on. No compensation. No checkups. I'm still debating a lawyer or the very least the energy ombudsman. Because this is so many levels of business incompetence it gets humourous. When all. They had to do. Was split a damn bill.

I have my entire correspondence with split the bills and even paper copies of my bills just in case British gas come for my soul in the near future.

----UPDATE------------------------
After publishing this review, I was promptly contacted by Matt, the Customer Operations Manager, who addressed my issue within 48 hours. Although compensation wasn’t initially offered, it was accepted based on my circumstances after I requested it.

It’s clear the company has good intentions, but until key contractual issues and gaps in the customer service process are addressed, I still can’t fully recommend Split the Bills. That said, once I was in touch with the right person, the steps taken to resolve the situation were excellent.

I just hope that if something goes wrong for you, you’re able to reach someone as helpful as I eventually did.

Great Help from Gemma!

Had some really great help from Gemma. She walked me through the process simply but not condescending. Really love Split the Bills, always making it easy to sort situations rather than calling a million different companies.

Updated review

Updated review:
Our case ended up getting picked up by the operations manager Matthew Cowen. He was very helpful and was able to send us a 5G router in the meantime while our BT box was being sent to us. We also received reimbursement/ compensation which we are very grateful for.
We did only receive the BT wifi a month after we signed up for split the bills even though we did this in advance of moving into our place (possibly an issue with OpenReach?). So if your building doesn’t have virgin media and you’re willing to wait a month for your wifi go with split the bill.
Hopefully any customer service issues me and my flatmate (and any other people that have also written bad reviews about STB) experienced are being reviewed and discussed.
That being said, our bills are cheaper than with any other company we have looked at so if you are looking for a cheap bills company to go through I would use these guys! just a shame about all the bad stuff in the beginning.
Thank you again to Matthew :)

Not worth the stress.

I can't give 0 stars, so 1 will have to be it. This company has, to me and my housemates, been awful. Absoloute shambles honestly.
We have spoken to multiple different advisors who ALL tell you different things. We were expecting broadband and told a date it would be installed, then we were told it wasn't coming in. Been an absoloute nightmare since.
I'm not sure why, but we had told split the bills we hadn't paid for the month of June, even though they told us "it was on their system as paid". All of June we heard nothing regarding a payment, until they tried to take a June & July payment in the space of 24hrs apart from each other.
It's honestly quite laughable because it has now been a month and there is still no sign of a broadband provider even accepting Splitthebills' request for broadband for our place, let alone an installation date.
This company prides itself on being stress free. There is nothing stress free about what we are going through.
They charm you with their super friendly customer service, tell you everything you want to hear on the first call, tell you their names & that you can win a competition for writing a good review.
DO NOT BE FOOLED! Please note everything these people say.

Good with all the bills, easy to set-up but network miscommunications

All the bills so far have been sorted out brilliantly, it was extremely easy to set everything up and took no time whatsoever. However, we have had a problem with the Wi-Fi, after calling Split the Bills and speaking to Rowan, it turns out the Wi-Fi was not ordered (which they had believed it was), so we have therefore, been without Wi-Fi and connection for over 2 weeks.
