Upskilled Review
I Achieved the Certificate IV within the stated 18 month timeframe. I was able to continue to work full-time and felt 18 months was a reasonable expectation for completion.
Overall, the learnings gained from the course were quite useful in a real world context. The project assessments were engaging as they provided simulated problems to solve, I feel this mimicked the workplace effectively. However, there are several improvements that should be made around the user experience, the course content flow and the submission/marking stage.
Whilst the trainers were helpful in most cases, student support would check in on how you are progressing, and both were quite responsive when I needed help, when it came to the marking of assessments, they were sometimes marked as not competent for trivial reasons. One example of this was being marked not competent for not providing a cover sheet when the actual content of the assessment was satisfactory and there was no mention of a cover sheet in the assessment requirements.
Course difficulty is somewhat demanding and would be quite difficult if the student was entirely new to the industry. Timelines set out by the calendar are quite short, being about 4 weeks. Course content + assessment typically would take 6 weeks thus causing unneeded pressure (particularly for anxious students)
Course content is really hit and miss, some courses (like Database course) are written quite well, but most have blatant errors in spelling/grammar (one being written in a completely different language) or section titles not matching the actual content in the section. Upskilled does keep up to date with new and emerging technologies and I personally found the cloud and programming courses key to keep a step ahead in the industry.
Knowledge Quizzes were initially fine to submit, but was changed about half way in the course to a really subpar method of submission. I'm not sure on the user experience for trainers, but for students it's incredibly clunky to use (like not being able to format text, to use bullet points and the text overflowing outside the submission area). I think it would be easier if students could download the quiz to do in Google Docs/Microsoft Word and upload the result back for marking.
Project/Portfolio Tasks and Assessment were helpful to actually understanding the content and definately assists in actual work in the industry. I was able to apply the learnings straight away in the workplace
Whilst the course is ranked at a Certificate 4 level, I did feel some of the assessments were incredibly difficult, an example is the development of a mobile application whereby building the actual application end-to-end seemed more of a University level assessment, especially with the given resources/course content. I feel like this is where the LinkedIn Learning and Pluralsight fell short which bridging some of the course content to application of knowledge and would confuse students more

Review - Cert IV in Information Technology (Programming)
I learned useful skills and knowledge during the course. However, presentation of learning material left a lot to be desired. Much of it was poorly written and poorly organised, and/or simply copied and pasted from other places on the internet.
Progress through the course was frustrating at times; after completing units, I sometimes had to wait very long times (eg. over a month) to be given access to subsequent units.
Some assessment tasks (especially in the first half of the course) were very frustrating because the instructions were extremely unclear, leaving me to guess at what was required. The trainers typically did not provide a great deal of extra clarity when asked. I was sometimes asked to revise and re-submit assessments for what seemed like very trivial reasons.
The sheer number of video roleplays that were required was also frustrating. I would not have objected to doing between 6-8 role plays, but there were probably more than a dozen and this seemed excessive. It is logistically difficult to organise so many role plays for an online / remote-learning course.
Overall, the second half of the course (which was more technical in nature) was a lot more useful and satisfying than the first half, which was very tedious.
To an extent, I was misled by the course consultant who spoke to me prior to enrolment. He said that the course could be completed as quickly as I wanted, which turned out partly incorrect because of the long wait times between unit availability. He also said that the course would cover JavaScript, which it did not. (It covered Python, C#, SQL and one unit on mobile [Android] development).
Overall, it was a suitable course in my circumstances, because I was able to complete it entirely from home during the COVID pandemic lockdowns, and I am a self-motivated learner who is able to do my own research. If you are somebody who requires much more personal support in your learning or want to interact with physical human beings, I do not think this kind of course would be suitable.
Upskilled's support staff were friendly, responsive and helpful, when you speak to them on the phone or via email. However, there is often only so much that they can do -- particularly regarding the actual course content -- and often they can only direct you back to the course trainers, who I found considerably more difficult to communicate with.

Very supportive staff
Very supportive staff, great courses which are Nationally recognized and courses that are able to be completed on line or in person. I found all the staff who assisted me when selecting a course to be helpful, friendly and supportive. I can highly recommend attending a Upskilled course.

Harder than I was led to believe
At times I wondered why I took this on. It was a lot of work and a time stress. It took much longer to do than indicated in initial discussions with the first contact person. I felt he was more concerned with getting funding than honestly evaluating if this course would be suitable for my needs. Once into it I was often frustrated at how long it took to actually view all the course material plus do the assignments. As a dad of two little girls the time pressure was immense. I also found that support questions sometimes took quite a while to be answered if at all. There were some assignments in which I could wait no longer for a reply due to deadlines and just had to wing in and guess what was required. What was really helpful however was the support team's willingness to allow extensions and this was definitely the saving grace. This took the pressure off and was much appreciated.
