It got worse. The mobile was found to be ready after all, but when I got home and opened the box, someone had slung in the wrong kind of charger. I give up. The contract is getting cancelled. Who takes all that money and sets up a contract then supplies the wrong items? Well, it happens, but the level of argument from the team recommended by the response below is off the scale. No, they couldn't look up the details of the phone and simply send me a proper charger. It's a poor outlook in the event of more issues.

Everything happened quickly after Vodafone responded (below). Whereas the customer services adviser had said I couldn't collect the phone until tomorrow, suddenly a message came - it was ready after all. Having seen the laconic attitude in the Braintree store twice this week, I'd guess they simply couldn't be bothered to arrange collection today. Not until they got chased following my TP comments.

I'm waiting for a new phone which was promised for today. No text has arrived, and clearly, it isn't ready to collect. A call to customer services got me an email address and I sent a message, to which no one has responded from the shop in Braintree. Then a demand to fill in a survey arrived. The customer service assistant then called me, to urge me to fill it in. I explained, I had deleted it since the process was not complete, and she made me feel guilty. I suggested she might resubmit it but she was dismayed and said she could not. This isn't my fault. All I want is the proper service, which I was promised on Wednesday.

Manager has a major attitude problem
The manager (I think) at the Braintree store has a major attitude problem and spoke down to me on both visits. I asked him if he had a problem with me and rather than diffusing the situation decided to argue back and tell me that I ignored him on my first visit when he said hello - so clearly he did have a problem with me! He was actually busy serving when I first visited and is full of it. I've always found Vodafone an excellent company but I might have to take my money elsewhere as I can't get over how unprofessional, rude and generally difficult the staff at this store have been. I had ordered a phone to collect at the store but he refused to do the simplest of things to help me, like look for the order status online - just as his colleague had done the day before - clearly it could be done, he was just trying to be difficult and refused!
