I do not recommend ASDA travel money card

I do not recommend this travel money card at all. I am very disappointed with the staff, the card, and the service. I came to get this card and specifically asked the employee about using it in Indonesia. Looking me straight in the eyes, she gave me incorrect information, pretending as if she had personally used the card in Indonesia and was completely satisfied. It seemed like the only goal was to sell this card. The problems started when Asda money began charging huge fees from the card. While I was shopping in the store, Then I wanted to transfer money to another card, but it would not allow me to do it properly. The verification code to my phone number often never arrived. In the end, it turned out that there was also a very high fee when transferring money to another card. It is impossible to contact customer service by email — there is absolutely no response. And if you stop using the card for some time, they will still continue charging money I completely do not recommend this card. There are much better options without such enormous fees.

I had a very disappointing experience…

I had a very disappointing experience with Asda Travel Money.

I went in to sell some unused US dollars and buy euros, which should have been a straightforward transaction. However, the staff member serving me was extremely slow — it took around 25 minutes just to process, mainly due to how long it took him to count the cash. The whole experience felt unprofessional and inefficient.

Because of the delay and frustration, I didn’t even realise he had failed to return my driving licence. Two weeks later, I found out it had been sent via Royal Mail to DVLA instead of being returned directly to me. This could easily have resulted in my licence being destroyed, forcing me to pay for a replacement.

To make matters worse, I discovered this just two days before going on holiday. Not having my driving licence meant I couldn’t hire a car, which significantly affected my trip and cost me additional money.

I’ve used Asda Travel Money before and had much better service, but this experience — particularly with the staff member (initials Jay MRRN) — was far below standard. Poor attention to detail and lack of care had real consequences for me.

Awful asda norwich buero

Claudio in the asda norwich money bureau was rude and not following procedure. I was asked to sign to say I had received the money I bought online before even seeing the money. He checked my id and then asked me to sign. When I questioned why I was signing when he hadn't even counted out the money he said that's how it works here and if I don't sign he wouldn't serve me. After I signed he sloppily counted out the money and shoved the notes without an envelope in the tray. Claudio refused to give me the complaint email telling me to Google it wjich i did and initially someone from asda norwich said Claudio followed the correct procedure. I fed this back to travelex who upheld my complaint and confirmed this is not correct and staff needed training.

Much better alternatives available

I have been stuck in my ways using a prepaid travel card for too long. The exchange rates are poor. The app is pretty useless. You can’t update your phone number on the app so I couldn’t get a verification code when trying to pay for something online. When I had a new card issued after losing the previous one, the PIN must have been updated. I didn’t realise this, and the app wouldn’t display the new PIN, so couldn’t use the card to pay for things until the app eventually decided it would tell me the PIN. When I checked my balance this morning, around £150 worth of currency had mysteriously vanished, presumably funds being held after I bought petrol yesterday, but there is zero indication of this and so I don’t know much I actually have remaining.

I hear a lot of banks now let you use your card abroad fee free and at a favourable exchange rate. On recent trips I’ve been using Trading212’s virtual card, where exchange rates are near-perfect and you get cashback on spending. I’m vowing to never use Asda travel money in future!

Fantastic service at Asda Travel

Fantastic service at Asda Travel

James and Lynn at the travel desk in Asda near Lakeside in Doncaster are always professional, friendly, and welcoming. They make you feel special and nothing is ever too much trouble.

A great service every time — highly recommended.

Pending funds problem

Be wary, and have a back up.My preloaded travel card worked fine for a couple of days, but spent on a Sunday and my remaining around £100 was locked, while purchases were "pending" meaning I couldn't use the balance on the last day of my trip when I would have been buying gifts for friends and family.

Terrible experience - wish I could give no stars.

Bought currency and I was given out of circulation notes. Took them back and was refused a refund. They stated I had no proof I bought them there. I do understand what they were saying but disappointed in the service and attitude.
Purchased from them a few times before but never again.

We opened 2 travel cards in good faith…

We opened 2 travel cards in good faith following an in depth discussion with the booth occupant at the Asda store.
We travelled to New Zealand with some trepidation as the cards had been declined on several occasions when booking online. We were reassured locally but the service via telephone was dreadful and at time dismissive verging on offensive.
The cards were frequently declined in new Zealand. Some retailers even acknowledged the cards as a regular issue, some were able to take some payments using methods they had developed.
Please do not use these cards. Embarrassing and stressful.

Asda Canterbury and their ‘part time’ approach to delivery

Very limited opening hours given it’s located in an Asda store open 7 days a week almost all day. To suggest someone would travel 30 minutes plus to go to Broadstairs from Canterbury for the pleasure of exchanging money is a joke. If you can’t open even during the working week and can’t open at least a couple of evenings either close it down completely or sack the person in charge and find someone who can manage the operation to suit clients needs.

App not compatible with phone

Applied for an Asda travel card this summer for holiday in Canada. Accepted in most places except on metro & airport in Montreal, but managed to use credit card which I took as back up. Unfortunately the app has now been upgraded and not compatible with my phone so will be cancelling & going somewhere else in future.

Awful service

Awful service , closed for over 2 hours when I went down this afternoon ( little clock saying nipped out back at 5.45 ) went back at 7.50 2 members of staff there refused to serve me saying they were cashing up ( audit apparently) I explained I’d already driven down on afternoon . I stated opening times were 9am -8pm , they just ignored me . I asked who I complain to they said customer services , I spoke to customer services apparently nothing to do with them . Asda travel money only let you complain in writing which I intend to do . Awful service will never use again . Gold standard my A.. e

Asda pre paid card ....avoid

Went to New York and had a lot of money on this Asda pre paid card, it worked the first day then declined everyday afterwards, restaurants, subway just everything. Luckily I had a credit card so used that throughout the trip. Tried ringing the number, press 3 to speak to someone...sorry this number is not recognised, please try again!
Came home and had all the money transferred back to my current account, asked if they knew why it kept declining, wouldn't or couldn't answer, said that I can't trust this card now so wont be using it again. Is that all I can help you with today madam...they couldn't care less.

Never open

I have been 3 times in the last 4 days to try and get currency. Always on a break and back in an hour. Each visit I made to store were at different times of the day. I went again today for the 4th time and they were just heading for a break and couldn't pop back in the kiosk as it would take 5 to 10 minutes to set it all back up which would delay their break. 💰 💵
