Shopped around and did as much research as possible before deciding to use Optegra. At that point I had not met Mr Shortt, and was quite prepared to walk away and continue my search.
The meeting went very well, Alex was friendly and professional,with a good sense of humour that carried over to the operation, he answered all my questions about the procedure and pre-empted some questions that I would have had later.
The procedure itself went as described,Alex and the other staff worked like a well oiled machine, anyone with a military background would have especially impressed with the checklist procedure before the actual lens placement!
Optegra themselves deserve a mention for the facilities and overall ambience provided, plus the fact that you aren't being operated on in a shopping precinct.
Two weeks on and everything as it should be, still doing the drops but vision so much better, I still find myself going to remove my glasses after reading the paper or using the computer! Haloing was noticable but not too intrusive and has now largely gone.
I highly recommend both the firm and especially Mr Shortt.

If you are after a surgeon who tells you clearly all that is involved in the operation, is friendly and approachable and makes you feel confident then Mr. Short is your man.

What Mr Alex Shortt has done for my eyesight is nothing short of miraculous. Following surgery it is virtually back to how it was in my youth.....!!

I had resigned myself to a continuing age related deterioration of my eyesight, relying on reading and distance glasses almost totally. This was impacting me in all aspects of my life (I am fairly active and I desperately wanted to be glasses free). Following Alex's analysis of the extensive test results and his examination, he recommended Refractive Lens Exchange. For me this was a big deal (as it would be for anyone!). Alex spent a great deal of time explaining the whole process in a thoroughly professional and considerate way and I was totally reassured. With Alex there was no hard sell, he gave me a detailed non technical explanation of the facts and what he recommended to be the best course of action for me as an individual. This all followed up by letter for me to consider the detail in my own time with no oblilgation to continue. I felt to be in very capable and experienced hands and I signed up for surgery at the earliest opportunity!

The day of surgery was equally stress free with everything fully explained throughout in an empathetic way by Alex and his team. The surgery was pain free and relatively quick.

It is hard for me to put into words the impact of the refractive lens exchange surgery carried out by Alex. The term "life changing" is a term often used in this type of circumstance, for me however, I would without question rate it as "life giving" ................... as for me, it has literally done just that. I feel like the clock has been turned back !

I quickly gained TOTAL confidence in Alex as my Consultant Surgeon, his track record and CV is impressive and he is a thoroughly nice man.

Alex Shortt is indeed an excellent surgeon and person he met with me calmed my nerves and apprehensions of someone digging in my eyeball to remove my cataract and guaranteed me I would feel no pain which was 100% correct all through the 10+ minute surgery he talked me through it and within an hour plus I was on my way home went to see him 3 days later got excellent news I was healing very well, got the all clear and could go back to Nigeria. I have just had lens replacement surgery by Mr Alex Shortt at Optegra Guildford, on both my eyes, which were around -10 - very shortsighted! Its amazing, took about one and a half hours from beginning to end, and my vision is perfect now. I can read, drive, watch TV - all without glasses, for the first time in 50 years!! The whole process was extremely professional, with careful checks, and explanations as to what I needed to consider. It was also painless, something I was quite anxious about, the worst bit was the bright light shining in my eyes, but I guess it was important Mr Shortt could see what he was doing! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him - in fact I have already!

I now have perfect distance and near vision thanks to cataract extraction and multifocal lens implant in both eyes by Alex Shortt. Although I haven't yet gone ahead with the procedure I still plan to as I found the staff there to be very thorough, professional, open and honest.

Mr Shortt was very patient and kind with me while i had a little bit of a freak out directly begore surgery. He quickly put me at ease and reassured me that nothing would be done until i was 100% ok with it. I cannot recommend Mr Shortt and his team highly enough, patient, caring and very professional.

From my intital consultation through to my Lens Exchange surgery and after care, the service I received from Mr Alex Shortt and his team was exceptional.

I have worn glasses and lens for 40 years, that my life really has totally changed. I forget and look for my glasses out of force of habit and really cant believe I won't ever need them again.

I experienced no pain whatsoever and eye drops are expained very well. As long as you set timers and remember them, you will also experience no pain. I can now see my watch at night, see the shampoo and conditioner labels in the shower and see to put my make up on :-)

Needless to say, I am very happy with my new bionic eyes.

I had laser eye surgery 2 weeks ago after a couple of months of research and consultations with 3 different providers.
I went with Optegra as I liked the fact they were an eye hospital and specialised in different treatments to do with the eye.
I met Dr Alex Shortt on the day of my consultation and immediately felt at ease, I read the testimonial of his background, and felt that he had plenty of experience, especially having worked 14 years in moorfields! I’m glad I choose Alex as everything went great and I now have better than 20/20 vision!

ALEX J SHORTT is the best surgeon. I had the best experience from beginning to last. I was scared at first but I had a talk with him of how the process is going to be and it made me calm. The whole process was less than 5mins with no pain and no discomfort at all. I would recommend this surgeon. He is such an amazing person and well experience. After the laser surgery I was able to see immediately and the healing process for me was less than a week. I now don't wear glasses at all. I my vision is clear than before. My life is complete now and am happy with the result.

I had smile laser eye surgery in late September performed by Mr Alex Shortt. Alex was extremely reassuring when I first met him, discussing the procedure, likely results and risks. He did not try to sell a particular type of surgery instead setting out the pros and cons of each. On the day I was made to feel relaxed and the operation was over in 10-15 minutes. It was almost instantly noticeable that I could focus on distant objects, although there was some irritation in the first few hours which were alleviated with drops and this disappeared within 24 hours. My vision was light sensitive and a bit foggy on and off for a day or two, but this also largely disappeared within a few days. A month on the vision has settled extremely well and any dry eye has broadly gone. I am delighted with the results and not having to wear contact lenses any more and would wholeheartedly recommend Mr Alex J Shortt.

I was interested in ICL surgery after becoming fed up of wearing glasses, and also because I wasn’t eligible for laser surgery due to previously being treated for Keratoconus. I booked a consultation and was initially impressed with how thorough the optometry team were at Optegra in their central London clinic. This is where I also met consultant surgeon Alex Shortt who discussed the procedure with me. I previously had doubts about undergoing the treatment as it didn’t seem a very common procedure, however Alex came across as confident and experienced when explaining this type of surgery and reassured me of the success it brings.

I decided to go ahead with the treatment and underwent the surgery in June. The procedure did feel a bit uncomfortable but Alex kept me reassured throughout and all was done in less than an hour. My only slight criticism was that I was left alone in some discomfort for quite some time after the surgery, Alex eventually saw me again and applied some anesthetic to ease the pain. I was then free to leave and didn’t experience too much discomfort in the coming days.

My sight quickly improved within the next few days and it was a welcome relief to get up out of bed in the mornings without my glasses! I did have some concerns during the recovery as my vision was sometimes distorted, however I think this could have been due to the transitioning and maybe me forgetting to put my eye drops in!

It’s been over three months since I had the surgery and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. My sight is excellent and it’s great to enjoy life without the hassle of glasses.
