FALSE SAVINGS ILLUSTRATIONS - BEWARE

I filled in all my details and pressed 'Compare' and was told I would save £ 180 per year.
When I checked the actual tariff rates (p/kWh) I found that the proposed deal had a HIGHER tariff rate than the one I was on. Their calculation assumed that, after the end of my fixed deal, I would then spend the following 8 months on the default rate, but this is hardly a realistic baseline. This was not mentioned AT ALL on the page with the headline figure. Make sure you read the small print or you could end up changing to a worse deal.
EDIT: With reference to the response from The Big Deal below, I find it hard to believe that they are 'required' by the regulator to publish a higher priced offer as a 'saving'. All the more reason to check the small print carefully.
EDIT2: Thanks for the link. I note, however that Uswitch, for example, can comply with the licence requirements, while also alerting customers that their comparisons allow for the evergreen period, and that actual costs may rise from current levels after switching, which strikes me as a more honest representation of the facts. I still think you can do better.

Reply from The Big Deal

Thanks for getting in touch.

We're required to do our comparison's that way by the industry regulator Ofgem. It's the way all major energy switching sites operate, based over 12 months and assuming anyone will move onto a supplier's standard deal if their fixed rate ends during that period.

We always provide the unit rates and standing charges on our FAQs and on our switching pages. If you've got any other issues please do not hesitate to contact us via our support page (https://support.thebigdeal.com/)

I hope this helps,

Ed

Further to your response, saying you can't believe that it's required, I can definitely tell you it is. I've dug out the relevant requirements for you, I hope that helps. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you've got any questions about it.

As you can see here in the confidence code of practice for price comparison websites under Requirement seven clause E (pg.12) states:

"Where a Service Provider provides a comparison for a time period, the estimated
costs of all tariffs (including a consumer’s current tariff) must be calculated as a
default using the methodology based on the definition of Estimated Annual Costs in
Standard Licence Condition 1. "

Standard Licence Condition 1 with the definition for "Estimated Annual Cost" can be found on p19 of the Electricity Supply Standard License Conditions. This states the formula that must be used for calculated the Estimated Supply Costs saying that "In the case of a [fixed term contract] with fewer than 365 days remaining from the date of calculation" then we should calculate using the cheapest evergreen tariff rates as well.

Ofgem's confidence code can be found here: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/sites/default/files/docs/2015/03/confidence_code_-_code_of_practice_0.pdf

The electricity supply license conditions can found here: https://epr.ofgem.gov.uk//Content/Documents/Electricity%20Supply%20Standard%20Licence%20Conditions%20Consolidated%20-%20Current%20Version.pdf

The Big deal savings

The big deal has now provided me with an energy saving deal for the second time. The second one with iSupply has been particularly competitive with a price lock for 2 years at a time when all the other suppliers have increased their prices.

Very good deal

Why go to the big 6? when all they do is raise their prices at the first opportunity and never reduce them when fuel goes down.
I found the Big Deal very helpful and they gave me a very good fixed price deal.

Highly recommended.

After many years of procrastination and a misguided sense of loyalty to my previous energy supplier, The Big Deal finally convinced me to change suppliers and made it very easy to do so. I recommend using their services if you want to save money. I am now almost at the end of my first year with Good Energy, and am wondering if The Big Deal have a new, even cheaper offer to share with me?

Money Saver.

Overall, we've saved money by switching to Big Deal deals. A minor hiccup at the end of last year when GB Energy stopped trading, but the matter was swiftly resolved at no extra expense to us via another switch. We will continue to use Big Deal later this year.
