I booked a hire car through Auto Europe for collection from Viaggiare at Catania Airport, Sicily back in August 2025. Despite having already purchased full insurance through the broker, Viaggiare refused to release the vehicle unless we paid for additional coverage. Although my husband objected, the representative was insistent. Only one of us was allowed into the collection point, preventing us from discussing the situation properly, and the language barrier was clearly exploited.
We were coerced into paying €128.52 for additional insurance we didn’t need. I contacted Auto Europe immediately, and they confirmed our policy was fully sufficient. I was assured they would follow up with Viaggiare but could only do so after the rental ended. I followed up with an email, copying Viaggiare.
After returning to the UK, Auto Europe informed me they would not intervene in the complaint and that I should deal directly with Viaggiare. I’ve since exchanged multiple emails with Viaggiare, clearly demonstrating that we complied fully with their terms and conditions. Yet their responses have been minimal and each one inconsistent, and after two months, they still have not done the right thing.
The lack of accountability and customer care from both companies has left a lasting negative impression and I won't touch either company again. I am left with no option but to leave this review and pursue a formal claim via the European Consumer Centre.

Tips for other travellers:
- Check your policy thoroughly and do not agree to pay anything additional until you’ve spoken with your broker (if you have one).
- Keep all rental agreements easily accessible on collecting the vehicle.
- Inspect the car carefully before driving away. Ours was filthy, and several areas of damage were missing from the pick-up ticket, making it difficult to spot defects.

I am writing about my experience with the branch in Krakow. Absolutely unwilling staff. When I asked if I wanted to speak English, Polish, .. they looked at me as if I wanted to go there at all. That would be the least. Without saying a word, he almost just made copies of the documents, signed, keys and showed me where the car was. So I left, I waited for another car, he returned, so angry that I couldn't see that I had this car. And he left. No inspection of the damage. Here I became more aware. I took photos of the damage and that I wanted to see where they were recorded. So he pointed to the back of the paper with his finger, again without saying a word. The damage was there, so I left. I returned the car without contacting them, I only received a confirmation of the return of the car from the broker. So I waited for the deposit to be released, but it didn't arrive even after 15 working days. So I called to see if everything was okay. absolutely no answer, so I dealt with the situation as a complaint. so the first time they told me that I had damaged the car. I was shocked because of course nothing happened. so began a 4-month journey to one stupid document that they were unable to provide me. Definitely take full advantage of them as I had. Because at first, the one of those recorded damages on the roof was not one but three, it would not have been noticed if someone had not pointed it out to you and especially if the car is not completely clean. that means that the lessor had 3 dents there and there was only 1 in the papers. so for this they withdrew the entire deposit amount of 760 euros. cosmetic defect. the complaint went through the insurance but they needed to provide documents. I only got the document about handing over the car after a month and a half. of course, also with damage. however, the insurance company needs a table based on which it calculated the amount. Well, believe it or not, I only got to it after 4 months. The Krakow branch wrote me back for the first time in September that they had a lot going on over the summer, so I'm only writing now. I handed over the car on 24/6/25. The deposit was successfully credited to my account today, but seriously, be very careful with this Krakow branch. The car was fine so it doesn't sound like I'm just complaining, but record everything and keep it until you have the deposit, and it's mandatory to have a car with this company. Be careful. I've been renting cars for many years, but this has never happened to me.

Minibus transfer from airport arrivals takes 10-15mins. Please note that during winter hours their office closes at 2000, but they're happy to wait till 2100 if you contact them in advance

Pressured to buy extra cover - although we had already purchased this via booking.com
Booked through Booking.com, paid extra for damage insurance. Yet, upon arrival, we were pressured to pay another £300+ for insurance we already had.
The staff were rude, dismissive, and careless. We spotted unmarked damage on the car, called them, and were told “don’t worry" ?
Their attitude ruined our peace of mind throughout the trip.
Customer service? Nonexistent. They seriously need training.
Worst experience I’ve had in Europe.
Pros:
Cars are close to the airport.
Vehicles worked fine but were handed over dirty.
Simone (or Simonie) was the only decent human there—kind and helpful during return.
