Beautifully traditional small hotel. Just what you would want. Charming staff, discreet and welcoming. The room was lovely. Proper personal coffee service at breakfast, no horrible coffee machine!!

A gem

Charming and quiet
Charming and quiet! Clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. The location is ideal!
Comfortable and Intimate Hotel
Hotel Portoghesi is a very comfortable establishment with an attentive and professional staff. The hotel itself is located in a vibrant and exciting neighborhood. I will definitely stay at your hotel next time I'm in Rome.
Old Shabby Room
The people are wonderful, but the hotel is not keeping up. It needs to invest in updating the rooms. Unfortunately, our "suite," room 20, was poorly furnished, very dark with only one small alcove window in one room. The "double bed" was really only two old, thin twin mattresses pressed together, matresses that are too small for the frames beneath which stick out. There were no desks for work, just a lucite tall stand bolted to the wall that was too tall for the chairs in the room, and a mirrored vanity table that was too small for the chairs. The pull out sofa is old with too-small cushions that don't cover the entire back. No tables were provided around the sofa at all. The very small safe can't accommodate a DSLR camera and is fastened to a removable shelf. There is no bathroom fan, just an opened small window high on the wall by the ceiling. I knew there were no refrigerators in the rooms, but the sheer shabbiness and darkness of the room took me by surprise. Overall, this made the experience very unpleasant.
Consider other alternatives
The hotel is tired and there is a smell of mold, with artificial air fresheners throughout attempting to mask the smell. The cold breakfast was meager and highlighted white sandwich bread - below typical Italian standards. The location is fabulous though. Bathrooms had visible mold in showers.
Very nice hotel, great location, old fashioned charm
I had a lovely stay at Hotel Portoghesi! The location is excellent, the premises are very clean and accommodating, and rooms are charming and nicely appointed in an old-fashioned way (which is what I was looking for!). The breakfast was plentiful, and the staff throughout the hotel was friendly and helpful.
My only suggestion would be to start breakfast at 7am instead of 7:30am for those who need to leave for an early train or flight.
Well situated but disappointing
The hotel is very well situated. Reception staff are helpful and friendly. The roof terrace is delightful.
But: The room smelt damp and musty, the bed is hard, the pillows hard and the bedding is old. The shower too small and not very hot. The breakfast is disappointing. The roof terrace is under utilised.
The Hotel Portoghesi could be wonderful. It needs a refurbishment, a better breakfast offering, and bar on the rooftop in the evenings.

We love staying at the Hotel Portoghesi! I would only take one point off due to the room needing new carpet and wall paper. Otherwise, everything is wonderful. The staff is friendly and helpful and we love the breakfast.
The room was clean and quiet
The room was clean and quiet. The front desk team were always helpful and polite. The breakfast was excellent and the breakfast room is beautiful. The location is excellent. It is just a few minutes to the pantheon and outstanding coffee. We would stay again.

Hotel Portoghesi is in the perfect location to walk to the major Rome attractions. The staff was friendly, the room was clean and the breakfast was phenomenal, and amenities were basic. It's been rated as a 3 star hotel, but based on location, staff, cleanliness, and breakfast, I would rate it as 5 star.

A perfect location close to Piazza Navona and other great piazzas. Very walkable to major tourist attractions. We stayed for 5 nights. All staff, from front desk to the beautiful breakfast room with a view, were wonderful and welcoming.
The breakfast was perfect for a busy day ahead. Very clean rooms. Taxi stand is nearby therefore it always showed up within minutes when the clerk at the front desk requested a taxi. The church next door is beautiful! Make sure to visit if the doors are open. We would definitely stay here again!
Very well located hotel
Very well located hotel, very friendly staff, decent breakfast in a very nice rooftop. Room was a junior suite: good for 2 adults with enough place to move around. Mattress was ok.

Excellent experience
We booked “La Torre” room with the private terrace and it was an amazing experience; the hotel is beautifully appointed and in a great central location. Service was friendly, warm and prompt. Thanks for an overall excellent experience- we highly recommend Hotel Portoghesi.

Great value and super location for touring Rome. We stayed here six years ago and the AC was not working well, but this time it was great. The people are very friendly and very helpful - the rooms super clean. It’s not a “luxury” hotel - but as a clean home base for touring - this hotel is great.
Great hotel
Staff were responsive and courteous. Great location. Rooftop breakfast was very picturesque
