I went to see the band The Big Push at the 02 Victoria Wharehouse in Manchester. The Band was excellent but the venue was horrible. It has a capacity of 3,500 which isn’t particularly large but because of the layout and the pillars at least a 1000 of the audience can’t even see the stage and had to watch the band on tiny black and white monitors. As result when the band came on there were massive surges as the audience at the back pushed to see. Loads of people tried to push through to the front even though there was no room. I was near the front and got lifted of the ground twice because of people pushing behind me. Two fights broke out next to me because of people pushing in. The security at front was useless - there was a serious lack of staff and what there was did nothing to address the crush and violence that was happening. I have never felt so unsafe at a venue. At some point there will be a serious crush incident, with people killed or seriously injured. They need to put in proper screens so that the audience in the back can still experience the gig. Then there would be be this dangerous surging.
