Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 35 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were highly dissatisfied with product quality, frequently describing the fish as grey, mushy, or slimy, often not resembling actual fish and having an awful taste. Customers consistently reported products were disgusting, rancid, or even tasting like chemicals, and felt packaging was misleading, containing less fish than advertised. Additionally, people frequently encountered issues with texture, describing batter as soggy or rubbery, and the overall product consistency as unpleasant. Some also questioned if products labeled as scampi were actually scampi, often finding a grey congealed mess inside instead.

Poor quality

I have recently eaten two different Youngs products and both were very poor . First, a 'Chip shop ' fish fillet which had an unpleasant metallic taste and grey appearance and which turned out to be Alaskan pollock.
Next, a so-called gastro meal described as a 'cod , spinach, cheese and potato gratin'. This consisted of several layers of sliced potatoes, a few pea sized pieces of cod, some very small unidentifiable green fragments which I took to be the spinach ( although they looked more a sprinkling of parsley) and a tiny amount of cheese which when cooked went nowhere near to producing the gratin effect that the dish was supposed to create.

A picture on the front of the packet shows a modest layer of potato with a browned cheese covering which sits on a much thicker layer of fish. pieces of dark green spinach can be seen in the sauce.
I accept that the great majority of food packaging is designed to give a flattering impression of what products look like, but this picture is miles away from accurately representing what's inside. I used to think that Youngs produced quality seafood and fish products but now I won't be buying any more.

Fish have lost 2 fingers

I was very unhappy that you reduced your fish fingers packet from 10 to 8 fish fingers, I have been able to to eat this with my son since he was very little, this tradition with my son was broken this lunch time when I noticed only 8 fish fingers in packet, he is a 6ft, 13 stone 15 year old now, and built like his old man, I get no fish fingers sandwich today, he was sitting at the table waiting for me, used to be a 50/50 split when he was little, a growing boy needs his nourishment and his portion grew as he did, this made me happy remembering back to when I was a boy. Also better start telling youngsters fish only got 8 fingers now, no more counting to 10....Its a crying shame, times are moving in this direction.

Very disappointed

Very disappointed with the Taste of Asia - lime, chiii & ginger. The coating was too thick and hard, couldn’t taste any ginger and the spice was unidentifiable - just tasted like a lot of pepper. Like other reviewers I also didn’t like the taste or texture of the fish. In future will stick to the trusted lemon and black pepper varieties.

Better the devil you know!

I love and always have lemon and herb gastro basa fillets..
Very disappointed after trying a new ' limited edition ' (thank goodness!). Taste of Asia Korean inspired chilli, lime and ginger breaded fish fillets..
It's not the spices and flavour that's the problem... It's the FISH ! Yuk ..🙁. Horrible texture, and very fishy... I mean very... Not keen on Alaska Pollock anyway, prefer basa and cod.. I've had the lemon and pepper which is also Pollock, but didn't really notice it was..
Definitely won't be buying this one again!

Shrunk and awful taste

Just ate some youngs crab sticks. For the first time in ages. Never again. They have shrunk them to the widths of pencils. And taste awful. What are these companies doing. Will not be buying these ever again.

Thought I'd try the scampi, wish I'd not.

Thought I'd try the scampi! I knew something was wrong after the first bite, something tasted fishy no pun intended. I proceeded to open each piece with my fork and was shocked to see tiny flat grey gelatinous bits of ??? Absolutely disgusting and I'll be writing to complain. Please avoid this utter garbage at all costs.

This is not fish , it’s grey slimy sludge

Would have given no stars if possible. Every negative comment already written about the Gastro haddock in batter is true. This grey, gelatinous, slimy sludge calling itself fish is inedible. No idea what the batter Is made from ! Probably best not to know.
Wish I’d read these reviews before buying, definitely wouldn’t have risked it if I’d known who had bought them out. AVOID unless you are feeding this to someone you hate. I’ve written to complain and request a refund .. let’s see how they reply. Cannot believe they are still in business.
Youngs , if you can’t make edible snd tasty fish dishes, and advertise them with truthful imagery, please stop tricking customers and close your fish business down .
I did hear back from Youngs after several weeks. I had asked for my money back. But instead of a refund they have sent me… a Youngs voucher! I had explained in my original email I won’t eat their food ever again, so I rang to ask for my money back not one of their vouchers. Apparently they can’t refund in cash !!!! But offered another voucher I can use at Iceland, tried to fob me off with a voucher of less value than I paid for their dreadful fish.
Watch this space , I’ll let you know what happens next!…..

Youngs, do you think we’re stupid?

I think they’ve forgotten to update the photograph on their packaging. What used to be a very pleasant chunk of cod, in a thick and tasty sauce, now appears to be a tiny sliver of fish of unknown provenance. As around 90% of the product by weight is a watery, unpalatable emulsion I think they should perhaps rename it when they next repackage. Perhaps “Bag of flavoured milky water with credit card of mystery fish” might be nearer the mark. I wouldn’t even serve this to my dog.

Definitely not impressed

Cod in butter sauce worst fish I have ever tasted. Tasteless . Fish was unpleasant and almost tough. Their fish pie was horrible.contained only one tiny piece of cod and the sauce was sickly .
Definitely a lesson to be learned there

Truly horrible breaded cod fillets

Truly horrible breaded cod fillets - grey sludge nasty tasting filling. At risk at sounding like one of Woody Allen’s Jewish ladies - the food is terrible, and such small portions! - I was shocked at the shrinkflation aspect. Tiny! We threw the remaining 2 away as we were totally unconvinced they were even cod. They were surely reconstituted from scraps. Will never buy Youngs again

Bought Young's "Cod" in butter sauce…

Bought Young's "Cod" in butter sauce and was so shocked at the lack of fish content I measured it: The cod piece measured 1cm depth by 7.5cm length x 6.5cm width which is discussing for an adult meal, just about enough for a small child. Never again.

Cod in parsley sauce 4 pack was so bad

Cod in parsley sauce 4 pack was so bad, threw 2 away,I hate food waste but it was worse than bland and meagre on the fish content, it actually made the rest of the food (roasted med veg) taste bad, usually one of our fav meals though usually have it with a different fish product, thought try something different - what a mistake
