We had our first visit today with Dr Thomson and what a great experience ! Dr Thomson was incredibly caring and attentive during our visit. He took the time to carefully listen to all the details and made sure nothing was missed. He took my daughter’s symptoms very seriously and considered for a thorough investigation. We left with a clear and thoughtful plan of care, and I felt confident about the next steps. I’m very grateful for his kindness and professionalism. I recommend Dr Mike Thomson to all worried parents out there .

Prof Thomson has worked miracles on our daughter

We were recommended to Prof Thomson by my daughter's Neurologist and I was skeptical about Gastroenterologists following being let down by not only one at our local hospital which started privately but also by the NHS in one of the well respected London hospitals. We were treated appallingly, 'told off' and dismissed when our 6 year old daughter was suffering beyond belief and then left to it with no help at all. Prof Thomson listened and understood the my daughter's struggles and took this onboard for her treatment program. After months of Enemas and medications that caused chronic stomach pains and overflow incontinence 24/7 under her previous consultant, after meeting Prof Thomson, he prescribed a medication that not only could my daughter stomach but that was small volumes she could manage and there were no more invasive procedures. He referred her to an amazing Psychologist who he works with and within 2 and a half months she has taken huge steps on the road to recovery and back to her old self after 14 months of a living hell. We are internally grateful to Prof Thomson and all of his team and I would highly recommend him.

Brilliant. Thanks. Just to point out that we didn’t prescribe or give the enemas for months. That was before we met and I only rarely use them. I am so happy that she is in a good place now and I completely agree that Cleo our psychologist specialising in this area is a genius and marvellous with all ages of children.
Best wishes

Sharp, Efficient, and Reliable

Dr Thomson is a doctor of few words but sharp clinical judgment. He avoids unnecessary investigations for children and relies on his extensive experience when prescribing treatment. He successfully resolved our child’s abdominal pain, which had persisted for five months. His assessment of paediatric conditions is highly experienced and trustworthy.

It has taken me some time to write this…

It has taken me some time to write this review, but after careful reflection I feel it’s important to share my experience so other prospective parents can make an informed decision. After receiving several glowing recommendations—and feeling deeply let down by the NHS—I travelled to London with my son to see Professor Mike Thomson in March 2025. I went in with very high hopes.

Unfortunately, the consultation left me feeling pressured and uncomfortable. The professor’s approach felt more like an interrogation, as though I had done something wrong, rather than a supportive attempt to understand and help my son. I appreciate that many families come through his clinic, but what I experienced was a noticeable lack of empathy.

I was told there was nothing wrong with my son and that we would be handed back to our local teams. More than six months later, my son is still struggling, we continue to feel unsupported, and his situation has only worsened.

I’m not sure why it took me so long to share my honest experience—perhaps because, at the time, surrounded by so many positive reviews, I felt like the odd one out. But I left that appointment feeling utterly deflated and deeply disappointed, and I believe it’s important to voice that.

I’m so sorry to hear that. If you would like to contact us and we can review things together maybe we can find a way of helping you navigate the health service and your son’s issues. I pride myself on my empathy and finding solutions to difficult situations that families find themselves in. If I have not helped on this occasion I would like to find out why with you and to try to help you and your son. If you contact my PA team we will endeavour to see you in the next week and of course this would not incur any charge to you. Best wishes. Prof Thomson

Chronic constipation help

After struggling to get the help we needed for my little boy who has struggled with constipation for several years we decided to see Dr Thomson. I felt very reassured seeing someone who understood the condition and was able to reassure me that the medication he was taking wouldn’t cause long time problems. It was great to have an xray done and be sure his condition is under control. I only wish I had been to see Dr Thomson sooner.

Great experience with Prof Thomson

After years of getting nowhere with NHS GPs for my 9 year old daughter for chronic constipation and soiling I decided to utilise my private health care and see Professor Thomson who was recommended on various groups of parents with children with constipation issues. After just a couple of visits my daughter is so much better and the soiling is now under control which has made life so much easier. Prof Thomsons is extremely kind and calm with my daughter and I felt well looked after by him and the whole team at the Portland including his PA team who are lovely to liaise with. Thank you!

Exceptional Care from a Truly Outstanding Paediatric Gastroenterology Specialist -

My 7-year-old son was referred to Professor Thomson from Ireland for a specialised procedure, and I can confidently say we were in excellent hands. From our very first consultation, Prof. Thomson was open, clear, and honest in his communication, which immediately put us at ease.

He is an exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable paediatric gastroenterologist, clearly at the top of his field. Beyond his technical expertise, what stood out most was his kindness and empathy—especially towards my son. He took the time to explain everything with care and was always attentive and compassionate throughout the process.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Prof. Thomson to any parent seeking expert care for their child’s gastrointestinal health. His professionalism, empathy, and surgical talent make him someone I deeply respect and admire.

Mike was amazing! My son was losing a considerable amount of weight and Mike Thomson investigated, orchestrated further investigation rapidly, diagnosed and acted on this all within 2 weeks. My boy is now eating well and happy. It has been life changing for us. Mike was kind, patient and clear throughout. I couldn’t give him a higher recommendation.

Excellent experience with Dr Thomson

We are enormously grateful to Dr Thomson for fitting us in at short notice and diagnosing our son quickly who was in huge discomfort.
He got us the help and treatment we urgently needed when the NHS let us down.
We found him to be professional, kind and an expert in his field. Our experience with Dr Thomson and the Portland was overwhelmingly positive.

Expert in his field

After struggling to get support from the NHS I utilised my private health to diagnose and treat my teenage daughter’s nausea. Within a few minutes of being examined by Professor Thomson he accurately diagnosed the issue. This diagnosis was then confirmed at an ultrasound appointment. The condition has now been resolved quickly and effectively with medication.

I was extremely impressed by all the employees we encountered at the Portland hospital from Reception to nurses. We were seen quickly and treated in a caring and kind manner.

Highly recommend Professor Thomson.

11-month wait on the NHS resolved in “11 minutes” (approx)

My 6-year old son’s juvenile polyp was removed quickly, professionally and without fuss after waiting 11 months on the NHS. Fortunately I had previously taken out insurance and the process was smooth.

Professor Thomson was friendly, concise, and professional - and I must also commend doctors in the Queen Elizabeth hospital, Glasgow for sharing all necessary records to make the process smoother.

The Portland Street hospital is busy and I fully appreciate that Professor Thomson has to manage his time between procedure and pastoral care, and, I am aware that this can come across as rushed to some. My opinion was that he gave all the time necessary to answer key questions, including in later follow up, but also has to consider his busy schedule as an in-demand, preeminent surgeon in his field. The process is simple and streamlined. Expectations of patients/parents perhaps should be realistic in this regard, even if self-paying.

My relief at having the matter resolved was palpable. And I am thankful that Professor Thomson could perform the procedure at short notice before Christmas. On this note, I would recommend parents take out private insurance to cover any such future eventualities as having this option made all the difference. Without it we would still be waiting on the NHS as they simply didn’t have capacity.

A big thanks to the whole team at Portland Street!

Dear Fraser,

great to hear everything went well for you both. Very helpful comments as well - I try to give everyone as much time as they need and my feedback suggests that I do that. As you note it's a busy practice! Anyway all noted and really a big thank you for your honest comments and I am so glad we were able to help after a week or two. Sorry you had to wait so long in Glasgow - they are a great Unit up there in the Chlidren's Hospital I have to say though.

Thank you for helping our family

Our son spent years dealing with tummy pain and nausea, with our NHS GP blaming it on wind and constipation. Prof Thomson investigated thoroughly and got to the bottom of the issue. He's now on the right medication. Poor boy used to be miserable all the time. Now completely transformed. He is healthier, happier and more confident. Thank you Prof Thomson and also a big thank you to the secretaries for always being so responsive and helpful.

Absolutely first rate with a lovely approach to our 4 years…

With a lovely approach to our 4 years old that placed her extremely at ease and a very friendly, concise and helpful/informative approach for us (as parents), Professor Thomson quickly highlighted, via using some very precise questions and an examination, the likely cause of regular bleeding (having been told it was just constipation by our GP which did not concur with our experiece), and provided an immediate plan.

He proposed a date within a very short timeline (which was excellent) and the operation confirmed his diagnosis. She has not had any issues since.

Overall, sterling, caring and extremely child friendly service from a consummate professional: absolutely first rate!

Excellent, highly recommend.

Prof. Thomson was recommended to me by a friend. I spent over 12 months dealing with continence issues (GPs are not particularly knowledgeable about the symptoms or the treatment), wondering whether my child was constipated, and trying to force large amounts of water-based laxatives down her in case she had an impaction. Prof.Thomson removed all the guesswork and just 2 months after our first appointment she is almost completely better. The service is very efficient: the wait time for an appointment was minimal, X-rays and blood tests were performed on the same day, a diagnosis given, and a treatment plan put in place (including psychological support). I highly recommend him for anyone experiencing continence issues with their children, and I am pleased to say that what has been an incredibly stressful period of life is reaching its end.

Five Star Care

My husband and I were lucky enough to get an appointment for our son with Professor Mike Thomson within a week of contacting his team. After going back and forth to the GP over the last two months with our sons stomach issues, Mike was able to assess his problems very promptly, professionally and confidently. We now feel a great sense of relief knowing we are receiving the very best care for our son. I felt the hospital and care we experienced for his first appointment at Portland Street Hospital was a real 5 star experience. Absolutely the best;) We are very happy and I would highly recommend Mike Thomson.

Best appointment ever attended.

After suffering for years and not really getting answers or way forward, I came across Professor Mike Thomson and took my son on a train to London for an appointment with him. It was amazing, he listened, didn't judge, spoke so kindly to my son and quickly arranged investigations, an action plan and referral. My son now talks about 'Arh Mike" with fondness after just one appointment. As a mum I couldn't be more thankful.
