Transformed my daughters life
I saw Prof. Thomson in December as my daughter (Isabella) kept vomiting/ regurgitating food all the time with abdominal pain. There were also times that my daughter would vomit blood. Isabella had been admitted numerous times to her local NHS Hospital, had multiple tests but no diagnosis made. It was implied that it was an eating disorder/psychological by our local team. I then in desperation took my daughter to Prof. Thomson who did tests and tried multiple medications which unfortunately did not work. Prof Thomson diagnosed her with reflux that wasn't responding to medication. He then referred her to Prof de Coppi a Paediatric surgeon who diagnosed her with a hiatus hernia. On the 1st of June he performed surgery on her and her life and our family's life has been transformed. Thank you so much Prof. Thomson for listening and referring her.
THANK YOU PROF THOMSON
My daughter has been suffering badly with her stomach since getting gastroenteritis in March leaving her in severe pain after eating, not being able to hold fluids down, bad regurgitation and nausea. Despite numerous attempts to get help from the NHS we got absolutely nowhere, She has been told by different doctors that she has IBS/ don’t know but it will go away/ anxiety/ unexplained/ possible ulcer/exaggerating her symptoms!!! One gastroenterologist said it’s phycological, and pointless doing any tests as she was 100% sure nothing would show and it would make her ‘anxiety worse’ (she’s never suffered from anxiety!!!!) and to see a hypnotherapist!
This experience was extremely difficult for all of us!
By this stage she could hardly eat/ drink because it made her symptoms so severe, so I decided to look for a private gastroenterologist.
I got highly recommended to Prof Thomson and within 15 mins he told us he thought my daughter had delayed gastric stomach emptying.
We walked out of his office and my daughter said he was the first doctor who had ever listened to her!
To a child who is suffering so badly, this makes ALL the difference!
I stupidly never had health insurance, but Prof Thomson told me what tests we needed and gave me a letter to show the NHS. Because of this I got taken seriously and my daughter got the tests, which confirmed the delayed gastric emptying that he had suspected. (No one else had ever mentioned this)
During this time he and all of his amazing team of PA’s have been absolutely amazing! Quickly answering questions and emails and giving advice!! I honestly can’t thank them enough!
Unfortunately my daughter’s issue isn’t a quick fix, but thanks to Prof Thomson at least we know what she is dealing with!
I will be forever grateful to him for listening to my daughter and for all of his help and expertise.
Don’t hesitate if you are looking for a gastroenterologist for your child, he is amazing!
Thank you SO MUCH to Prof Thomson for…
Thank you SO MUCH to Prof Thomson for the amazing support and expert medical care and attention provided to our son. Our son had been suffering for over a year with chronic constipation, soiling and stomach cramps and had been on an intensive laxative regime through the NHS which resulted in him experiencing the same symptoms but losing lots of weight. We felt so grateful to have discovered Prof Thomson who very quickly correctly diagnosed the issue and within 1-2 weeks, our son was completely transformed. We are so very grateful for his genuine care, his kind listening approach, and excellent support - he obviously genuinely cares for his patients, and our son is back to his happy and healthy best self. THANK YOU. We also felt fully supported throughout by his excellent personal PA who made booking appointments and follow ups a seamless process.

Professor Thomson
Professor Thomson!
Where do I start.
I owe everything to this man. What he has done for my son Bowen is indescribable. Unfortunately, Bowen has been let down over and over by the NHS. He suffered pyloric stenosis as a young baby, CMPA, constipation, severe reflux and as such other complications from the surgery young. All efforts to get a Gastroenterology referral were refused, so I researched to find the best in the country for children.
Professor Thomson saw us privately initially (then we moved to his Nhs list) and found no fewer than 8 things Bowen needed (investigations/ potential treatments) a member of his team operated and had a look in his stomach and managed to prove the reflux and suspected delayed stomach emptying. He was started on a medication which means my little boy can eat relatively normally and his tummy doesn’t get over full, so he vomits a lot less now. His factual and profound expertise has been so helpful, when other doctors have doubted anything has been wrong with my son.
Professor Thomson is an asset to paediatric gastroenterology, his secretary responds so quickly at Sheffield children’s hospital and I have recommended him to other families.
At our first appointment, when someone finally listened and validated all my concerns (which had previously been ignored) I cried with relief.
I honestly feel, he really cares about his patients and leaves no stone unturned. So thank you for all you do for the families and our children.
Outstanding practice
Prof Thomson is an outstanding specialist, and by running this clinic at the Portland, he makes his expertise as accessible as possible. It is very important service, especially at a time when waiting lists in many parts of the country are long.
Our daughter (3.5 years old) has a longstanding history of severe constipation, and we finally brought her to Prof Thomson in the autumn. Throughout the process, he has been systematic, commencing treatment immediately and intensifying when required, but always prudently. Our daughter has been under his care for some months, and she is now a happier little girl than she has ever been. He has also been perceptive about other aspects of her health and has made some very useful onward referrals.
Parents who need help for their child can have absolute confidence in Prof Thomson’s skill. Moreover, the team who assist him – Kate, Justine, and Stacey – are brilliantly efficient and helpful. Basically, they are all smashing, and we are so grateful to them.

Amazing experience
Amazing experience. Professor Thomson is an incredible guy. I had to go in for a procedure and both the initial consultation and the procedure were much better than I expected. He explains everything very clearly in layman's terms and takes time to make certain you are comfortable and know what to expect.
You can also tell that he is a great leader as without exception all his team were warm and kind. You could see how well they all worked together. Very professional and respectful to each other.
I could not recommend him or his team highly enough.

My daughter has been ill for about 5 years and got substantially worse after catching Covid in February 2022. Despite trying to get her help via the NHS she continues to suffer in particular with daily severe headaches/migraines, stomachache, nausea and extreme fatigue.
Meeting Professor Thomson was a truly wonderful experience. He is kind and caring whilst being extremely thorough and diligent in his assessment, taking the time to really understand what the issues are.
We now have a diagnosis, medication, a plan and most importantly hope for the future and we are eternally grateful!

Professor Thomson was wonderful
Professor Thomson was wonderful. Everything from his personable manner and hilarious cartoon socks for the children, to his kindness and ability to disseminate the issue into plain English, without being in any way condescending, was reassuring and calming. I cannot recommend Prof Thomson highly enough. If you are worried in any way about your child's tummy or digestion do pop and see him. He will be really thorough, really kind and will spend the time you need as a parent to ensure you know your child is in the best of hands.

Prof Thomson & Team
My son was diagnosed with colitis in Dec 2022.
Prof. Thomson has done few tests on my son including colonoscopy and he prescribed a set of meds.
Prof. Thomson was very supportive also for me, as child's illness impacts parents as well. Prof. Thomson explained clearly all issues related to colitis and also provided info to the useful websites to read more information about that illness.
We are still under Prof. Thomson care - he is always making sure we do the right blood tests and reviews the results carefully.
It is also worth to mention that the Medical Secretaries of Professor Thomson are very helpful too, the phones are always answered and emails replied very quickly.
Excellent Experience
Professor Thompson made us feel confident and relaxed that the procedure he was performing on our 10 year old son would be straightforward despite us being considerably worried. Post intervention our sons quality life has been transformed. We are so pleased. Thank you!
Couldnt recommend more highly
Prof Mike Thomson diagnosed my then 15 year old son with Crohns in Jan 2022. Throughout 2023 he supported us through steroid treatment and then ongoing immune suppressants. At all stages he has given us as much time as we needed, explained incredibly well options available to us and relevant details all in a calm considerate and caring manner. He has been outstanding for us and managed to control symptoms very quickly. More importantly the ongoing care is beyond exceptional and responsive - supported by his excellent assistants. You will be in safe hands with him and the team and I cant thank him more profusely.
Thank god for Professor Mike Thomson
Thank god for Professor Mike Thomson! Having got nowhere with the NHS regarding my daughters coeliac symptoms (coeliac positive blood test) she had been unwell for about 2 years and when she began feeling unwell even when being gluten free I knew we had to see someone privately. We were recommended Professor Mike Thomson and thank goodness we went! He thinks out of the box. My 12 year old is now fully well even after a few days of seeing him, as he put her on antibiotics for something (which can give a false positive for coeliac) and now her bloods, biopsy and her health is completely normal. And she can now enjoy cake etc full of gluten!! We owe everything to him. Thank you Mike!

Amazing doctor
I went to Professor Thomson after my son (17 years ) was diagnosed with crohn’s disease. He had lost weight and was not able to put on weight He was also having various symptoms related to disease . Professor Thomson was very helpful in not only getting his symptoms in control, but also to help him gain weight. He was never in hurry always allowed us to ask all the questions and answered them fully . He is an amazing doctor and I would recommend him to all.

Quite simply a brilliant expert who cares
Professor Thomson was the 4th gastroenterologist we saw concerning our daughter's chronic tummy pain that had lasted for weeks. We had been left in the lurch by the others who were at a loss as to how to treat her.
Our daughter had been off school for 2 months and the whole family were in despair.
The Prof quickly diagnosed the issue as Covid related and immediately provided us with a treatment plan to address the issue.
Within days, our daughter was showing improvement. The path to recovery was not smooth however Prof Thomson and his team were always available to offer advice and assurance.
Just having someone who cared about our ordeal made a massive difference. We can not speak too highly about the Prof and his team - especially Kate. Emails were always answered and timely advice was dispensed without fail.
Our daughter is now back to her usual lively, energetic self and we are so grateful for the help and support we got during our nightmare.
Quickly understood the issue. Properly investigated
I sought out Professor Thomson for a second opinion after making no progress with my daughter's withholding for nearly two years. He took X-rays that had never been done before and quickly made a plan for treatment - I could have cried with relief (any parent with a child who withholds can understand how incredibly stressful that is). The treatment didn't work quite as quickly and in the manner that we had anticipated but Professor Thomson helped us adjust and tweak until we got there. I do have some sympathy for the parent in one of the other reviews in that he can seem rather officious and very quick, and for a parent who is in an emotional state this can feel dismissive, but I do believe it to be just that he is officious and quick! With the help of Professor Thomson's recommended child psychologist, my daughter is now nearly fully better and we hope to be off meds before too long. It has changed our lives and saved my daughter from what was looking like being a problem that she would carry into her schooling career which could have subjected her to a lot of ridicule and misery.

Professional, good listener, proactive
I consulted Prof Thomson privately after being batted around on the NHS. He was the first doctor to take our concerns about our son’s worsening condition, seriously from the get-go. He really listened well, unlike lots of other doctors we had seen that fortnight, when my son was really ill. It was reassuring to see this professional at work. Asking all the right questions, taking decisive action and clearly explaining his thinking to us. He worked fast and his clinical experience shone through. He referred us to a colleague who was also excellent and as thorough in his investigations as Prof Thomson. A diligent and committed professional. He really cares! My son is fully recovered. Highly recommend.

Methodical and highly skilled
Prof Thomson is detailed, thorough, professional and relentless in trying to identify the right treatment for my young daughter. Most importantly he’s one of the most experienced and skilled physicians in his field - highly reassuring to know he won’t leave any stone unturned and will do it safely and methodically. I like that he thinks, speaks and acts quickly and decisively- he doesn’t need to do GI teach-ins and hand holding for parents who have spent hours with Dr Google. And maybe that’s why he can help lots of kids and start appointments on time (as he does). His medical team Kate and Justine are very responsive and helpful also to keep it a well oiled machine.
