Extremely disappointed and disheartened

I am very sad to say that after months of feeling like I have not been listened to or given the right support with nhs doctors and paeds for my 6.5mnth old, I thought by paying the high consultation fee this is the one thing I was guaranteed. I have never felt so rushed in an appointment, being cut off if I was trying to tell something or explain, he just fired questions at me and in under 5 minutes said meds to give him. I had written down all my notes to prepare for the meeting and list of questions also but felt so pressured when he was looking at his watch at ten minutes in. I felt stupid when I was trying to ask my questions for guidance and when I was questioning about introducing dairy told just wait a year, I said not anytime sooner if it’s not an allergy, he said you can do milk ladder in a month if he’s ok and told me to Google it, perhaps a minute brief explanation would not of gone a miss?
I actually haven’t left with an idea of if he thinks he has an intolerance or allergy or something else or how I can bring the sickness levels down. When I have looked up the medication prescription it is anti acid so might help with the pain but I don’t think will help with the sickness. I can contact if nothing improves over next month and I can be referred to a dietician but overall just didn’t feel helped at all.
I wasn’t told how much time I was allowed for the fee but considering first consultations are more expensive I would assume I get time to go through his history and made to feel more relaxed. I essentially dragged the appointment out to nearly 20mins long more so because I was stressing to see if I have covered all my questions but he couldn’t of looked less interested. Maybe my 5.30pm appt slot was inconvenient and he had an important dinner reservation to make, who knows, but I am writing this long review to advise anyone who has been struggling as a mother and thought travelling into london for the expensive private route will be worth it as a final attempt, please don’t. I could of waited another week and gone to someone closer for £100 cheaper but thought he would be one of the best and worth the journey. Completely lacked empathy and couldn’t wait to push me out the door when I was talking to him walking out. Oh and not to mention he said he will get someone to measure his height and weight, well that didn’t happen either! Had to also ask one of the nice ladies on the desk what I was supposed to do with the prescription as wasn’t sure if had to go to private pharmacy for that but that was obviously closed.
I was very upset last night and today just angry. I wish my partner had been allowed in so he could of fought my corner a bit more as you feel more vulnerable as the mother for being taken advantage of and fobbed off. I can see I am not the first to find that his listening skills aren’t favourable and has come across as arrogant to others.

I am so sorry that you did not have an experience that lived up to your expectations. I always listen and always take a detailed and comprehensive history in order to form a specific and correct diagnosis and treatment plan. On occasions I have to structure my questioning and be specific in the answers I need in order to make a considered judgement and this can feel like I am not listening. I am. It is simply that I know which questions give me the greatest understanding of the problem in the most efficient way. Furthermore, I ALWAYS give parents the time they need to ask all the questions they require to have answered and always ask if there is anything else that they want to have covered or have queries about, at the end of the consultation. If you have an ongoing issue then of course I would be happy to meet again, at no cost (as your child’s health is my primary concern above everything), and as a gesture of good will, whether or not you do so, I will refund your previous charge, in order that you feel that we have sorted the situation out to your satisfaction. Please do understand that the only driving force for me in this is the improvement in your child’s health. I did offer a dietitian appointment I remember which is helpful often but some parents prefer to Google the ‘milk ladder’ for dairy protein reintroduction. This was an option I gave you. I hope you will get back in touch so that we can help you and your infant which is my over-riding priority. With best wishes and thank you for your honest feedback. Maybe I had had a long day! Sorry.

Prof Thomson is such a good and nice consultant. I went to him after I was unhappy with who my son was seeing at the time and I'm so glad we found him. After months and months of not knowing what was wrong with him and literally not being able to leave the house because of his nausea/vomiting etc., I feel that he is normal again! I am very grateful for his input as it was a very difficult time for us as a family. Also, his secretary Kate has always been so pleasant and super efficient so thank you to you both!

That certainly wasn’t my recollection of the consultation but if you feel that way then I must say that that is a very unusual feeling for any of my families following my consultations. I am happy to meet again and also to refund your consultation fee in this circumstance. I would like to hear from you in more detail how you felt unsatisfied and try to make reparations. Prof Thomson has been superb in his treatment of our daughter over the last year. He was extremely helpful with her initial diagnosis and then when she developed some further issues, persevered until we had worked out what was going on. He is always available at short notice and has been very supportive and comforting to my daughter and us. We are very sorry to be moving on to an adult Gastro now she is 18. His office administration is also excellent and he has a great Practice Manager, which all helps!

Prof Thomson was a life savior for us

Prof Thomson was a life savior for us. My 9 yo daughter suffered from bad gastroesophageal reflux with almost all possible symptoms for a several months and it was only getting worse until we managed to have an online appointment with him. I found Prof Thomson looking online for alternatives to fundoplication surgery for children as I was losing hope that any medication would ever help; I contacted him personally and he replied the same day. In my country, after few insufficient and failed treatment options we were advised to stop medication, accept the suffering and maybe get psychological counseling. And be happy that she's got just reflux, no cancer or liver cirrhosis. Prof Thomson gave us an optimized treatment scheme which worked very well and in couple of months things changed completely. The child is now off medication for months, no reflux symptoms at all and happy and joyful as before. Thank you Dr Thomson and God bless you!

Professor Thomson is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
Since birth, my daughter had suffered from tummy discomfort - I knew something was off but could not figure out why.. despite numerous visits to doctors.
I eventually found prof Thomson and he was able to see me straight away. The consultation was great- he listened to me, he checked my daughter over and was able to diagnose the issue and prescribe the appropriate care. Within 2 days, my daughter's discomfort dissappeared! I am ever so grateful!!!!

Thank you!!!

Finally Some Peace Of Mind!

I can't sing his praises enough! We had battled with our youngest Daughters constipation issue for around 4 years. We had been to the GP countless times and the local Ped. GI numerous times. Each visit we were left feeling hopeless, in the dark and a few time, treated like overbearing parents or talked down to. I found Prof. Thomson after someone had mentioned going down the private route. From the first email, his PA was so helpful and lined out everything, including costs to us. For the first time ever, an Xray was arranged for our Daughter, to actually see what, if anything, was going on! The team at radiology were so calming and we had no issues with her getting to lay on the table. Straight afterwards, we had our appointment with Prof. Thomson, who honestly, is the most genuine, caring Dr I have ever come across.

He was very thorough in asking questions about our Daughters issue and above everything, he listened! His bedside manner with our Daughter was amazing, she again, felt completely comfortable with him and even had a giggle while giving her an examination. After the exam, he again went through what could be her issue and also explained her intestine had become enlarged due to being expanded for such a long time. He really put my mind to rest that nothing sinister was going on with her and ordered some blood tests to be done at our local GP surgery to get to the route issue.

Honestly, for the first time in 4 years, I felt like we got more care, compassion and answers, in just 30 minutes. He was not condescending and used terminology so I was able to understand and not feel overwhelmed. I have passed on his details to other parents who have been going through the same situation and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone. He really does care about the child and that shines through when he interacts with them. My Daughter at the end of the consultation said to her Dad, who was waiting outside due to covid, he was the best and funniest Dr ever! She couldn't wait to tell her teacher the next day how he made her stomach make funny duck noises! Don't hesitate to turn to this Dr, it's the best thing we ever did, even though we are still early days on this path, we feel so relieved and wish we had found him earlier!

Very grateful for finding Prof Thomson.

I want to start by saying thank you so much to Professor Mike Thomson for what I felt was a really productive zoom consultation. I have a 4 year old son, who since birth has been terribly uncomfortable. He struggles with a sluggish bowel, silent refulx and really struggles with anything difficult to digest, ie, fruit, meat, vegetables, bread, cereal, as well as additives and bulking agents. We've seen professionals and been in daily to weekly contact with them throughout our son's life, but no one has taken control or followed through with anything. Mainly as each person has believed it to be for different reasons as to why our son has his symptoms. Which obviously hasn't been helpful for our son. Our son is now approaching school age and we have been desperate to find someone who can actually make things happen.
I found Professor Thomson to be professional, yet very human. He has a great energy about him. He knew exactly what to ask and got through an amazing amount of questions in the time we had. These were questions that we've never had before. He had greater understanding of obviously what might be going on and even though I've searched the web for a long time for conditions, mainly to help the past professionals have an understanding, Prof Thomson knew about the physical appearances these possible conditions may have, so knew what direction to take the appointment. It was exactly how we needed it to be. He showed great sympathy for what my son has gone through and has come up with an action plan, which I know will give us answers. Having this appointment has enabled my little boy to now have answers in the near future and for us as parents to focus on him more particularly as he has autism. We no longer have to put all our energies into fighting for someone to hear how he is feeling. I'm extremely thankful for finding Professor Thomson.

Thank you, Ms Jones in Hertfordshire.

Professor Thomson saved my life

I don't even know where to start with this review, I think the title says it all.

I first saw Dr. Thomson when I was a young teenager as I had been through so many doctors who didn't know what was wrong with me, lost interest and gave up. We found Dr. Thomson online and travelled from Preston to see him via a private appointment in Sheffield. On our first appointment I knew he was going to help as he had every single one of my hospital notes on his desk and I knew he had read through them thoroughly as he had lots of questions and was showing a huge amount of interest. Once we had our first appointment, he put a plan in place and then put me on his NHS patient list.

Although I wasn't an easy and simple patient and I was labelled as a mystery by many doctors, he did not give up and was determined to help me. Dr. Thomson trialled every single test, procedure and treatment with me to get to the bottom of what was wrong. Me and my parents was really struggling with everything going on, and as per a normal human response my mum was googling my symptoms and trying to also figure out what was wrong as I was getting worse by the day, and every time my mum brought something new up with Dr. Thomson he took her seriously, and followed up with her questions and didn't dismiss anything my mum suggested.

My health was deteriorating quickly and within 2 years I had lost over 4.5 stone and he made the decision to give me an NJ feeding tube and when that was no longer working he fitted me with a permanent PEJ tube and even came to see me the next day on his day off with his lovely daughter to see how I was. Even though I didn't have a diagnosis at the time, the decision to place a PEJ tube in my body is the reason I am here writing this review today, it was my only source of nutrition and survival.

I spent a lot of my teenage years away from my family home in Preston as many nights that turned into weeks was spent on the children's ward on drips because I was just simply too weak to be out of hospital, and within every single one of these hospital visits I felt valued, I was listened to and I was taken seriously by him and his whole team which was a huge difference compared to previous doctors who just gave up on me.

After endless tests and treatments, I was officially diagnosed with severe Gastroparesis (Paralysed Stomach) and over the years I have also been diagnosed with EDS, POTS and CFS/ME. The feeding tube that Dr. Thomson placed 8 years ago is a permanent fixture, and although I would do anything to be about to live without it, I am extremely grateful of his decisions to place me with this every single day.

If my parents did not find Dr. Thomson online and we had just listened to all my previous 6 doctors, I honestly don't know what my future would have held, and it's a very scary thought. Having multiple chronic illnesses was not the life I ever thought I would live, but I truly am grateful every single day for my existence and I now spend most of my time helping other people with chronic illnesses on social media, assisting charities that help young people in hospitals and also speaking to parents who have young non-verbal children with feeding tubes and I owe all of this to Mike Thomson.

He really is a caring doctor, wants the best for his patients and will do everything in his power to help.

I know this is probably one of the longest reviews ever, but even this many words can't express my appreciation for your help.

Thank you so much for everything.
Beth Gallery - the mystery you solved.

I am so pleased I found Prof Thomson! My 8 year old daughter has been suffering from cyclical episodes of abdominal pain/headaches and vomiting for many many years and even on medication there was little to no improvement. After a consultation with Prof Thomson and a change in treatment plan, my 8 year old daughter hasn't vomited in 7 weeks! This has made such a difference in my daughters life. Thank you Prof Thomson for taking an interest in our case and taking the time to talk to my daughter and I. We are truly grateful.

Travelling over from Northern Ireland for gastro investigations

My daughter has had ongoing issues since she was a reflux baby. After the long NHS waiting times, I decided to look privately. It was great to be able to do a virtual video appointment from Northern Ireland and then travel over to London for the tests. We have been reviewed several times through video and email. Always a quick respond and reassured by Professor Thomson. I am very thankful my daughter has improved and anything sinister has been ruled out. I would recommend Professor Thomson to anyone.

We had a great consultation experience with Professor Thomson. He was very kind and professional throughout and happy to listen to all my questions regarding my 12 week old daughter. The information discussed and the plan we made during the consultation were then sent to me securely the next day and to my local GP which was extremely helpful. His practice manager Kate and medical secretary Justine were also both very friendly, helpful and patient with my many questions and emails. Arranging the appointment was incredibly straightforward and I came away feeling extremely positive.

Exemplary Gastroenterologist

Top guy! Where do I start. After 5 years of getting nowhere elsewhere, and even disbelieved, I googled exemplary gastroenterologists and up popped Prof Thomson. We were seen quite quickly for an initial consultation. After an appointment of an hour or so and listening to our son's history and examination, Prof Thomson came to a probable diagnosis. After a trial of medication this probable became a definite. Prof Thomson is a very personable man and put us at ease straight away. His magnificent PA Kate always has a swift response to any correspondence we send. We can't thank Prof Thomson enough for believing in us and helping us to help Ellis.
