I rented a Renault Clio for 5 days, picking it up from Varna Airport after dark. As a result, I was unable to check the vehicle for damage. When I returned the car to the airport (having driven it very little) 5 days later, the agent undertook the check in my absence over a prolonged period and then asked me to come and see a barely visible scratch to one of the wheel trims, for which I am very confident I was not responsible. I was then kept waiting for 30 minutes while he tried to work out how much this would cost me. I was finally charged a total of 235 euros for this tiny scratch. The rental of the vehicle by itself cost 120 euros. I was unable to argue my case, otherwise I would have missed my flight. My request for a refund from the company was met with a firm blank. I shall not be using this rental company again. I note that my issue seems to replicate that of Mr Sharp who left a similar review on 7th April. This is a company that now clearly puts profit before customer care or goodwill. I am also very suspicious now as to whether the damage was actually sustained during the period of the rental.

The car was spotlessly clean, well-maintained, and drove perfectly. It felt almost new and was very comfortable for the whole trip, exactly as described in the booking.

AVOID AVOID AVOID! We had a issue with our car not starting and they made us pay for someone to come and start it. When it started 5 hours later a surprise it wasnt working. We where blamed, and ended up leaving the car at the hotel as we had a very early flight and couldnt risk missing it! The team blamed every error on us and didnt help at ALL! I wrote to them asking for my deposit as well as expenses back, surprise no response. They then took money from my deposit, claiming they attended an accident, really??? still waiting to hear back but of course they are happy to take money! SCAM 1000000%. Will be taking legal action in Bulgaria, little do they know my son in law is Bulgarian, so we wont be scammed!

I see your reply, but it still remains that your company has lied. In the initial email when the car was recovered, your team stated the car started with no jump start..... then this morning your team stated there was a jump start??? Also, you so called technical team had NO idea what it was. Initially telling us to do something with the steering, then WE suggested maybe its the battery. When road side assistance arrived, he made it clear there was a loose connection with the battery. NO lights or electricals where left on. It was a simply case that you could have come helped us job done, but you continue to BLAME a loyal customer. a disgrace!

I have never had to fly to Varna before - but now EasyJet have pulled Gatwick BG flights I went via Wizz air (fantastic crew and new airbus jets)
Toprentacar were brilliant polite and professional - I also had my own insurance and they accepted this - they also ferry myself and others from airport to toprentacar office - 2 mins away via minibus.
The first time you register it takes longer than any return hire - but I have already been given 10% discount for all future hires and will use this company twice a year - Gatwick to Varna is a better trip than Gatwick to Sofia - Varna Airport super clean and modern and very, very quiet. My car was accepted ok on return 1600km done and deposit returned. All cars very clean IMO. New fleet stock arriving each year. Recommended for BG

Top Rent A Car at Varna Airport charged me €36 for “unwashed return” even though the car was only slightly dusty after rainy weather. They also charged €28 just because I returned the car early in the morning — no key box, no service, nothing. I even sent photos proving the mats were already dirty before pickup, but they still refused a refund. Rude, greedy, and dishonest company — never again!

1. Shuttle - first time I faced the situation that shuttle is not picking a whole family, but only the driver to make payment, pickup the car and then return back to the airport to get your family onboard. Regardless the reason ( naturally, a single shuttle couldn’t just address the amount of people required to arrive to the company location), this is unacceptable practice.
2. Check-in - due to misleading info by the Desk representative I purchased the full protection insurance even I had already 3rd party coverage for the excess amount
3. The car was NOT clean, while I was requested to wash it before returning - and again, purchased the wash-off to avoid dealing with the cleaning: nothing extraordinary, but never mentioned in the rental conditions and not communicated during the reservation process.
4. Air pressure in tires was below the required and the respective indication was seen on the dashboard, yet it is gone after filling the air.
5. Check-out was smooth - probably because it was done by a strong external agent in early morning hours at the airport and not at the company desk.
6. Bottom line - Even the price seems competitive ( not sure it is really so considering +50% for full insurance and wash), I’d prefer another company next time.

My renting experience with Toprentacar was awesome - everyone was super nice and helpful, explaining everything, the prices were great, no hard upsells on add-ons, new car and exactly the one I booked. I had to drop off the car a day earlier and a different location - Victoria at the downtown location was of extreme help accepting the car back super quickly on Saturday afternoon.
The only thing I could probably note - the wait at the pick up was a bit on the longer side but there was a whole line of customers.

Last year we rented a car from Top Rent A Car and felt they offered a friendly, good-value service. They were therefore our default rental company when we returned again this year. Sadly, our verdict is not so favourable this time.
Collecting the car from the Varna depot was simply awful. When I walked into their tiny underground office, the agent just stared at me and only when I was about to sit down did he grunt a perfunctory 'hello'. Throughout the admin, he was brusque, irritable and just appeared to be going through the motions. Then we got to the upsell. He correctly observed that I had chosen not to take their "Protection Insurance" so I confirmed that we had stand-alone insurance (incidentally, at a considerably lower cost). "Then you will have to pay for the car to be cleaned". This was news to me since there was no such stipulation last year. However, I subsequently reviewed their website and, whilst the english used is poor and confusing, he was right that we were expected to return the car in a so-called "clean to clean" condition. In other words, not in a normal used state but equivalent to the inside and outside condition the car was when we picked it up. In 30 years of hiring cars around the world, this is the first time I have encountered such a charge, which is clearly designed to put pressure on the renter to pay for an exorbitant protection policy. It actually got worse because the 16 or so euros they would charge at the point of hire would double if the car was not returned 'clean to clean'. Clearly, nothing to do with the real cost of cleaning the car and everything to do with pressuring me to buy extras I didn't want or need. I simply told him I would return the car clean which inevitably elicited a hard stare.
To illustrate how utterly unhelpful this agent was and what little concept he had of "customer service", not once did he check that I understood where to collect the car, which turned out to be some 15 mins by foot in an underground carpark. As far as he was concerned, there was a piece of paper on the desk and it was my business to familiarise myself with its contents. Too bad if I didn't understand the details.
Collection was a completely different story. The agent smiled, was polite and friendly and couldn't do enough to help us. Because the car was parked in a dingey underground carpark, it was extremely difficult to validate that all the body damage had been correctly recorded, so we had to turn on our phone torches, which is far from ideal. Whilst Top Rent A Car operate a very good system of putting stickers next to damage recorded and also have clear rules around what size of scratch counts as chargeable damage, we had no difficulty finding multiple scratches that hadn't been recorded. It seems quite wrong that Top Rent A Car would have charged me for scratches that it seemed to have no awareness of at the point of collection. At best, this demonstrates poor standards of consistency. As a result of all the checking we needed to do, it was at least 30 minutes after we had entered the underground office when we were ready to leave yet the time recorded for return was still set at the earlier time. Similarly, whilst the fuel tank was recorded as 'full' it was very clear that it was a few litres short, just like last year when it was short by almost a quarter of a tank.
The car itself was reasonably well maintained though the tyres would have probably been illegal in most western european countries. Similarly, the pressure of those tyres must have gone unchecked for a quite a while as the car complained of under-inflation after just a few days.
As expected, cleaning the car ourselves was not a problem as Bulgarians like a clean car and 24/7 self-cleaning stations are as common as corner shops, with great foam and pressure hoses ('Avtomirkas" in Bulgarian). They cost just a few leva for a wash and vacuum and are very easy to use.
The collections agent at Sofia was certainly more friendly than the one at Varna but I don't think I have ever seen a rental agent check over a car so carefully (including underneath) so felt very vindicated that we had properly surveyed the car at collection. What I didn't like, though, was him telling me to scan a QR code so I would leave feedback on the spot. Quite frankly, I had much better things to do at that point than quickly formulate feedback to meet some depot target.
All in all, Top Rent A Car went from being a brand I trusted, to one that I might consider in the future, but not one I would favour. My custom did not feel valued, my time was not respected and I was given no reason to provide repeat business.
