Buyers Beware; Epic Cycles sold me a damaged bike as new.

I collected my Cycle to Work Genesis Equilibrium from Epic Cycles in February 2014 while staying with my parents nearby. When I got it back to their house (wheels off, wrapped in sheets and towels in my boot) I found the seat tube had a shallow dent and four parallel gouges to bare metal towards the base of the seat tube. Obvious on close inspection, not from a standing position in the shop. I checked that this could not have happened in my boot (no part of the wheel could possibly come into contact with the area of frame damaged) and reported the problem to Epic.

Epic immediately disputed that they had caused the damage, offered to touch up the damage if I returned to the shop, were borderline rude and adopted a “Buyer Beware” attitude expecting me to have checked the bike thoroughly before leaving the shop. This attitude is contrary to UK consumer law and would put the customer in a worse position than when buying second hand on ebay!

I didn’t ride the bike (due to the dispute and an ongoing back problem) and after a year of trying to resolve via email threatened court action. Another Epic employee then got involved and offered, as a gesture of goodwill, a replacement frame or a professional respray by a third party they considered the best in the business.

I chose the respray and couriered the bike to them in march 2015, telling them there was no immediate urgency as I couldn’t ride due to a worsening of my back injury.

I heard nothing further until I chased them 3 months later, when I started to ride again. I was told the bike had just gone to the refinisher and would now be “escalated”.

In August, after five months chasing a date for the bike’s return, Epic and the refinisher discovered that they were unable to match the colour, and further that the refinisher only worked with carbon!

They then sent it off to their second choice refinisher.

The bike was finally returned to me at the end of October, two months later, and with none of the goodwill remaining.

Imagine my despair as I unpacked the bike only to find a second paint chip that had been poorly repaired with touch up paint on the outer edge of the right hand seatstay.

I immediately sent photos to Epic, and they described the damage as “puzzling” but imply it is acceptable damage and have been unable to say whether it was present from the factory, or whether it happened during its seven month stay in Ludlow for the respray. I discounted the possibility that I could have done myself, in 2hrs, what their top refinishers had failed to do in five months.

Epic have not responded to my latest email and I am now taking further court action to get the damage repaired properly.

As a side point, I took a new set of pedals with me to the shop, to be fitted to the bike for my fitting session. When a friend of mine prepared the bike for return to Epic he could not remove one of the pedals and found both had been overly tightened by the Epic mechanic. We had to remove the entire crankset to get the bike in a box. I included the cranks and asked Epic to remove the pedal; the bike was returned with the crank and pedal refitted and pedal just as tight (the spindle is actually cracked it’s that tight). They left the white bar tape filthy too.

Epic used to have a reasonable reputation in the roadie community so you will find people on cycling forums a few years back saying how great they were. They appear to have gone downhill fast since then and now have very poor customer service.

Think twice about using these guys and inspect your goods carefully in the shop particularly if you are just buying a kids christmas bike or a cheap (to them) cycle to work/commuter bike.

The best service I've had from any retailer anywhere

I came across Epic after Google searching retailers who offered a professional bike fitting service back in October 2014. The store is about 80 miles from where I live but the drive down was worth it. I got an expert bike fitting, superb advice and was given plenty of time. I had an idea for the model of bike I was after before travelling down and after the fitting I ordered the bike which arrived about 4 weeks later. The bike was quite high end and expensive and after the first couple of rides there were a few problems, Epic resolved all of these quickly and professionally without any hassle or cost to myself. I was so impressed that a couple of months later I ordered a second bike for winter use.

12 months later I can honestly say the advice and support from this shop is amazing. They return emails within a few hours and will take your calls and spend as much time with you as you need. I have always received rock solid advice and I have never felt taken advantage of.

The workshop support is second to none they have some incredible mechanics who will kindly offer their time to educate you in areas of basic maintenance, removing headsets etc.

I highly recommend this store as something quite special and have just ordered my third bike from them. I doubt you can get better prices, better advice and such superb ongoing support anywhere else.

Epic Journey, Epic waste of time

After browsing Epic's Epic website I called the Epic hotline to see if they had the Epic bike I so very wanted. After an Epic phone call with customer service who assured me the Epic bike I wanted was in stock in their Epic "12,500sq ft devoted entirely to road bikes" I set off on the Epic journey to the not so epic, Ludlow. Epic traffic jams ensued but it was all worth it for the Epic bike, at the Epic Price, offered on the Epic website wasn't it? I turned up at the Epic warehouse and was shown the Epic bike in question... it was stood their in all it's glory, gleaming In the Epic 12,500 sq. ft warehouse! It was Epic. I was close to thinking that this was the most Epic day of my life, "Mr Epic, I shall have this Epic bike! Please allow me to pay you an Epic sum for this Epic steed you beautiful man!"...

Here's where the story takes an Epic twist.... "I'm sorry. You can't have that bike. It's our last one"... "Oh haha, Epic joke!" ... "No sir, I'm being serious. You can't have it... it's our last one". I was in a state of shock. Had Epic cycles led me on an Epic journey only to be delivered an atomic metaphoric wedgie of Epic proportion?! "What do you mean I can't have the last one?"... "Sir, it's our last one. This means that if someone comes in after you they won't know we sell it, so you can't buy it.".... I am not sure if you have seen Rhod Gilbert's Egg and Cress Sandwich sketch, but it was exactly the same situation. Having the item in front of you and not being allowed to buy it.

ALAS! Epic cycles had one last Epic suggestion..."I've got a similar bike, in your size, at double the price"...

To draw this Epic review to an Epic conclusion... It's obvious that their 12,500 sq. ft dedicated to road bikes isn't as straightforward or as Epic as it sounds. It's more of an Epic optical illusion. A mirage in the desert if you will. The products are there but you can't buy them. It's an Epic waste of time going there!

Order online and get an Epic deal without making the Epic, pointless jouney.

On a seperate note, Ludlow has a wonderful Tesco's where you can buy an Epic selection of scotch eggs if you need to cheer yourself up after an Epic failure.

Very Dangerous Build!

I bought a Scott Addict from this store in 2014. On my first ride, after 14 miles, the handlebars became loose. On inspection one bolt was missing and the other so loose I cold turn it with my hand. Fortunately I had stopped and was just moving off again. If I had been going down hill I dread to think of the possible consequences!
This level of incompetence is disgraceful from a store whose web site claims it is " The UK's leading dedicated road bike store...."
When I notified the manager of the fault instead of being mortified at letting a bike leave his store in a dangerous condition he brushed of my concerns with "sorry? and sent me a bolt in the post.
I asked for the store to pay to have the bike checked at a local store as Epic is 55 miles from where I live and he refused.
In one email response he said "well you checked the bike yourself?"
I am not a cycle mechanic and I didn't pay £2000 to be told it's my own fault.
Very unhappy with Epic Cycles.
You had numerous opportunities to demonstrate good customer service after I contacted you and you failed on every occasion.

Wish they were my local bike shop!

Ordered a custom build I saw on their website, which was exactly what I was after and had been unable to find elsewhere off the peg and within budget. They offered a free fit, but I was unable to make it down so tried the frame size elsewhere and adjusted when it arrived. Communication was excellent, the staff were friendly throughout and they really conveyed their passion for cycling. The bike is perfect and I would definitely recommend Epic to anyone, just wish they were closer.

Great service and competitive prices

I recently bought a bike through C2W scheme via Epic Cycles. They were extremely helpful and patient with me choosing the right bike for me. I must also say that the prices that they were asking were about 10% lower than say Evans Cycles at the time, across pretty much every bike that I was potentially interested. Also, the guys offer you to switch for much better wheels (at very little cost) and I found this option very helpful.

I ordered the bike from them without seeing the bike physically (as they are located quite a bit away from London). However, the bike arrived fully serviced, without a single scratch and pretty much ready to ride out-of-the box.

All in all, Epic cycles have one extremely happy customer. I will definitely buy some more stuff from you guys.

Special thanks to Ben Williams for extraordinary service and patience.

Bike Fit and Test Ride

Overall a very good experience. I managed to get a booking within a week for a bike fit and test ride. Bike was set up and ready for 10am when I arrived (had to be changed due to me getting my height wrong). Mark was excellent, he talked me through the fit process and gave lots of useful tips. Fit took just over an hour and then I test rode the bike on a nice short route that let me get a feel for the frame. Got back and the second bike was set up and ready to go. No pressure just lots of useful advice, ended up buying the cheaper of the two framesets thanks to my test ride and Mark's advice. Looking forward to its delivery in the new year.
All in all I would recommend Epic to anyone getting a new bike - lots of experience and very helpful staff.
Thanks again!

A less than "epic" Epic experience

I would seriously recommend that you avoid these chaps unless you are up for some Epic disappointment!!

Booked a geometry fit and test ride with "C" and booked 3 nights in Ludlow ( worth a visit) to savour the experience. Pitched up the day before the geo-fit to have a look round and guess what......no booking....and no test ride..."C" had not processed my booking and denied all knowledge of any of the 2 telephone conversations we had had!! Not impressed to say the least.

"B" came to the rescue and was helpful, talking me through what the test ride bikes would have been like had they had them! Thanks "B".

"B"suggested I re-book the geo-fit and the test rides, and to put a deposit down on my dream machine so it could be brought in for me to see before I parted with my hard earned cash. "B" assured me that if I was not satisfied with the test ride my deposit would be returned in full. With apparently nothing to lose I parted with a £450 deposit. Back on track I thought, maybe not a totally wasted trip to Ludlow!

Then with work commitments it was clear I could not make the dates we had agreed. So I contacted "B", explained that circumstances had changed and that I could not get to Ludlow for this second appointment. I asked him to cancel my geo-fit and test rides and my dream machine. All was going well and then "B" dropped the bombshell that the Epic coffers would keep £40 of my deposit as an admin charge!! Searched their website to check for T&Cs, checked the order form ...found nothing. Protested ...nothing.

Now disappointed to epic proportions and £40 down on top of a wasted trip to Ludlow.....all of which is my fault apparently!

Awful Experience

Awful place. New back to cycling at the start of 2013 and bought a Scott Foil 40 in size 54 from here, and had what I thought was a bike fit on picking up the bike. 6 Months later I got a coach and had a fit with him and he had to move the saddle so far forward it was on the max on the rails, so I then investigated why my seat post was a lay back and after contacting Scott they conformed all 54 frames and below should come with an inline post. I raised this with Chris Lines at Epic and he claimed the bike arrived with the lay back post from Scott, so re contacted Scott and they said no...all 54 frames and below are supplied with an inline post. I also contacted 2 other Scott dealers who confirmed what Scott had said. I then went back to Epic for them to resolve with an inline post and they said that Scott were basically lying, and to quote 'supply us with the same frames with lots of different size components all the time, some turn up with a 90 or 120 stem or 170 or 172 cranks on the same size frame'. Scott offered a goodwill gesture and sent a very tatty and used inline post, however, it is not Scott's issue it is with the shop Epic Cycles. Chris at Epic Cycles has refused to take accountability for the error and has refused to offer a resolution from the shop, so now I am stuck with an immaculate bike with a tatty seat post supplied from Scott. Cheekily he did offer to sell me a new in line seat post for 180 pounds, which is in effect him selling me what I am entitled to for free. is it legal for a bike shop to replace a component on a bike that has been sold without the customer's consent? Irrespective of who is to blame for the wrong seat post, it is the wrong seat post for that frame size on a bike bought from new which only came to light after a genuine bike fit and then my own investigation. Avoid this shop like the plague and don't trust them. Fully check the specification of any product you have bought from them, and if god forbid you are buying anything from them, make sure it is fully correct and to specification as if not, it appears they couldn't care less post sale.

Brilliant Service!

I was looking to buy a new road bike, and stumbled across the Epic Cycles web site by accident during my research, and they had the bike I wanted at a very good price so I thought I'd give them a go. My email request was answered quickly and after a quick phone call I made an appointment to go over for a bike fitting which was free if purchasing a bike from them. So, over I went, and after a few hours of setting up, swapping stem lengths ( at no extra charge ) and swapping the saddle for a womens specific one, where I only had to pay the price difference between the current saddle and my new one, I went for a quick road test and left as a very happy customer with a nicely set up shiny new bike. I would definitely buy again from Epic Cycles!
