One in a million
We can't recommend Prof Mike Thomson highly enough. He immediately diagnosed my 3 year old daughter with a rare metabolic condition having carried out a Gastroscopy. Having battled for 3 years seeking a diagnosis with numerous other doctors and consultants this was a huge relief. As a result of his diagnosis our daughter is now receiving the appropriate medication and is now thriving. He is extremely professional and personable, we instantly warmed to Mike and trusted him straight away. Thank you, you are one in a million.

Efficient, thorough and straightforward to deal with. After six years and numerous doctors, Prof Thomson has been able to give us a diagnosis and recommend treatment for our teenage daughter. Would recommend without reservation.

OPD clinic with Prof Thomson
We came to see prof Thomson all the way from Slovakia. Our daughter had issues with tummy ache and nausea.
It was the best experience ever at a doctors clinic from start to the end.
Prof Thomson is a lovely person who made us to feel very welcome. We could feel a high level of professionalism during the consultation. He listened carefully to our concerns and made a very clear plan to move forward. As parents we were absolutely delighted. Finally our little one symptoms settled down and we are very pleased. We are very grateful for Prof Thomson and we wish all the best. Many thanks.

Professor Thomson changed our lives!
When we came to see Professor Thomson we were desperate! We had being taking our 5 year old son intermittently to the NHS since he was 2.5 years old as he suffered badly from constipation. They had prescribed a number of treatment options including drugs, seeing a dietitian etc.. all of which had not worked. My husband and I were arguing all the time as he had begun to think that my sons problems were behavioral rather than medical.
Seeing Professor was amazing, his years of experience in the field made him able to diagnose the problem quickly and identify a treatment plan. Since being on the new treatment plan we have seen an amazing improvement in our son’s condition and I can't stress the difference that has made to all of our lives!
Professor Thomson was kind, friendly and always made sure that I had all my questions answered. I took comfort in the fact he made it clear that I could contact him at any time in between appointments if I had any further questions or experienced any problems. I would highly recommend Professor Thomson.
Thank you for helping our son
We would like to thank Professor Thomson for helping our six year old son. He carried out some test under general anaesthetic to get a complete picture of the situation and although we initially were not convinced and worried about the safety of our son, we followed his advice. The tests were completed last week and we can wholeheartedly recommend Professor Thomson as a top professional in his field and a kind, caring person. Joanna and Joseph
Dr Thompson dealt with my sons reflux…
Dr Thompson dealt with my sons reflux and also quickly diagnosed a milk intolerance, we had 3 appointments with him and he was great every time, understanding our concerns and doing his best to solve them and put us at ease.
Very professional and would happily recommend him to anyone
Highly recommend this expert
I took my daughter to see specialists about her tummy problems when she was a baby and then again as toddler. No one diagnosed a problem. Fast forward 11 years later and my daughters symptoms continued so I took her to see Professor Thompson. It took him 5 minutes to diagnose her but blood tests also confirmed. How grateful are we to have found Professor Thompson - his expert advice has saved my daughters long term health.

Worst Experience Ever
My experience with Dr Thomson was appalling. He came across rude and arrogant towards me and my daughter. Furthmermore, he did not let us have a word in edgeways for me or my daughter to speak about anything. Although, he is very thorough with his medical knowledge, he lacks in people skills.
His secretary came across very rude and arguementative towards me whilst on the phone. I had high expectations for Professor Mike Thomson as he is one of the best out there but I was disheartened by the care we recieved. We are now no longer seeing Prof Thomson and are now waiting to see another consultant and my daughter is not any better, she is a lot worse.

The Best Paeditrician You Will Ever Meet!!
My husband and I recently took our 18 month old daughter to see Professor Thompson, as she had been suffering severe gastric issues for the past 5 months. It was heartbreaking to see our precious baby in so much pain whenever she needed to go to the toilet.
After seeing numerous different GPs, and trying several different types of medication and diet changes, none of which seemed to help her in the slightest, we made the decision to take our daughter to see a private Gastroenterologist for children; something which we have since realised is very difficult to find.
After much research, we happened upon Professor Thompson's profile, and were instantly transfixed. For not only does he have a impressive plethora of qualifications, he also has an impressive amount of experience in diagnosing different gastric issues.
We instantly made the decision to go ahead with Professor Thompson, and rang his lovely Secretary to arrange an appointment to see him in the Portland Hospital, despite the fact that we live in Manchester.
On the day of the appointment, we made the journey down to London with our daughter and our newborn baby.
Our initial impression of Professor Thompson was that he is a very likeable, friendly, and professional clinician, with a lovely bedside manner towards children; our daughter instantly took to him, as did we.
Professor Thompson carried out a thorough check of our daughter and asked us a lot of relevant questions about her symptoms, etc. Sraight away, he was able to give us his diagnosis, followed by his advice on how to best manage and treat our daughter's symptoms.
We took Professor Thompson's advice on board, and can now happily report that we finally have our happy and healthy baby back, who is in pain no more.
My husband and I cannot express our gratitude to Professor Thompson enough. He has not only cured our daughter, but has also reinstated our faith back into the health profession.
We cannot commend him enough, and would urge all parents who have any worries about their childs health to contact Professor Thompson.
Thank you once again for all your help doctor.
Kindest regards,
Shazia and Parents
I would like to apologise for my …
I would like to apologise for my initial review of Professor Mike Thompson as my situation is in no way any fault of the Professors . Professor Thompson gave a second opinion and also advised my son's docters on what path he would take if he was caring for my son . My first review of the professor should have been directed at my son's docter and not the professor he provided me with a second opinion and I'm grateful for his good advice and grateful he took the time to see my son . I would also like to sincerely apologise for my first review of the professor as it was uncalled for and he did not deserve a bad rateing I hope he accepts my apology and knows it was all due to my frustration with my son's current care providers . I have since deleted my first review.
Dear Isaac's debilitating medical issue magnificently resolved.
My wife and I have had long-term bowel issues with our six-year-old grandson for whom we care. Nothing before seeing Professor Thomson has been particularly substantive or encouraging and has not formed any conclusions or solutions. I, therefore, conducted lengthy research online and found Professor Thomson who saw Isaac very quickly and instilled a sense of confidence and understanding which we appreciated as he arranged a number of tests and investigations. Some weeks later Isaac had a couple of major explorations under general anaesthetic and the Professor within days was able to reassure us all was well and prescribed medication to address the issue. Isaac has been entirely well since. I cannot speak highly enough of the kind, caring and inspiring man for all he has done for Isaac in particular and us all as a family by his inspired resolution.
Mike, Thank you so very much, you are a wonderful man.
God bless you,
The Reverend John E Marsburg
We had been seeing another doctor at …
We had been seeing another doctor at the Portland but it had gotten to the stage where I was pulling my hair out with frustration and lack of any progress.
Professor Thomson was recommended by several friends and colleagues. On the first appointment he diagnosed my sons problems as severe constipation due to a diary intolerance and sent him for an abdominal X-ray which proved his diagnosis. You cannot imagine how many ENT, Allergy tests and Blood test we had put our child through and no one ever told me that taking milk protein out of his diet would have had such an impact. We were put on an immediate course of mediation and support for our son. To begin with, I found Prof Thomson's manner a little abrupt and very matter of fact but I cannot question his knowledge and approach.
It has been a real turning point for us and our sons recovery and cannot thank my lucky stars to have taken the advice to see him. Who knows where we would be today without it! Prof Thomson is very practical and considerate health professional. He trust the parents to take the lead and supports them through the process of recovery. His staff are a pleasure to deal with and extremely helpful.
Really caring & kind, would highly recommend Prof Thomson
After struggling with my with my baby for 2 months and countless visits to my GP i was ready to give up. My baby refused to eat from around the age of 8 weeks and was taking just enough to sustain himself, sleepless nights constant worry and a baby that was suffering, the stress was too much for me i was ready to give up. This was all till i saw Prof Thomson, who came highly recommended. Besides for his friendly and extremely caring personalty he diagnosed my baby with in minutes, i was amazed at his expertise and how quickly he knew what was wrong with him.
It took 2 weeks till i saw a complete turn around and then it was as if i had a different baby, now i cant even get the bottle to him quick enough thats how eager my baby is to eat!
Thank you Prof Thomson for saving my sanity and helping my son
Simply The Best!
My youngest daughter fell extremely sick with 'gastric issues' at 5 weeks of age. We were living abroad and saw a multitude of Dr's and Gastroenterologists but no one could ascertain or diagnose what was wrong and she was not 'stable' to travel. The uncertainty was horrific and the number of tests seemed endless. Over a period of 5 months she did improve but we still were never given a diagnosis. We were not given an explanation as to what had happened and more so, what and if there was still something wrong. Her illness was 'dismissed' so often by too many people - 'I'm sure it's just one of those childhood things that hopefully she will grow out of' or 'it may just be one of those childhood mystery's but she seems to be improving well now'. For me, I was not happy and refused to 'accept' that there was no explanation and besides I also needed assurance that hopefully this would never happen again. I found all my assurances and answers (and more) with Prof. Thomson. At the earliest opportunity I flew to the UK and was recommended to see Prof Thomson who kindly made enormous effort to see us almost immediately. He was incredible from the get go. Attentive, kind, SO knowledgeable, honest and more than anything immediately gave me confidence that we would get to the bottom of what had happened and how she could now thrive and that this episode would be a thing of the past!!! Although unable to confirm (as he had not been there or witnessed it), he did come with what he 'felt' may have happened and this seemed the most plausible explanation as it answered all the questions we had and it showed that he had indeed listened to every tiny bit of what we had experienced. He had not dismissed anything.
However, more was then that he was able to diagnose the here and now - she was not totally OK and therefore, we set into motion the path to full recovery!!! All the tests were done immediately and I literally received all results and a full clinical and medical report in 24 hours! The treatment suggested was started the same day and within 10 days, my young daughter was a different child and has since gone from strength to strength and never looked back.
In addition, whilst trying to obtain clarity on the 'gastric' issues she had faced, Prof Thomson requested to look at my other daughter (aged 3 years at the time) and when he found that although not to the same extent but that there were some familiarities he also attended to her needs. I therefore, had in 2014 both of my children under his care. I have since returned to Prof Thomson with follow up appointments in 2015 and this included an Endoscopy procedure to rule out Coeliac Disease (which I may add both he and the Portland Hospital were amazing) and again in 2016 simply as a 'check-up'. This year there was no need to visit as both my children now thrive and we have NO evidence of any gastric issues but I did however, contact Prof Thomson because so much has been his professionalism and kindness that I go to him FIRST with any of my medical concerns (not just gastric issues) for his medical and professional advice. I will always been eternally grateful to Prof. Thomson because quite simply I do credit him alone in entirety for 'fixing' my daughter! Thank you

After agonising 5 months with the NHS I finally found the right support from Prof Thomson - the first one to not define me as a crazy parent for thinking that my son was ill. He indeed was dealing with CMPA and Prof Thomson gave us the right treatment and allowed my son to be happy and content again.
Thank you for seeing us so quickly and for all the support.

Excellent and very helpful
We rated Prof Mike Thomson with 5 stars as he saw our daughter very quickly after contacting him and put us straight onto a dietitian also. After a long wait and an even longer wait ahead on the NHS for a diagnosis our daughter was very unwell and showed poor growth so we contacted Prof Mike Thomson's secretary who was very helpful. It has been only a few months after our initial appointment yet we have seen so much improvement and some growth already. Thank you for all of your help and we will continue to bring our daughter to you in the future.
Excellent !
I took my son to see Prof Thomson after several years of having to deal with gastro issues, poor growth, picky eating and the frustration of having to deal with our underfunded NHS. Prof Thomson listened to all of our concerns and dealt with the clinical findings in a methodical way, eliminating all possible causes. He carried out a thorough investigation
and made sure all avenues were explored. However, he only carried out invasive procedures if he felt that they were absolutely necessary and in the best interests of my son. I felt that I could hand over these issues to him and take a back seat instead of constantly having to push for answers.
I also have to add that his practice team, Kate and Michelle, were always very helpful and answered any queries I had in a timely manner. Finally, thank you Prof Thomson for helping my son and saving my sanity.
Poor
Like any other parent would, I did a lot of research before I chose to book an appointment with Prof Thomson. I am disappointed that it was not the best decision. I am unsure why he has been rated 5 stars on here. It leaves me with the question of how credible reviews on trustpilot actually are?
Prof Mike Thomson is a well learnt professional. However, I doubt if he has any clinical aptitude. On our first appointment - he came across as "Mr- know it all". He showed poor listening skills- and did not listen to all our concerns. The appointment was half an hour long, of which he talked more about tests with some diseases/conditions/topics (medical jargon). It almost felt like i had gone back to medical school, and i was attending a lecture. He did not take enough time to hear us or probe/ask relevant questions regarding the child to prescribe investigations or arrive at a diagnosis. A pediatrician in my opnion, before specialising in GI issues or emdoscopy should learn to listen to parents who hold vital information that will aid in diagnosing the condition.
He was straight talking about endoscopy!!!! And referred us for all possible tests he could (without any relevant evidence to support their requirement). It came across to me as though the test for Giardiasis is one of his most favourite! Giardia is soo rare in the UK and our child had zero symptoms of giardia what-so-ever! We are also asked to get X-rays, all sort of blood tests and some other tests. We were billed in excess of £3500- all for absolutely no reason. However, we went ahead and did all the tests to only get all results negative. How would we get anything positive? Because, all those tests he did was based on no clinical findings. It was a simple act of ticking boxes for him. Our chief complaint/reason for visit was hardly ever heard. Inspite of the tests being negative, we were told to book an appointment to go and meet him. The appointment lasted for "8 minutes" (most of which was hi, how are you, thank you for coming bla bla) called as "report discussion". He dismissed our child, with our original problem for which we actually visited not addressed or resolved.
Being a health professional myself (no private practice), I understand how a knowledgable and experienced clinician works and comes across. Prof Thomson is far from that. Sorry, this to me was just a money making business.

First Class Paediatric Care
My 9-year-old son had been suffering with gastro problems for several months, which baffled our GP, but Prof. Mike Thomson quickly and correctly diagnosed my son's problem and prescribed treatment that resolved his issues. It turned out I had the same problem too so he effectively cured us both!
Enormous thanks to Prof Thomson for his time and care!
